Drinking alcohol excessively in Italy is considered antisocial. Italy is one of the largest wine producers, but we have a kind of philosophy: if we drink wine, we accompany it with food which helps and slows down its absorption. Being intoxicated is considered antisocial behaviour. When you order alcohol in a bar, it usually comes with a small plate of bread, cold cuts and cheeses without any added cost. We tend to drink in company. This doesn't mean that we don't have inveterate drunkards, but being drunk carries severe penalties such as loss of driving license and, if discovered, loss of job. Not to mention distancing from colleagues and friends. Wine should be enjoyed in the company and must have certain qualities...otherwise, there are hundreds of soft drinks or drinks with very low alcohol content.

There is a monumental difference between “consumption” and “distribution”. Is this a statistical average of the amount of alcohol imbibed by the indigenous population of a country, or a statistical average of the amount of alcohol purchased? And over what period of time?

I expected it to be lower. Where I live I grew up surrounded by non-drinking family and friends. I still don't drink and that's not that unusual in Tennessee. We just began selling wine in grocery stores a few years ago. I would imagine it's relatively rare in Utah. This country doesn't have a great drinking culture like Europe.

Russians make their own beverage so despite moscow and some bigger cities everyone else makes their booze. And as for Latvians i dont really drink but my friend drinks at least 0.5 l vodka every day.
