Where Do The New London Underground Trains Come From? | Huge Moves | Spark

In London we follow the unenviable task of moving £20 million worth of brand new Tube trains 200 miles across the UK’s treacherous roads onto London Underground’s Waterloo & City Line. Once the trains reach the city, he has to thread each of the twenty carriages down a narrow hole.
In Manitoba, Canada, we chart the emotional journey of husband and wife wreck chasers Pat Madden and Annette Spaulding as they attempt to lift a long lost aircraft off the bottom of a lake. Can the team haul the aircraft out of the water before winter strikes?

The Waterloo & City Line, aka "The Drain", was built by the Waterloo & City Railway and operated for most of it's existence by the London & South Western Railway and it's descendant companies, Southern Railway & BR until 1994 when it was handed over to London Underground. Also, to get the rollingstock in and out of the tunnels, a lift was provided at Waterloo that allowed vehicles to run off the main line and be lowered down into the tunnels. This was removed & the shaft buried as part of the rebuilding of the West side of Waterloo when the temporary Channel Tunnel platforms were built at about the same time as the line was passed over to LUL.

i think the issue of the correct order could have been easily solved by simply writing down on a piece of paper what order they go in according to carriage number and print out numbers 1 to 20 and give to the lorry drivers so the co-ordinator simply would have to say: "ok, lorry number 12 now it's your turn"...

@offrails
@offrails 3 жыл бұрын
I agree on the over-dramatization. Crane operators likely have safety contingencies in place for wind, etc. and lifting refurbished tube stock into and out of a hole is probably just another day on the job. Same goes for diving - as long as they dive to the tables/computer and take a safety stop or two on ascent as needed, the risk of getting bent is relatively low.
@patrickbrookings
@patrickbrookings 3 жыл бұрын
I know this is off topic, but it does prove my point. Just compare the 'Kitchen Nightmare' series from Gordon Ramsay, the UK series and the US series. Drama all around in the US series, while the UK series is much more normal and down to the ground.
@MayimHastings

I agree with you when it comes to cable tv shows (which this smacks of). It’s all meant for the older generation, whereas Millennials are way to cynical for this 😂. There are a lot of great American docu’s too, though, just not on tv. That’s why I love CuriosityStream, there’s zero drama. German docu’s are probably the best, though, and British next. Anyway, sorry for the rant 😊

As a note for those wondering why it’s suddenly become a problem on the W&C, the cars (yes on the underground they’re cars) they used to be put in and taken out using a lift that was removed to make way for the Eurostar platforms at Waterloo

Ah! But The Drain, despite being underground, was not part of the Underground until fairly late in it's existence so under LSWR/SR/BR custodianship they were coaches. And in the '80s I worked on the 1940 stock at Eastleigh Works when they came in for overhaul.

@@timothybarney7257 there is a depot at Waterloo, with a lifting system for removal of bogies, maintenance pits, cranes etc. Tyre turning is done by removing the bogies and exchanging the wheel sets (turning is normally done at Ruislip) there is a programme to take advantage of the current shutdown to turn the tyres on the entire fleet)
@sapper82

@@timothybarney7257 The W&C does have maintenance facilities, but for a full refurbishment the vehicles do need to go to a main works. The "running sheds" have neither the equipment or the space to do such work. What the video totally misses out is that the removal of the vehicles was by the same process in reverse, i.e. a bloody big skyhook to lift them out and onto road transporters.

@@timothybarney7257 the repair depot is just meters from the crane’s access point, anything major that the depot isn’t able to handle requires a crane and that’s really only for a major issue: fire, collision, retirement etc.

They came out the same way - so they knew where to place the crane. Also the cars had to be delivered the correct way round - no room to swap them end for end. The original Waterloo & City line trains were taken in and out via a single car train lift but that is now beneath the Waterloo International terminal. I think a steam engine may have fallen down this shaft while moving cars in the past.

It seems odd to me that the ‘hole’ wasn’t constructed with some sort of lift built in place to enable trains/ parts/ construction materials to be brought in without the need for quite so much temporary infrastructure. I get that retrofitting it now might be seen as too costly, it just seems odd it wasn’t designed in when the thing was built

@@johnd6487 Looking at Wikipedia, it appears that the line was built with such a lift at a different location - indeed, it's hard to see how the rolling stock of the time could have been put into place otherwise (unless it was built in situ). Programmes like this make me really annoyed. They are trying to create problems and difficulties that don’t really exist or ones that have already been though through and previously solved.

It's a carriage not a car! Clearly this was intended for North America one of the few countries that call railway carriages cars. Other countries call them carriages or coaches.

@@matthewwilliams4569 No, on the underground the individual vehicles are referred to as cars. This is generally thought to be because of the influence of Charles Yerkes, an American financier of the system.

I would have expected London’s underground to have at least one spur leading above ground to some regular railroad tracks so they wouldn’t need a crane at all. This actually seems bizarre to me they would choose this method.

They do have some lines that connect to the over ground network. But the Waterloo and City Line have no such connection and there is simply no space to put one in. It would be physically impossible to do so. And given how little it would be used it would have no economic benefit to use up part of an already overcrowded City area for something that is used only rarely.
