Another benefit to plants that I noticed is that they make you lose weight faster than other foods. I started my weight loss journey with 1500 calories of all foods including meat, dairy and junk. I lost weight as long as I stuck to my calorie intake. But then I made the switch to plant based whole foods and I'm losing weight faster even though it's still 1500 calories. I have to eat more so I don't lose it too fast. How awesome is that!

Listening and watching while drinking my smoothie of oat milk, bananas, hemp seeds, oats, and berries. Been plant based for about five years. Recently had lab work done and have found that my red blood count and white blood count and protein are below from where they are supposed to be. I usually add spinach or kale to my smoothies, but ran out. Would like to find out which foods I would need to increase to the increase the blood counts. I do have a hiatal hernia that prevents me from being able to eat much, so my meals are small. Having to survive on several small meals throughout the day.

+Amanda Stanley Maybe try a broccoli soup, broccoli has 40% protein. Sometimes I'll sit down with a bag of mild spinach and eat it like a bag of crisps. Spinach has so much protein. You can get your needed protein out of the way and then eat regularly for the rest of the day. Pea Protein powder is very good, compared to regular protein powders. I'm not vegan, but vegetarian. I don't ever bother thinking proteins or calories. Just eating stuff so I have enough energy AND enjoy chewing that food. I mean, there is so much "I have to do so" thinking. Struggling is not the way to go when it comes to your diet. It may take years before one can find the right meals that he both likes and gets the right amount of energy for the day.

While I still thoroughly enjoy making and eating vegan food, I put more emphasis on living a healthy life and have more of a balance. I've been a great cook and I actually found that since going vegan I have become 10x more creative in the kitchen. It took me solid 4 -6 months for my body to understand what was going on. Cows digest differently, not a good example. Anyway, proteins are not a problem, fats are, although the other way around. Vegetable fats are mostly unsaturated and our body can process those, animal/ saturated fats are stored as such and one needs a lot of activity to work them off.

I'd just like to ask what was your source of info that told you broccoli, spinach and asparagus were between 40-50% protein? To me that seems way too much...
@DwarfCake8 жыл бұрын
+Ciara Delaney I have just read another comment which answered the question with this: By weight it's not 50% protein but by calories it is. Protein = 4 calories per gram, Carbs = 4 calories per gram, fat = 9 cal per gram. 23 calories in 100g of spinach. 2.9g protein x 4 = 11.6 calories just coming from protein. Which is like 50% of the total calories coming from protein. So it has a high proportion of protein but it's kind of meaningless considering how little calories is in spinach to begin with in comparison to all the calories you eat in a day.
@CiaraDelaney8 жыл бұрын

1) Big strong animals that get their protein from grass and other plants, also have a digestive system that vastly differs from humans. For example cows have four stomachs and regurgitate/re-ingest their food multiple times and this is why they can metabolize many more types and parts of plants than humans. Case in point cellulose (grass, leaves, roots, stems and peel) is indigestible 'fibre' to humans while animals can metabolize it into energy. We humans only have one stomach and a one-track digestion process so the range of plants we can metabolize (raw) into nutrition is limited to readily available carbohydrates and sugars. For example a human stomach can only handle eating a peeled banana while a gorilla can eat it unpeeled. With the invention of cooking, we humans have expanded our range of nutrition sources among plants by converting what would otherwise be inedible raw, such as potatoes, wheat, rice etc. into edible and digestible food. 2) While cooked grains, legumes, tubers etc. are a good source of carbs and proteins, most of the readily available amino acids and vitamins in fruits and greens are destroyed by the cooking process, so it's best to eat edible plants raw and let the enzymes in your saliva/stomach acids break it down into amino acids that the body can metabolize as protein and vitamins. If you want to get proteins and vitamins from spinach or tomato, eat it raw, don't cook it.

I'm 100% with you on the message that you can get your protein reqs from plant sources, but the protein percentages you mentioned were all way off. I don't know whether you might be getting mixed up between the percentage of protein towards the RDA of a suggested serving, and the protein percentage of the food itself. For instance Watermelon, which would provide 3% protein (not 7%) from a serving of 280g as suggested by the Nutritional Labeling and Education Act, is not 3% protein, it's actually 0.007%. Brown rice is 2.3%, not 8%. Brocolli is 2.8%, not 40%. Spinach is 3%, not 50%. In fact, even if you are mixing up RDA amounts and protein percentages, it's still off by a massive margin. Now, I'm not saying you cant get your protein reqs from plant sources, but I think it's important to be honest and truthful here. If you eat plenty of beans, nuts, leafy greens and protein-rich grains, it's hard to be protein deficient. But a big part of this is re-educating people about their diets. Lets encourage plant based diets, but lets also encourage proper education about the nutrition of our food and not skew the facts. The last thing we want is a bunch of protein deficient vegans proving the common dogma about protein because they falsely believe that they don't need to be conscious about the protein content of their food. Peace&Love.
@18andlife6667 жыл бұрын
Excellent remark. Indeed those number are wrong and very misleading. When an educated meat-eater watches this, they go "here they go again... those vegans saying lies to confuse people" Guys you should check your facts cause when you say wrong data like this. you lose credibility and you destroy the credibility of all vegans. You are public figures and have the duty to represent vegans worldwide. be informed and on point! Don't mislead.

+SuperMe We get our B12 from nutritional yeast.
@patrickbourne38198 жыл бұрын
+SuperMe If your vegan and don't take supplements for it then you have a 98% chance of being deficient in B12 but it can take decades on a vegan diet before you actually become deficient as the body generates a little bit of its own and you can get it from things like marmite, nutritional yeast and some kinds of rice milk also have it. But its not a bad idea to take B12 even if you are not vegan as nearly 40% of Americans are B12 deficient.

@conniesrawsomekitchen8 жыл бұрын
+SuperMe Many people believe that B12 only comes from animal flesh and animal secretions (i.e. cow’s milk, chicken eggs…) when in fact it is solely bacteria-based. Fungi, animals and plants are incapable of producing B12 on their own and must obtain it from outside sources. B12 is synthesized by bacteria and is therefore found in areas of bacterial growth, namely dirt and soil. Humans have been getting their B12 from the dirt for hundreds of thousands of years by eating plants that still had bits of soil on them. Today however, we wash our fruits and veggies so well (and understandably so) that we no longer consume dirt or proper levels of B12. That’s where supplements come in. B12 is easily produced through bacterial fermentation and can be safely made into a daily supplement. Today animals don't eat grass from the soil, they eat GMO corn and soy....so even meat eaters are deficient...everyone should take a b12.

I completely agree with everything here, but I think it is important to be careful with percentage protein; spinach for example may have high percentages of protein in RELATION to its calories, but in terms of actual percentage of the mass (which will mostly be water) you consume, it is more like 3-4%. It is still easy to get the recommended protein though with a vegan diet, just by eating nuts, cereals, legumes and a variety of leafy greens/fruit and veg.
@jakeandconormusic36968 жыл бұрын
+JakeAndConorMusic Just to clarify though, most beans, cereals, nuts and seeds do contain around 10-30% protein by mass, which is equivalent to levels in meat.

+Jamie Lennon Yass, beans and lentils ftw ! it is a bit harder to get higher amounts of protein without animal products though, but if some bodybuilders can do it I think I'll be alright ;)

+Louellay You can increase your fat intake, maybe once or twice a week make porridge with a tin of coconut milk, it's so luxurious and fat tastic, it will give you enough calories to keep your body going til lunch, with change left over to help your body gain what it needs.

Then just eat more protein?

I had a friend who was hospitalized because she was eating a plant based diet and lost weight as a result of not getting enough protein and carbohydrates. She was eating three full meals a day plus snacks and was feeling full because of all the fiber but apparently not getting enough! She was 15 at the time though, perhaps your needs are different even when you're a teenager and still growing? Not sure, what are your thoughts? Interesting video though!

not enough info to assess, as mentioned countless time not enough protein is hypothetical, however not enough carbs can def be a problem for new vegans, esp those who go raw or abstain from grains, then you need a well planned diet ... how many calories a day did she get?
@liviwiles49499 жыл бұрын
I don't think she counted calories..she has anxiety so she thought it would be an unhealthy mindset for her personally. But because she was eating a whole bowl of veggies as a meal with some lentils thrown in it may have been lower in calories? She also ate quite a few salads in that time as well.
@samhorsmanboutalbi9 жыл бұрын
+Livi Wiles veggies and salads are great for minerals and vitamins but don't provide enough calories... grain based products or high calorie fruits are needed to have enough energy ... and if she has anxiety to that extent she may want to tackle that first or at the very least simultanously with diet change as it adversely impacts one's judgement ... an open minded GP would be able to help her
@liviwiles49499 жыл бұрын
+Sam Horsman Hmm, I guess it's about a balance of things..after all you can't live on salad! She has been seeing a GP as an outpatient and is getting help for her anxiety. But I think "happy pear" speaks for itself - diet affects the way you feel significantly so I don't think she plans to return to the way she ate before, just make some changes to make sure she's getting enough. Thanks for all the info!

great video! Love the accent! I was protein deficient ( as per blood testing and things i had noticed with my physical performance and health ) after 7 or so years raw vegan and 5 or so fruitarian...

Xenia Aidonopoulou the only way you can be protein deficient is if you're actually starving to death

I am going to sound really dumb T.T But I am making a slow transition to veganism so I need all the advice and knowledge I can get. I worry about not getting enough calcium, as my bones are so rubbish and achey (my family has a history of arthritis). I drink lots of rice milk and hazelnut milk etc. Could any one tell me what other foods contain a lot of calcium??
@magicmartin188 жыл бұрын
Good on ya for going vegan! Yep, eat almonds, kale (and other leafy greens, except spinach), dried figs, and hummus, and drink fortified vegan milks (e.g. soy milk) for calcium. You can, of course, take a supplement as well, if you wish.

Sesame is actually higher in calcium than milk😊

I haven't heard of people being hospitalized for protein deficiency, but vitamin B-12 comes from many meat and dairy products, and I have heard of people having a vitamin b deficiency. I'm just wondering how you intake that kind of vitamin without eating its sources.

+Tiffany Liu Most vegetarians and vegans will have a tub of nutritional yeast in there press and they'll mix it in with their meals, it's packed with Vit B12.

One question....where do vegans get vitamin B12?You can only find B12 in white meat. Vitamin B12 is involved in the cellular metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids. It is essential in the production of blood cells in bone marrow, and for nerve sheaths and proteins. Vitamin B12 functions as a co-enzyme in intermediary metabolism for the methionine synthase reaction with methylcobalamin, and the methylmalonyl CoA mutase reaction with adenosylcobalamin. The B12 vitamin is not available from plant products, making B12 deficiency a legitimate concern for vegans. Manufacturers of plant-based foods will sometimes report B12 content, leading to confusion about what sources yield B12. The confusion arises because the standard US Pharmacopeia (USP) method for measuring the B12 content does not measure the B12 directly. Instead, it measures a bacterial response to the food. Chemical variants of the B12 vitamin found in plant sources are active for bacteria, but cannot be used by the human body. All these info for B12 can be found all around the internet
