Ever thought about where the line is drawn when it comes to originality and your art? I used to struggle with it so much in the early days of my art journey especially the part where we are learning and figuring things out. This video I share with you my opinion and what it means to make it your own :)
Artist mentioned in this video: Denise Peters - denaisx?utm...
📌Join The Floral Foundation - a $7/ month membership where I help artists to get started and fill the gaps in their self-taught journey with greater structure and guidance so they can spend more time painting and less time connecting the dots. I definitely went through a phase where I felt I was copying alot! But I realise now on hindsight, how important it was to do all that copying and tutorials. Because painting everything I loved and see other artists do, totally informed me on how I paint the next time I did it 'on my own". Priceless actually. So I will still continue mimicking and copying if I see an artist create something so gorgeous because I know somehow by magic, it will be filtered into my being, my body and it will come out the other side not the same anyway. Always love your topics for discussion Jill! X and yes omg the internet is so full of inspiration and distraction, I love it and despise it at the same time.

Thank you Jillian for sharing about a subject many of us struggle with. I know I rely too much on tutorials. For me, composition and focal points are my biggest sources of frustration. Looking at a landscape and deciding what to include and what the focal point should be is difficult. Making up a floral composition also leaves me feeling like I missed the mark. Leaf placement is a mystery. I am trying to paint more from photos instead of tutorials.

I also struggle with letting go of tutorials. It was refreshing to hear your thoughts on this subject. I find that I do my best work when I am not following a tutorial; when I have to use my own style or insticts on what something should be. The tutorials have really helped me with things like composition, depth, hue, etc.... It has helped to guide me towards my own style which I am slowly finding. Thank you! I always enjoy watching your videos.

Thank you. I want my art to reflect me. But I do learn from many artist different skill sets or tools which have helped me. I am very much inspired by watching you paint. Your style is not my style But, I learn as much from what you say as by what you do. Thank you.

How do you know what I’m thinking?! 😂 Seriously, I love your paintings, and I so much appreciate that learning has been challenging for you, too! One reason I was attracted to your videos (and your courses) was because I was frustrated with just copying tutorials. I don’t know why, exactly, but hearing you talk about how you have felt about your watercolor painting journey is very helpful. Thank you.

hello, I often think about this topic. when my original work looks like it was inspired by someone else's existing work ... I often say jokingly "is there no original thought anymore" and then my husband can just pick up a brush and creates a real original , unique piece , blowing my mind and leaving me in his dust with my brush dry ( from observing him in action , which also blows my mind , his work goes through so much transition till done and bam! there it is! beautiful , interesting and a finished piece.. ,,,,, while me ... i'm still thinking , trying to create an original , (who am I kidding). still trying to start .. therefore my hopefully helpful advise is to just dive into painting , don't think too much about it ,,, have fun till it turns into something and then focus in for the finish,,,,whenever that may be. Thank you for your channel and sharing Happy painting everyone

❤I enjoyed reading ur comment and thoughts. U r right that it can feel hard to define what is original anymore. It is a bit diluted everywhere because there is so much sharing taking place ❤

Aw.. I loved this video and your moving gouache painting. A childlike creation. So beautiful and innocent. Yes - there is a fine line between imitation and inspiration.. and I feel both are valid. I wonder if we just have to trust that, as we grow, inspiration will naturally take the lead and we will be free to be truly inspired .. (and I suppose be patient with where we are in that growth) xx

I love your perspective. It is so freeing to feel like we don't need to box ourselves in either categories but to allow them to be and trust the journey of becoming. Thank u for this Helen

Very interesting subject Jillian. Too often I just take the easy way and try to copy a tutorial rather than painting from my experience and heart. The confidence just isn't there yet.

Wonderful video Jillian! Watching your daughter look with so much wonder and curiosity reminds me to always look at nature with childlike eyes. You bring up so many great points of social media with inspiration vs imitation. I think finding inspiration is great but you must make it your own work! If someone is imitating to learn for fun, that is one thing, but copying to gain financially or for notoriety is another. Ultimately, learning from others is how all artist start out but finding your own voice, your own style, is always the goal.

So well said❤❤ I agree with u I think the fine line is when you start to sell something that was imitated - I feel that's really an issue of ethics that the artist has to think about😊
