Face it: there's one thing we all get when we go to an Indian-Pakistani restaurant: chicken tikka masala. But what if we told you that the popular, creamy dish might not actually be from the Sub-Continent? Instead, the dish has a complicated origin story that, in part, tells the story of the Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi immigrants who built the United Kingdom's famous curry houses that today are on the brink of disappearing.

British curry is like New York style pizza. It's something which has developed separately from traditional Indian, Bengali, Pakistani foods over a number of generations. Nobody is disputing curry's origin, but getting a curry in Sheffield is worlds apart from getting one in Delhi.

Tikka Masala is a variant of the Makhani gravy which had originated in Punjab ages before the British knew what it was.
