Ginseng expert, Bob Beyfuss, explains the best forest types to look for when growing ginseng. While ginseng does not like a lot of nutrients, it does prefer calcium-rich soils. Bob identifies many different plants within the understory that signify whether the site is good for growing ginseng.

people...MR. BOB BEYFUSS to me is one of the worlds most informative, foremost knowledgeable educators on wild american ginseng. I have attended some of his classes in our home area in new york. he worked for the cooperative extension programs and i can tell you as a life long ginseng expert myself of 42 yrs. this is the gentleman (you would want to pay close attention too). even as far as growing woods grown and wild simulated ginseng on your own private property. he is the MOST INFORMATIVE man to ask any questions.....he is the BEST hands down. most important he is a great ethical steward of this renewable resource and just an extremely classy man....PAY VERY CLOSE ATTENTION AS TO WHAT HE SAYS...hello bob :)

My friend in Korea said, he puts a lot of compost and replace the soil completely in 6 years when he harvests the ginseng. Now, i think that i understood it was because of depletion of calcium after seeing this video. Also, the medicinal nutrition might have been the calcium and it might be true with deer antler as well. Asians were rice-eating farmers and meat was rare and might be calcium too.

Live in the northern panhandle area of Florida near the Alabama and Georgia state lines. have good land for growing it here as well. I planted my own about 2 yeas ago. so far the plants are looking good, I plant about 100 seeds a year. hope make least $6,000 a year and pay my property taxes. I'm on SSDI due to Parkinson. The money will come in handy. Also do homey mushrooms as a money crop

I have a north-facing wooded hill in the New River valley of NC. In late September, I look for a cluster of bright red berries among some ferns, and I try to plant them on a hillside mulched with poplar leaves. I hope to have a honey hole in a few years. One thing that helps in having a fence enclosing the hillside to keep the deer from eating the plants.

I thought that the deer only eat the top of the ginseng plant, and dont eat it down to the roots or to the buds for the following year which should not affect ginseng from re-shooting out. Is this not right or was I misinformed? I want to plant GInseng in a forested well shaded area facing north where maples grow, but i know there are a lot of deer in this area. SHould i even bother if the deer really eat up the whole plant?
@exforestfarming
@exforestfarming 7 жыл бұрын
Hi B Charron, Program Director at Shaver's Creek Environmental Center, Eric Burkhart, says that deer do indeed consume the tops of ginseng, although it is not the most preferred browse in forest understories. Deer can lead to loss of vigor and decline (possibly even mortality) in ginseng through repeated browse. Ginseng only produces a single top each year and so when deer browse they remove the ability of plants to photosynthesize and/or reproduce. Repeated browse year after year will naturally lead to decline in mature plants, and lack of recruitment (seedling production).
@charronfamilyconnect
@charronfamilyconnect 7 жыл бұрын
Okay, thanks. That is good to know. I guess I will have to fence the area to discourage consumption from deer.

Greetings. I live in NW Oregon and am curious about growing ginseng here. For the most part I'm looking at forests that have a mix of evergreen as well as deciduous trees. The soil is usually a good silty loam, not too acidic, with plenty of drainage. My biggest thought is, will it grow well? I would start by clearing blackberry bushes, ferns, and other plants from the ground, but would leave the small ground cover such as leaves, pine needles, and other small plants. Has anyone grown wild or simulated wild ginseng in NW Oregon or even Washington?
@exforestfarming
@exforestfarming 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Seth, Richo Cech claims to be successfully growing ginseng on a small scale in Oregon in the forest. He writes about his experiences in this book: strictlymedicinalseeds.com/product/growing-at-risk-medicinal-herbs-second-edition-by-richo-cech/ Aside from Richo, I don't know of anyone who has been successful. I imagine its possible of a small hobby scale (for personal consumption) but not sure about larger commercial production. You might want to focus on maple dominated forests (Big leaf and Vine maple are the western coastal species) if possible as ginseng tends to grow in maple dominated stands in the east. Best of luck to you!

Shane Dahlke Hi Shane, if you look at our Lifecycle of Ginseng video, that might help explain the two cold periods, or winters, that a ginseng seed needs in order to break dormancy. It is possible that the seed you bought have been stratified and need only one more cold period in order to germinate. You should plant them before winter so they get the required amount of chilling hours. Also see our series on ginseng seed stratification...that explains a bit about ginseng's varying genetics. Hope that helps. Good luck with your crop!

Thank you so much for the information! i am in New Brunswick Canada, living on a 100 acre tree farm, some old growth forest on the mountain. there are many sugar maple on the ridge and I was curious if whether or not what I was looking at was actually Ginseng. Now I am sure it is and am looking forward to seeing it again this year. What color is the flower when in season and does it flower around the same time as the other plants you mentioned?
@exforestfarming

Tanner Grim Beech is not generally as highly regarded as a ginseng companion tree as is sugar maple, north of PA or Tulip Poplar elsewhere, but yes, ginseng will grow under beech, especially if it is a mixed beech/sugar maple association. I would suggest a soil test that reports pounds of available calcium per acre. If the Calcium levels are below 1,500 pounds per acre, ginseng is not likely to thrive. High calcium levels however are no guarantee that ginseng will grow. A soil test is useful in ruling out sites but cannot not predict success. It is just more complicated than that!
