Awesome! My dad served in WWII with Roy Lichtenstein and they drew maps together and did reconnaissance for the 69th Infantry Combat Engineers Battalion. They were all throughout Europe together in England, France, Belgium and Germany during the war. Roy was unknown at the time, but they did do some large paintings together of army cartoons for a commander as an odd job. My dad went on to design Future cars in the Advanced Styling Division of Ford Lincoln Mercury and then design directed four major companies in his art and design career. Roy got his break with Leo Castelli when he took on representing him and gave him a solo show that sold out before it even opened. I think Warhol came to Leo first and Leo did not take Warhol and then about a week or so later Roy showed up and Leo liked his work more and the rest is art history. I believe this was in the early 1960's. I think Roy was teaching at Rutgers University and a man named Alan Kaprow was doing these gatherings of artists called "Happenings" and Alan taught at the same university and that's when Rauschenberg and Johns and Roy all met at these happenings. Roy was unsure about what he was doing with the cartoon type work and kind of had them tucked away and Kaprow saw something tucked away and asked Roy what is that? He then kind of nudged him to go try and get gallery representation with that work. There's some youtube videos of Leo Castelli talking about his thoughts on artists. I'm a painter but most of my art career was spent working within major corporations as a graphic designer/ illustrator. I always kept painting and so now at age 64 have found a sort of rebirth in my art career as a painter and doing well with it. It's a journey.
