First of all: All German youth whether families of Nazi supporters or not were forced to join Hitler Jugend after late 1930's. Just like majority of Russians during Soviet period were far from being communists the same could be said about German youth during Hitler era. Many these members of Hitler Youth came from Social Democratic or devoted Catholic families and were reluctant members. Same as claiming that all white southerners during Jim Crow were racist members of Ku Klux Klan. Of course they were not. Majority of people never are extremists.

i think it was to save him from either the torture of the americans or the torture of being with her overall. his father could’ve easily shot leyna, but chose not to because she was carrying his sons baby, so it was kind of a kill me or my child kind of thing. black people were still discriminated against long after this, even today by some people. so really, their relationship would have never worked out during this time.

This movie is available on DVD, but it's for Region 2 (Pal). It's not on any Region 1 DVD yet. I believe it can be viewed on Amazon through their streaming services. I had the foresight to see the film in the cinema the FIRST day it opened, and lucky that I did because it disappeared over the weekend and never returned (I had read about this movie in the making at least 2 or 3 years before it's opening in 2018 as one of the director's projects). It seems that some of the critics and public had found the theme of a love affair between a Hitler Youth/later SS man and a bi-racial Black girl in Nazi Germany too much to swallow, not realizing that sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. There had been a few liasons in the camps between Jewish women and some members of the SS who had to be careful not to get caught (or they'd be in serious trouble), but the notion that the girl in question was a bi-racial "Black" girl might have made them sputter and spew their coffee all over themselves. There were some bi-racial Blacks in Germany, and in the case of this film's backstory, the character, Lena, was from the Rhineland. After WW1, the Rhineland had been occupied by the French army who also had French African soldiers in their company. The French Africans performed their duties well and correctly, and in some cases liasons were struck up between French African men and white German women. This angered German society across class lines, and soon invented stories of the brutal "rape" of German women were spreading. The children born of these liasons were labeled, "Rheinland Bastards" or "Germany's Black Shame", and when they reached puberty, they were to be "sterilized", which was done without anesthesia. About 300 of these children were so-treated.

All this love story felt so incredible and accelerated, it did not give me time to digest anything, and when I did it seemed absolutely badly written. The girl's doubts, and the fleeting interest of the German boy, the foreseeable pregnancy ... all this disappointed me, it is not told in a poetic way, but by chance.

People hating on this movie really don’t get it. Those young boys were forced to join the military. They didn’t have a fucking choice. Do you think all of them or even the majority were actually racist? They were just kids. Of course they would fall in love - you can’t tell someone who they’re supposed to fall in love with.
