Pewdiepie tried this. He has no clue what to do but has a lot of money. If anyone can build a more-fair platform for content creation than KZbin, it's Linus Media. It's a risky investment to compete with a hard-monopoly like KZbin but if marketing is aggressive enough it may work

I'm not able to apply because I already work as a programmer, but I want to strongly urge you not to make your coding challenge time sensitive. Those things usually just induce unnecessary feelings of stress and anxiety, as well as the risk that developers won't actually write their best code because they're too concerned about meeting the deadlines. Perhaps you're new to hiring devs so maybe you don't know this, but time-based code challenges are generally frowned upon. To be clear, when I say "time-based" I mean, like, "You have 72 hours to do..." That's not cool. However, "We'd like you to submit this within 3 days" is a lot better. Your prospective devs still know when you want it, but you're not forcing them. Just my thoughts as a developer myself. Good luck to all that apply!

GhostPengy I've been applying to all sorts of different software development companies lately, and if any of them had an 8 hour long assessment, I most likely would have politely told them I wasn't interested. The common time requirements for these is about 2 hours or so within the 3-7 days after they give access
@Niosus
@Niosus 7 жыл бұрын
I also doubt the usefulness of non-live coding challenges. I don't know of any company that doesn't do the code interviews live. The thought process is actually much more important than the code that comes out. All good developers will come up with a good solution, each with some upsides and downsides. The question is what decisions were made along the way, and how the solution matches the goals of those decisions. Even simple things like trading memory capacity for CPU time, abstraction versus simplicity, when to use libraries and when to roll your own... Those have a massive impact and cannot be made in a vacuum. I'd recommend they do it like Google: First filter by resume, call the good candidates for 10-15 minutes to get a first impression and schedule a coding interview after that. It's much easier to read a resume and have a call than to judge people based on a bit of code.

I'm so glad that documentation was made as important as it was here. I just finished a maintenance cycle on a legacy project with a stupid-robust API split between 700 db tables, 1500 lines PHP, and double that in JavaScript. Not a single damn comment or doc page; I had to hand trace every time I wanted to find anything. Remember kids, not commenting isn't job security - it's proactively being a douche to your successor.

Zenolijo With just 5 programmers a lot can be achieved within a couple of months. With a group of unexperienced students (I was one of them) we made a functioning simulator for building evacuation with fire spreading and stuff. Get a few programmers who know their stuff and this product could be something really cool in a year.

I am currently in a team of 15 programmers and I can assure you that things always takes double the time you would expect. Creating a scalable alternative to youtube with just 5 employees is silly to say the least. To make a extremely simplified beta with just basic video steaming, a comment section, channels and a subscription feed that is scalable I'd estimate that it'd take 8 months for 20 people, then as a rule of thumb it generally takes 1.5-2x the time that you estimate so it would probably take 12-16 months.

I like your mission statement, people deserve a way to be less dependent on these giant social media corporations. But your platform will also be reliant on advertisers to sustain itself, so the problem is likely to repeat itself, should you succeed. What is needed is somekind of open source CMS platform centered on video creation and sharing, that you can put in a Docker container and duplicate at will for little cost. Make it open source on GitHub and you'll have hundreds of bored youtube engineers working on it for free. I know I would.

They seem to have like 3 or 4 engineers working right now. I can't imagine they have only one position open right now. They seem to be looking for javascript / node engineers that are willing to specialize into a niche for this. But this is all very unclear from this job posting, honestly. I'm more skeptic about this being a job posting on youtube. It's more like a competition you might win, where the price is working with LTT. I mean, come on. Be professional, please.

Software engineer here. Not interested in your position (I don't have the skills you are looking for, though I will put this out to my skilled friends), but I notice that there is quite a bit of work you are looking to get out of one person. I wish you the best, but it might be more advantageous (if you can get the $$$$$$$) to hire a few people. Hopefully you also have a good lead developer, that has real experience. Best of luck, Luke!

The whole idea is lame. They are trying to recreate KZbin w/o 1. The financial resources or advertising 2. Without enough real developers to do it correctly. Expecting 1 person to do all that is asking for delays and problems.

The way KZbin has been doing things as of late has made it hard for new creator like myself to get the motivation to make more content. It's like if you don't get all of your friends and family to watch, or share, you're not going to go anywhere. I can't wait for floatplane to be up and running for everyone. I will definitely jump on the floatplane bandwagon. Good luck, I believe in you

It's a great idea in theory. The whole idea is great for content creators. While everyone else seems to think this idea has no base in reality and it will end up like many other social platforms, I think otherwise. Unlike other content platforms this is being backed by LMG which has a large follower base and isnt being started from scratch. I hope you can make this work. Good luck 👍

This may not sound like it'd be the case, but it really works. There's a reason why the Linux server community is so active and engaging. Because every piece of information is usually available, and freely modifiable to everyone. In the end, this benefits everyone including the creator.

Assuming they aren't rolling their own transcode service (god I hope not) and are going with the elastic encoder offered by AWS, its doable. I built the back-end of a youtube knock-off on my own at my last job, if it weren't for chronic mismanagement it would have been a pretty neat site.

1) How will you deal with the conflict of interest (you being a supposedly impartial video distributor, whilst also being a content creator). 2) KZbin has issues with profitability, how do you hope to get around this?
@omfgblondie
@omfgblondie 7 жыл бұрын
1. The only time I would see a conflict of interest is if they are reviewing platforms like Floatplane. I don't see how them hosting their own platform while making videos for that platform creates a conflict of interest. 2. Floatplane has a subscription cost, currently. Most likely, that's what they're gonna continue with for videos.
@ninjapenguinblock
@ninjapenguinblock 7 жыл бұрын
At the moment at least, they are charging the end user a subscription fee. They are taking a similar structure to vessel, hold for the whole being bought and killed portion though.
@WhRunescape
@WhRunescape 7 жыл бұрын
There's a big conflict of interest - video suggestion algorithm, CPM (both preferential adverts and more adverts), tailoring the algorithm to prefer video lengths similar to theirs, being more inclined to improve the platform in a manner that benefits them specifically rather than looking to improve every facet of it. These are just some I came up with off the top of my head, they're not all infallible just worth considering which is why I asked the question.

The only problem with the pay-for-content stuff is that something like Netflix or Hulu has a more mature audience which has the ability to pay. Something like KZbin has a younger audience which would have to get approval from an adult. -- I also just started wondering why Netflix hasn't branched into KZbin territory.
@WhRunescape
@WhRunescape 7 жыл бұрын
It's not really a viable business doing what KZbin does - it's just not profitable (yet?) and the issue of how to monetise it effectively is tough without undermining what made it popular in the first place. Look at everything KZbin is having to do to maintain the few advertising partners it has (detailed vetting of videos to ensure it's appropriate) combined with keeping content creators happy (not automating stuff (like video takedowns), providing an algorithm that helps creators make a sustainable living, rather than generate the most money, protection from false copyright strikes etc.). That's not to say Netflix won't do it, just that there's plenty of reasons why they might not want to.

Why not make the platform open source? I think there's a lot of value in making the whole project an open-source video platform that the community can contribute to as a whole. I feel like a lot of people in the LTT community would be willing to give part of their time to the cause ( I know I would). You would have the benefit of still having your core developers guiding the project, and working full time but you can let the LTT community give back.

Mostly because their point here is to create a subscription-based service relatively similar to Vessel in the regard that you can let some people see videos you're offering slightly earlier if they're willing to pay some money for it. If it was done via open source, people would expect the service to be free to use as well, which would then defeat the point of it in replacing Vessel.

The criteria for the job they described would be a senior expert level full web developer. That would put the salary on average around 137k ( www.indeed.com/salaries/Node+Js+Developer-Salaries,-San+Francisco%2C+CA ). I found a lot of time employers want senior level experience for entry-level pay. For someone to really understand full stack web development, hardcore encoding experience, post graduate education, and coding ability, the base salary would easily be 250k+ given the team size. Anyway, best of luck, maybe I'll apply. The area that most youtube clone sites get hurt is storage and bandwidth. Streaming and storage on a large scale are expensive with AWS.
