Dave Tipton as almost pedantic with his cabinet restorations. Definitely a great channel to watch for that, and he is an Australian like me, so have to promote him a bit :). Don is another good one to watch, Don's Old Radio Shed. Another Aussie, from the other side of the country :) You hit the nail on the head today. Keep it simple, only get the equipment you will use and actually need. We don't need a lab like Paul Carlson's to align a radio :) He is great, don't get me wrong. He got me into the hobby, but you can get by on a lot less gear.

Thank you for making a very interesting and helpful video. I am recently retired and looking forward to setting up my own electronics test bench. Your channel is very motivating.

Manuel I learn something new with each of your videos. I will certainly give AM rejection a try when tuning the last FM coil. I didn’t know about the ELV small transmitter. As an amateur radio operator I own a Comet antenna analyzer (SWR analyzer). To measure the SWR of an antenna it transmits a very small RF signal. Although it will not modulate an audio signal, I simply measured the negative voltage from the ratio detector capacitor with the radio dial to 88 and the Analyzer to 88MHz to adjust the RF. Thanks.

I have found looking at early radio and TV articles from the 1930s through 1950s demonstrates your point of the keep it simple it's a hobby. The earlier wireless magazines on regenerative receivers, crystal sets etc, are simpler but do a great job of teach the art of troubleshooting.

@ 33:33 I agree entirely. You have shown that you can get good alignment results using the equipment that you have on hand, without spending top dollar on equipment at auction that may or may not work upon arrival. I will probably be "tinkering" with some reasonably priced signal sources, and "Visual analyzer devices" going forward, but for now my main equipment purchase has been a cap tester, (Sencore LC102) that can test for value, ESR, leakage and dielectric absorption in one unit without fumbling for multiple devices to test with, as to me it seems that the value, leakage and ESR tests are the best ones to indicate a good or bad device. Glad you are making progress, and hope it all comes together soon!

Once more great job done. Maybe you can do a short on the cabinet. Someone has to challenge David and it's not gonna be me 😉

How easy is it to go off track when troubleshooting, as you said the clues were all there but we tend to get a line of thought and it's difficult to get off it. If you hadn't taken the cover off during the restore you would have had a different line of thought I imagine. The first FM radio I attempted to align used the AM rejection method to balance the ratio detector, it works well and is a perfectly acceptable method for doing same (Nordmende I think). Thanks for the shoutout re cabinet restores, I haven't done many lately, I seem to be doing other people's stuff but I have a few lined up for this year. Good video Manuel 👍😀

I’ve done some alignments of the FM by ear on one or two occasions, then got all fancy to check how close it was. It was surprisingly good. My obsessive nature would never let me leave it like that, but it just goes to show how good our senses can be.

Excellent work young man. I have always been a little nervous of touching FM settings. Not done a radio for some time now, but maybe on the next one?

Too bad your across the big pond from me otherwise I'd give you a Telefunken Console system that seems to date back to the mid 1950s. I picked it up at a thrift store four years ago in a very rural part of NY state. The power amplifier seems to be the big issue that it has, but after bringing it home I was able to extract a signal from what I'd call a preamplifier output located on a pair of RCA jacks on the unit's rear panel and listen to its shortwave, medium wave, & FM modulated band radio by running it into a line-in on a modern stereo. Tube radios and amplifiers are not something I feel comfortable with thus I have done nothing with it. Would like to see it go to one who can bring it back to life. If I still lived in Albany NY it'd be easy to have one take it off my hands, but having retired to a remote area of the Catskills is a different story with more bears in the neighborhood than people let alone radio enthusiasts.
