Excellent video as always, what is the inner tomb like? Are there any historical sketches of how the caskets are set up inside or maybe what condition they would be in today, Love Mount Vernons glad we still have it

Why is Martha called a consort? He wasn't a reigning monarch.

Amitis, it is very odd. The tomb and sarcophagi were built long after the Washingtons' death. When we asked our historical interpretation team we recieved the following response: The answer is, we don’t really know why it says that. In February 1837, John Struthers, a Philadelphia sculptor, wrote to Lawrence Lewis, General Washington’s nephew and executor of his will, offering to make a sarcophagus for the vault. Lawrence Lewis deferred to Struther’s “experience to make it in form and manner as you may think best.” Basically, he left it to the sculptor to put on the sarcophagus what he felt was appropriate. The quote comes from a letter from Lawrence Lewis to John Struthers, February 22, 1837.

I have a question. In this video Jeremy Ray, Manager of History Interpretation at Mt. Vernon, refers to George Washington consistently as General Washington. Is there an order of precedence that I'm unaware of? Wouldn't President Washington be the higher rank? Or is the practice of allowing former Presidents the honor of continuing to be addressed as "President" merely a tradition without the legal standing as is rank (which is retained by Right of Commission)?

There is only one thing I am curious about. Why, on Martha Washington's sarcophagus, it simply says "Martha consort of Washington." Isn't that just a little odd?

Hi Bill, we asked our manager of history interpretation and he provided the following: The answer is, we don’t really know why it says that. In February 1837, John Struthers, a Philadelphia sculptor, wrote to Lawrence Lewis, General Washington’s nephew and executor of his will, offering to make a sarcophagus for the vault. Why hasn't the Mount Vernon estate made corrections? I think it's a little rude to have the remains of the actual First Lady of this country lie in a sarcophagus that says that. Don't you think? We all know what the word consort means, but the majority of everyday people have a little more information on their final resting place than what Mrs. Washington received. Also, why wasn't the tomb opening made bigger so the sarcophagi would fit inside?

@@tonyd9455 I don't think we should ever "correct history." Maybe we should view it as it is, & if there are problems, then correct ourselves in the lives we live today.

so I don't know what happened with George Washington as much as his teeth was it contributed to his age he didn't brush his teeth they fell apart because it was probably eating a lot of candy when he was young I would like to know more about him and I was a kid I heard he chopped down the cherry tree did he actually do that furthermore in Delaware he was fighting and he stood on the boat Crossing the Delaware very interesting fascinating spectacular I would like to know more about this man and what he stood for what he was and what his actions were and did he win his Wars I know in Canadian history that the United States did it talk Canada and that was a few days of the war and Canada won that war I can imagine what this country would be if candidate did lose that war will we be a part of the United States and if so we would probably have one prime president no prime minister and furthermore I guess our boss is the United States president I hope I said that right your present United States is our boss that sounds a heck of a lot better but still we take our actions to what he says even though our prime minister doesn't want anything to do with them because about what he is determined to do is drop a nuclear bomb on North Korea ending North Korea even though the nuclear fallout is going to spread it's going to create havoc was South Korea and furthermore wherever the nuclear fallout spreads other people are going to pay for that action too depending on what type of nuclear bomb he is going to use is it going to use a hydrogen bomb or nuclear bomb that depends on what he wants to do but he better take action quick before this nutty person of North Korea decides to do something to the United States of America and he better take it easy and what he does because some other idiot might do a repercussion on him taking United States 3/4 off the map and look at that jerk that just in Las Vegas some people are pretty mad about Trump being in power and also takes Refuge against the people who voted him in power this is what I can see because there is a whole lot of people in the beginning when Trump got in power that were trying to tell him get out and man oh man oh man I can't believe what the heck is going on now we're looking at full-scale third world war and this'll be the war of all wars and I did speak to the fellow of the Philadelphia Project one of the sailors that survived he told me what's going to happen because he went into another dimension and came back in 1982 so I mean to say Einstein's theory about time travel is plausible but the thing is some people went overboard while on the ground up in time travel and the people that stayed on board and up and bedded into the ship go on KZbin and look at the Philadelphia Project if you can find that sailor after that episode you could talk to him like I did it'll be the most interesting thing that you had ever done I did and it was interesting very interesting he's alive today but one fellow wound up staying in the future he also told me once this nuclear fallout is going to happen there will be in never ever a president again after this one but like I said look up the Philadelphia Project and keep searching through it until you find out what he went through going into time to the part where he came back that's all I'm going to tell you that's up to you if you want to find out or not you can come back to me and talk to me anytime you like it would be a pleasure God bless you I like your history because I'm fascinated in history it's been a remarkable situation with you God bless you accept Jesus in your heart and walk in his footsteps become a Christian God will help you as long as you believe in him TCB Elvis Presley's third son amen

@mountvernon 7 жыл бұрын
Hi fghjkyy hy, great question! Although he resigned his commission after the Revolution, and gives up his role as commander in chief when he resigns from the presidency in 1797, Washington does become a general again in 1798. In July of that year, Washington is commissioned a lieutenant general and “commander in chief of all armies raised or to be raised” by John Adams during the buildup to the Quasi War. This letter from James McHenry to GW provides a good summary of what happens, along with the digital encyclopedia page. rotunda.upress.virginia.edu/founders/GEWN-06-02-02-0289 www.mountvernon.org/digital-encyclopedia/article/quasi-war/

I noticed a lot of things back in George Washington Times were made certain things are made of lead Mike paints and wallpapers to vibrant the color and then George Washington's teeth on top of that and you're talking about him getting some kind of a throat disease I guess the steel pins in his mouth that were holding his teeth together weren't to name any good including the base of the teeth were in lined with LED that is poison the only thing that wouldn't have gave him any problems would have been the brass but who wants to walk around with yellow teeth only people that think they're smart and put gold in their mouth touching there's a credit card today's some people using gold and diamonds to make for teeth because those signs today does not compare to yesterday they're making a lot of mistakes today putting these metal fillings in your mouth that contain the worst poison ever created by man Mercury there you go a lot of people in the United States are still using these kind of feelings and you're going to wind up with a lot of people who need help in the long run do you realize what Mercury does to the human body even though inhaling the fumes the fumes create Illusions not could imagine ingesting the Mercury it's embedded into your fat fatty tissues in based into your meat into your veins where your blood goes it'll start screwing up your veins before it starts screwing anything else up but once it reaches the brain you might as well be dead anyhow because the poison is too far into your body yes mercury poisoning and it's going on throughout the United States right now Canada does not use that kind of feeling anymore we got rid of that years ago back in the 70s
