I was raised Lutheran and Lent was a very important part of the church year. We had special services every Wednesday night, and we special devotions at home. I was received into the Catholic Church 8 years ago, and Lent has taken on its importance again. In between, I was a Southern Baptist for 10 years and Lent was not observed. I really missed Lent! I missed the 40 days of contemplation and prayer. I missed the spiritual solitude that Lent can bring; that time when the Holy Spirit speaks the most clearly. I also found that Easter didn't mean as much because so little emphasis was put on Christ's suffering and sacrifice. Personally, I am thankful for the Lenten journey and experience. May each of you experience God's Lenten graces during this holy time.
@kimfleury7 жыл бұрын
+Lisa Herrling Thank you, and may you grow ever closer to Him. I love your line, "when the Holy Spirit speaks the most clearly." True story: when I was in an atheist phase, I continued fasting and sacrificing during Lent. I felt an urge to do this. I told myself it was probably just a desire for self-discipline (it wasn't training from childhood, my family didn't observe Lent, I'd only picked it up as an adult). Now I think it was probably the Holy Spirit wooing me to continue seeking Him, because it did stir something spiritual.

I am not a roman catholic. I am an Orthodox Christian however the 40 days fasting is necessary before Pascha and we fast as well as we can to do what Jesus did in the desert. We do that together as one church. It will not make you saved or not saved but it will help you spiritually to fast as that is a common theme in the Bible. Prayer and Fasting.

Hmm. You gave me(a non-Catholic Christian) something to stew on. I had often wondered myself why many churches don't make as big of a deal of Lent and the many things/events leading up to, Easter, aside from Easter itself, especially with so many people who say they're Christian but aren't really "feeling" or find reason to fully act/live out their faith coming in and out of churches... I think these traditions we so often neglect are one of the primary reason. We have nothing to constantly redirect us, nothing really calling us to stop and reflect or in a small way "feel" connected to Christ's suffering or even our own religious history/traditions/past. I think,too, that's what draws me to this channel. So many speakers on this channel just have this....unwavering centeredness about them. Like they know who they are in Christ, they are at peace with whatever God has called them to do. They know their church history or at least, if nothing else, they know who they are within and beyond the church walls. I hope I'm making sense without sounding overly creepy😓. Anyways, thank you for bringing up these points, Father, and making me re-think my own thoughts on the events/holy days leading up to Easter. Blessings to you and yours!

+Mama Jenn -- it seems odd to me that my non-Catholic Christian friends talk of praying and fasting as Scripture exhorts, but don't connect it to a penitential season leading up to the Crucifixion (without which there is no Resurrection, no defeat of satan, sin and death). Imagine if the whole Church -- Catholic and non-Catholic -- were all fasting for the same 40 days. How much grace would the Holy Spirit pour out on us if we all unified in that sacrifice? Uniting in prayer is powerful. May God bless you!

Prayer takes on more power in numbers... I just remembered how much fun Lent was when i was a kid. Fasting and Lenten practices were done as a thing that everyone in our grade school class shared and participated in. We talked about it, went to church, prayed about it, We were really proud to tell everyone what we were doing to celebrate Lent and usually everybody in the family honored us and also fasted the same thing. It was much easier that way to stick to it. If you had support from class mates, family, friends it was more successful and Everybody practice it in some way. I know Jesus said don't let people know you are fasting... but it can be beneficial.

I than started actually studying and trying to understand my faith and I'm been kicking myself in the butt since. This year I participated in lent like I've never have before. I fasted every day, I prayed every day, my wife and I participated in every mass that we could go to. And today I can honestly tell you that I am a different person from the one who started lent. To all my brothers and sisters (but especially my brothers, be a MAN) and give your whole heart to our Savior Jesus the Christ. If you do, you will look back at your old self and wonder who was that person...... God Bless everyone.... And Sisters, please don't be angry with me, we're just trying to catch up to you ladies... :-)

I grew up Catholic but did not feel connected. I stopped being Catholic over 15 years ago. The past couple years I have been praying to God and He has been doing wonderful things in my life and speaking to me. He led me and my husband to a non catholic church but last night I was reading the book of Luke and right at Luke 4:1-13 I got very sleepy and decided to go to sleep. I could not stop thinking about Jesus' 40 days of suffering and being tempted. He could have gave in but decided our salvation was worth enduring all of the suffering that occurred even before He was on the cross. I woke up realizing today is Ash Wednesday. I am not Catholic today, so it wasn't on my mind but I will be practicing Lent because I feel The Lord is telling me to. I believe God wants all of us Christ believers to take from each other and share in our practices rather than let them separate us. We have to know that no one religion is perfect or right but we can fellowship and take what the Lord puts on our heart. The Lord led me to post this, because I can't even recall if I've ever posted a comment on KZbin but felt I had to say this. God bless you all.

I was raised in the United Pentecostal Church and that has been the extent of my experience for my 40 something years. Lent was always this thing I heard about and for some reason associated it with Mardi Gras..lol. Well in the last year I have been exposed to the Anglican tradition through my wife and it's a MAJOR adjustment. I appreciate the explanation here. I'm learning to appreciate the traditions of the Anglican Church but its still a hard thing to digest after 40 something years of a tradition VERY different.
@jendoe94363 жыл бұрын
Mardi Gras is actually related to Lent. The name is translated as “Fat Tuesday” and is meant as a time for people to celebrate and eat before they begin the 40 days of fasting and prayer starting on Ash Wednesday, which as the name implies is the next day. Some early countries would celebrate in different ways depending on local traditions as the Church was spreading Christianity. The celebrations stuck and made their way around the world, and as with most things became more commercial and secularized as the religious influence was diminished.

My last lent changed my life. I am so thankful to our church (Roman Catholic) for teaching the importance of lent. I prayed the sorrowful mysteries everyday, twice a week in my school's chapel if lucky. I came out of it feeling like a new person. For me my lent was taking time out of my day (30 mins to an hour) of prayer and union with Christ. During that solemn period I cried multiply times while feeling an overwhelming sorrow, love, and joy for Jesus Christ. Since lent I have become much much closer to my Lord than before. I continuously prayed for the end of abortion with the rosary and throughout the day then Roe V Wade was overturned. My sister and I prayed for someone who was suffering with an illness since covid had begun and the next day he told us he was completely healed. My understanding of the world was completely expanded in a beautiful and deep way. I am so thankful 🙏
