I had the honor of meeting Norm 24 years ago at a Boston home show and asked him to sign my New Yankee Workshop book of which he did and then we struck up a conversation that lasted about 15 minutes. I can tell you there is nothing fake about this man! What you see is what you get when you meet him in person! Later as he was signing autographed post card, I got in line to get one for my neighbor, when I stood in front of him, looked at me me and said Hi Bob how are you doing. He treated me like a long lost friend. I asked for a card for my neighbor while the chatter around me was he's friends with Norm! I made me fell important! That's for the memory Norm!

He's a down to earth man who is extremely skilled in his craft, very humble indeed which makes him a well respected very well cherished man everybody loves to be around. This is why we all should do in our own lives, to be shown to earth and humble, never to think highly of oneself, always ready to help the downtrodden, always give helpful advice and have a caring heart and disposition.

I met Norm at the Hardware Show in Chicago around 1995. He was totally down to earth. I teased him that his show frustrated me, and made me realize how much I didn’t know. He immediately started teaching! In that calm, reassuring Norm voice, he said “just measure carefully, take your time, and, if it’s a difficult cut, practice a few on scrap.” He autographed a WGBH promo photo for me. It proudly hangs on my shop wall! Great guy!

Norm Abram is one of my heroes. I learned A LOT about woodworking by watching “The New Yankee Workshop.” I am a woodworker today because he explained so much about woodworking tools, their uses, and shop safety. Watching him measure, cut, and mill material was a real education for me. I’d like to shake his hand and thank him in person one day.

Many years ago when I was a young man, I was able to see Norm at a home show in NJ. I had a front-row seat for his presentation, I got to shake his hand and he autographed the front pocket of my tool belt. To me, that tool belt is like having a baseball mitt autographed by Mickey Mantle. Norm was welcoming, friendly and a real class act. He signed autographs on blocks of wood for little kids and stayed until everyone in the place who wanted to shake his hand got a chance to do so.

Norm is my age. Thanks to this old house, renovated a 1908 house in Los Angeles. I was retired as an Electronic engineer but was far from doing wood work. The house in Los Angeles is 5661 Ash St. I spent 2.5 year restoring two houses mostly by myself and when my son had free time. I did all the electrical, plumbing, carpentry, drywall finish, tiling bathroom, install earthquake hardware including strut one plywood. I drew the plans and my son put it on autocad. Thanks to This Old House and You Tube it was possible to finish the job. The building inspectors were amazed at City Hall. They said it was a father and son team doing what should have been done by professionals. Thanks to Norm and Silva and all of This Old House

Admittedly, I've not watched This Old House since the days of Bob Vila. I used to watch New Yankee Workshop all the time though. There was always something so calming about watching Norm build all of those beautiful things. Watching him encouraged me to take on my own projects (nowhere NEAR to his craftsmanship)...but he gave me the confidence to TRY. I've built many things over the years through the confidence he inspired...two of which stand out are the deck on my home which still stands today, over 20 years later just as solid as the day it was built...and a very nice wooden box in which my family placed my father-in-law's ashes before burial...beautifully routered edges, sanded within an inch of it's life, stained, with a place for my father-in-laws picture and military rank in the Marines (Lt. Col.). One thing I'll always remember about Norm is his love of using biscuits. 😀 Thank you Norm for inspiring the confidence for the guy to TRY new things! Have the most joyful of retirements!

Thank you, Norm. I always had a small desire to get into woodworking, more as a hobby a few years prior to when Norm came on the scene with The New Yankee Workshop. I started watching the New Yankee Workshop and that did it for me. Remember the episode where Norm built a toy chest with an in-laid checkerboard on top? Well, that was my first real woodworking project and with Norm's guidance from the show it turned out great. In fact, I made 3 more for family and friends and a couple that were auctioned off for charity events. I am now just turning 70 and my woodworking skills are much better than back then, especially with hand tools (hand planes, chisels, saws, etc.), but I owe all that to the encouragement and guidance from Norm.

Thanks to Norm and This Old House, I've fixed up 4 homes on weekends that I was living in at the time and flipped three of them. I've averaged a $130,000 profit on each house doing this along with the satisfaction of doing each project the right way the first time. So many home owners I know have to redo projects within 5 years because they hired poor contractors or cut corners when they did it themselves. The money they thought they were saving ends up costing them 3 times as much and additional time because they didn't learn from Norm and the gang. They've had a huge positive influence in my life. Thanks Norm.

My mom and I started watching This Old House in 1979 on PBS. As a kid I was fascinated by the show and my mom encouraged me to make things for myself. I got into woodworking because of him.

We are the same age. I was also building houses and renovating right along with him and his career. I built 18 custom homes over the years. But I learned about construction from shows like this Old House and that got me going on my lifelong hobby too. Today my 35 year old son has a large woodworking shop and makes the kinds of things Abrams did in the New Yankee Workshop. My sons would also watch the show with me.

NORM thank you for 40 plus years of pbs shows, I cant say I watched everyone but I surly watched most of them You remind me of my Dad he was a Finish carpenter in the 50s also had a stuco bussines, and taught me some of how things were done on older houses. With 5 kids we tore up the house it was an old house we rented, as kids in the 60s running around plaster would come loose he had to fix it. But I learned some stuff from him and a lot more from you. With exception of a few jobs I know my limits but ive DIY a lot of stuff on my house myself. Looking at some of the craftsmanship done here in the 90s it was more lets get it done, and sloppy work. Ive never seen you do sloppy work . Its done right or done agine right. I know how to fix what shouldn't have passed in the first place. All this from watching This Old House. I truly belive anyone getting work done on there home should watch the show and know what to expect and not accept poor craftsmanship. Pay what the jobs worth and dont complain about the price. Qulity work isn't free. Thanks for all you've taught me over the years.

I recall a few shows with Norm over the years, and they would start out him and a piece of an old house. (woodwork, door, thing-a-mabob) He then showed us a few well worn tools like a hand sharpened chisel, hammer, square, etc, and bring out some newfangled contraption to make life easier. One that sticks in my mind was an 8 foot long jig for installing door hinges from scratch. You placed it where you wanted the hinges on the door, locked up some setscrews, then placed it on the door opening and it perfectly transferred the dimensions. What I learned that day was sometimes show sponsors had cool stuff that us DIY people would never buy for a one-shot project!
