Rennala's one of the sadder bits of the game, really. She's not even hollow: Just so utterly out of it that she doesn't seem to grasp any of what's actually going on around her anymore. And despite that, she's still quite nice to us.

Especially since it seems that she was a pretty competent and powerful leader by the time the Golden Order invaded Liurnia.

Rennala's definitely in a tragic situation, though her behavior certainly isn't nice. She seems to actually direct the "sweetings", so she's having them attack the Tarnished so she can experiment on them to have another "sweeting." Additionally, she actively casts a spell that kills some students and turns them into tombstones, then makes a sweeping gesture to launch them at the Tarnished. Rennala's got enough of herself together to choose to be a threat, even if her mental state later shifts to being more of a trap than an attacker with the Larval Tear service that would otherwise be dangerous to the Tarnished if they, as the "patient", didn't have the Great Rune of the Unborn. We can observe the Larval Tear "rebirth" ruining Boc, so despite how traumatized and dysfunctional Rennala has become, she is by no means harmless.

@@nightscout9979 True. But I'm willing to say she really doesn't do harm intentionally. The juvenile scholars? They just get reborn, and even they treat it as a game. Rennala also seems to be entirely unaware that said scholars don't respawn after her fight, or even that we took the greatrune of rebirth from her. The Boc thing? She clearly took a request from him, and seemingly did exactly as asked of her. And, to boot, she's happy to do our hair, restat us, and even seemingly lets Sellen shove her into a corner. Rennala is basically divorced from her surroundings, near as I can tell; Doesn't even seem to be aware that we just had a fight with her, or Ranni's phantom. Just politely asks if we'd like to be reborn, and otherwise cradles her egg.

@@Umbra_Ursus The "sweetings" get worse and worse with each "rebirth", but Rennala doesn't face that and instead drags more people into the messed-up situation. Even if she can rebirth them, that one spell of hers actively kills them, which is messed up to do to her patients, pupils, children, etc. in general. Rennala's mental state changes a bit after the fight as I noted, hence her thinking the "sweetings" are hiding when she can't manifest them the same way, but she still does the harmful procedures to people who clearly have other expectations, hence what befalls Boc. Rennala's all sorts of messed up and certainly not meshing well with her surroundings, but she is meshing just well enough to select the path of being dangerous to those around her. Rennala even gestures like the killed "sweetings" during that spell mentioned in the first reply, then waves her hand while casting a transmutating spell before finally giving a gesture to launch them. She very much is aware of what's happening with that move.

@@nightscout9979 Hmm. Point taken. At least in regards to the scholars, she's knowingly "recycling" them for an attack. Though it's probably still viewed as a game, all-round: Funny thing I've noticed through my fights with her? The juvenile scholars have a habit of dropping chandeliers on each other. And going off the cut voices, they start to interpret the fight as a big play fight, of sorts. Outright, they want to be friends with us... Which really does make the lack of respawn, post-fight, that much worse. Worth noting: The cut voices for them also show them bringing up the tombstone thing: "If we're turned to stone, will we be born again? Will mother hold us again? Will we? Will she?".

That shot at 1:36 is one of the most beautiful you've captured. A bath of moonlight. Also the Erdtree standing alone in the misty blue night sky is stunning. Really beautiful and interesting video. There's an area in stormveil that might be interesting. It's behind and to the left of the room in which you first encounter nepheli loux standing over the body of a banished knight. The area is out of bounds, as far as I can tell. The architecture of the buildings, from what's visible, is similar to the earliest strata of leyndell. If so, it could be representative of stormveil before it was encastled and worth a look. Love the vids.

Thanks for this detailed analysis of Rennala's Phase 2 arena! It's interesting how it's hidden under Liurnia rather than being in a different dimension like the Roundtable Hold is. I wonder how close the Phase 2 arena comes to the ceiling of Nokstella and the Lake of Rot. Also, it's awesome how you got the moon and stars to appear in the overworld! It's certainly a gorgeous sight, though I think it wasn't one the Lands Between normally saw. IMO, Ranni is taking a liberty to emphasize her mother's greatness, as well as the view of the bright moon seen to the north from the Moonlight Altar. Curiously, said northern moon is actually a 3D model and can be reached, and I think the same is true for the Dark Moon in the Age of Stars ending as well, or at least its LOD model. I wonder if that's also the case for the additional Erdtrees and orange nebula in the Elden Beast's arena. Maybe the sun in Farum Azula and Enir-Ilim's skyboxes can actually be reached too. Come to think of it, if someone hovered across the sky out of bounds, at what distance would things like the Moonlight Altar northern moon, Enir-Ilim's sun, etc. disappear, and would they fade out or immediately vanish? I recall spotting the normal sun from a lower section of Enir-Ilim (not Belurat) before, so perhaps there's a range where both suns can be seen at once. Also, since you were able to mod the Phase 2 moon into the Lands Between's sky, what would the Moonlight Altar look like with this moon visible? It'd be cool to observe the three depictions of the moons simultaneously. Lorewise, I'm not sure if the Phase 2 Rennala is weaker than the real Rennala at her peak. The construct Rennala is apparently so accurate to actual Rennala that the resulting Remembrance is said to be that of Rennala herself, with no mention of the construct in any item descriptions. Ranni's dual guardian and loving depiction of her mother is fabulously well-made even within the context of the setting itself. As for the cradle in the last shot of the cutscene, that might be used as a reference point for positioning the camera to get the profile shot. Thanks again for this video!

Seeing Rennala from other angles... is she paralyzed? She doesn't seem to use her legs when crawling or really any time in phase 1 which is the only time we see her true body. I think she's got more going on than a broken heart. Wouldn't be the first time the golden order fed us a line.

While possible, if one is very, very demoralised and deeply lost in sorrow the strenght to use ones legs can just not be found. She might simply be too discouraged to muster up the required strenght to even stand. Especially considering Rennalla has been alone with her rebirth juvennile scholars for who knows how long. Solitude does the mind bad, especially if we are talking solitude combined with deep anguish and extreme sorrow. Not to mention how long has she been levitated in the sleep bubble? Muscles athrophy if not used, so that means she might have very weak legs currently due to not using them for who knows how long. Combined with the point about not having the will to use them, not that surprising.
