This "modern audience" never existed. I've seen devs saying the days of the "straight white man" being the main audience are over but .... they aren't. I'm a woman, i've been gaming since I was tiny, my brother got me into it. While the number of female gamers has grown over the years we're still only a tiny fraction of the gaming population. Male gamers will always, always, always be the main audience devs SHOULD be aiming for. The thing is, the "eye candy" these idiot journo's complain about is what a lot of us women want to see too. I don't want to be playing ugly characters. Most of my single player games are modded up to my characters as pretty as possible, usually wearing very little. If I ever found myself looking at a game like Dustborn or Concord and thinking "they look great" then i'd know it was nearing my time to kick the bucket because obviously my mind would be gone.

Concord is crap because it was made for game urinalists and noone else. - It is slow paced, around half the speed of a regular shooter game, so that it is easier for the urinalist to play - After winning with a certain character, that character is locked from play for the rest of the match, allowing for losing urinalists to have a fighting chance - The game has all the DEI content, from stereotypical characters to pronouns, that suits the urinalist's worldview - While everyone has to fork over cash to play, urinalists that are favourable to the developers are invited in, giving them a sense of self-importance. From this perspective, it isn't surprising at all that urinalists review games like Concord so highly. It is the same concept as Oscar-baiting movies that are boring for general audiences.

Many companies believe that they are playing the long game. They believe that in a few years from now, women and the lgbtq crowd will make up a good portion of their audience. So, they must cater to them right now to get them and keep them as customers ( and make lots of money ). However, the original fans, who make up the majority of their audience NOW and are problematic for them, they hope will die off and be replaced by this modern audience. Thinking they will be able to bring in a huge new female or gay audience is absurd because not many female or gay people are interested in those genres no matter how woke they are. The "I worked hard so you should pay me for my efforts" is an interesting take. I studied music in college but now work as a software developer. I saw this entitlement attitude amongst many classical and jazz musicians. The reality is that the market for both classical and jazz music is very slim. Only the absolute best, most talented, most gifted ever make a career in it. Yet, I found myself the villain when I pointed out the reality that nobody owes you an income, no matter how many hours a day you practice violin. I'm glad I'm out of that period of my life.

The modern audience, several thousands if not 10s of thousands, has already seen everything the game has to offer on release day. What people keep forgetting is that there were dozens, nearly all the concurrent players tracked, streaming the game in it's entirety for several hours. When a game is extremely linear and almost entirely scripted dialogue with little required player input a single watch through is all anyone will ever need. So the modern audience may actually exist, they just aren't willing to spend their own money to support the garbage they claim they want. After all they have their reasons they can't buy the game themselves (insert preferred victim card reason).

These people want to be like Picasso or Van Gogh, someone who defines a generation of art. Each of these studios or dev teams pump out these social justice games that are supposedly reflective of the times in hope to get lightning in a bottle and be THE GAME THAT CHANGED THE INDUSTRY. But they don't break the model of low tier trash and the games always feel clunky even if you ignore the story. Systems are half thought out and most of the interviews are centered on the message and not what makes gameplay fun. But as long as they claim its for modern audiences they can argue that they are the forefront of change and that they are the "next step in art" even if they don't mean to claim the title.

The problem is multifolded. The biggest one being, some people have made it easy for developers to ignore their feedback and criticism because of how hard both trolls and defenders of some games go. Another is the fact that most "modern games" and gamers don't know what they want.
