Great report Niall and so good to see Charlie again , wondering if he’ll sail again since 11th Hour Racing boat is gone; excitingly just read about the New York Vendée Race (May 29 in Manhattan) where 31 IMOCAs will race / parade before departing for France; lamented not making it to Freeport, RI the last two Ocean Races so this time is not to be missed; hello Malizia! Holcim PRB, CHARAL! and pretty DUBREIL (formerly 11th Hour😊) with their courageous solo skippers …cool reason to visit the big Apple

The advances in speed and distance really are very dramatic, last year I read Peter Blake’s book about the 1981-82 race with logbook entries recording every day’s run and doing a 300-mile day was considered INCREDIBLE for Ceramco and only possible in the Southern Ocean. I think everyone will always have their greatest affection for the route from the first edition they followed, so for me that’s 2017-18 and it still looks pretty close to perfection, but I know the dip from Australia up to China had issues because it was such a high-traffic region, there was a piracy threat, and Hong Kong harbor was so busy that Vestas had their accident. So I’d say my ideal would be roughly the 2017-18 route but with Cape Verde added, and the Pacific leg being straight from Australia to NZ and then across the Pacific. (Really we just need to get AU/NZ back!) But there is always room for change and improvement, another stop in India like in 2008 would be interesting. It seems like the Itajai-Newport leg always takes the boats pretty close to Bermuda, so maybe break that leg up with a stopover there? There’s just always so many possibilities! I like the follow-up interview with Charlie, it’s nice to see what life is actually like between the races for the sailors.

Thanks for your comment Zoe, there's still lots to be decided. It was interesting to hear from Charlie - a lot of the sailors report the 'post-race blues' when they shift back to normal life again!

@@TheOceanRace I can’t even imagine, I know Charlie talks about it a little here, but the change from being in that highly specialized environment back to normal life ashore… it must be like two different worlds.

Pretty cool and informative preview. Really looking forward to the next editions in 25 and 27. Will be again in one of the host cities 😎 Question ... I'm asking myself which boat Niall is sailing at the beginning and end of the video. Thought that I know most of those performance boats at this size ... but: no idea 🤔

Would be nice! As you can see in the video, the Race route is always a fine balance between practicality, weather and seasons, time and commercial considerations. We never say never though!

Now listen to me... The golden days of The Ocean Race were the days of OR and IOR boats, and the race main sponsor was Whitbread. We need to change direction, because the race has become the playground to only few very professional teams. We should incorporate model from Sidney to Hobart and Fastnet races where Yacht owners can attend and where super maxis compete for the line of honors. No leg points, but total time like in the good old days. No show sailing but only good old ocean racing with legs of thousands of miles. Make it traditional again and allow many to participate. Make it one of the great again.
