In Episode 23 of Car Chats, we discuss common mistakes that people make in their LGBTQ allyship journey. We unpack tokenism, workplace considerations, elevating sexuality/gender, and directly questioning an LGBTQ person about their identity.

I really like how you express appreciation for the efforts people make in understanding and treating LGBT+ People (or anyone, for that matter) with kindness and respect. Thank you as always for posting this.

It is hilarious and brilliant that y'all are so dedicated to the "car" of "car chats" that you're staying in the boiling car through a Michigan summer. Can't wait for August! Speaking of allyship, do you have a patreon or venmo or some other way we can pay you for all this good work you do?

You are so kind, Jacqueline! We did mention in this video that LGBTQ people should be compensated for their work, but we have chosen to create these videos because it’s something we care deeply about and don’t feel a need to be compensated for! If you feel motivated to give to LGBTQ advocacy/education work, we’d recommend The Trevor Project or The HRC. Appreciate you! (:

I'm openly ace and the burden of education can be exausting! I understand why people have questions as meeting an ace person is rare; however, it makes me uncomfortable feeling like I am expected to represent the whole community

Another amazing video! While I totally agree that it's inappropriate to ask someone about their gender identity, I'm wondering if there's an approach to asking new acquaintances about preferred pronouns. Any advice on this topic?

Hey, Delaine! This is a great question and we probably don’t have a perfect answer. Something we’ve thought about doing is when introducing ourselves saying “I use she/her pronouns” and asking a question like “if you’re comfortable sharing, what are your pronouns?” Here’s an article we recently read and found helpful: www.npr.org/2021/06/02/996319297/gender-identity-pronouns-expression-guide-lgbtq
