Just about every Newfie I've ever known was this "stereotype". The ones that didn't have the accent reverted back to their Newfie slang as soon as you put a few drinks in them.

They always call this a Newfie accent, but really, it's Acadian. People in Gaspé use a lot of the same phrases and sound similar. Not sure about NB and PEI but there are places outside newfoundland where this accent is common!

No, while we do have some French influence in NL the majority of our accent derives from southeast Ireland and the west country of England.

It's not just a stereotype. There are dozens of accents across Newfoundland and Labrador. People who try to lose their accents boggle my mind. Why would anyone from Atlantic Canada (or anywhere else for that matter) want to sound like someone from Toronto? Have some bloody pride.

True, the accents in NL can change form town to town. Even the sayings can be different - in some parts of NL they call the day before xmas eve "Tibbs Eve" and in other parts it's called "Tipsy Eve", for example. Bonavista Bay has what I would consider to be the "stereotypical" Newfie accent. I wish I could find an example of a French Newfie accent - unfortunately the few people who still have one are 70+ years old. St John's always had a milder accent, and most of the younger generation in St John's have a general Canadian accent now.

Shaun came from an outport so I don't doubt he came up with most of the writing in this sketch. My missus comes from the southern shore and she was about 85% fluent on this one lol. I've just about had time to memorize the whole sketch which BTW is brilliant.

The reason why the actual NL curling team doesn't have an accent is that most of them aren't actually from NL, and Brad Gushue himself is from St Johns where people have either a mild accent or none at all. That being said, "Byrne" (Shaun Majumder) talks just like my father! LOL

BYour accent is determined by where you grew up and also if your ancestors were Irish or English. In St.Johns accents were also affected by which part of town you came from. Thus many people from “away” may not consider the normal question “ Where are you from” as an introductory conversation beginning.Some CFA’s are even offended by what they think is too personal or bigoted a query.
@dinkster1729
@dinkster1729 Ай бұрын
Yes, I"ve noticed that people in Ontario who are newcomers to the country are really offended by questions about where they are from. Some are proud of it and want to show you their cuture and way of life. It depends. They really don't like it if you detect an accent or a different way of seeing things.

A lot of Newfoundlanders, for some reason, love the stereotype language. I grew up in St. John's and this sort of language didn't exist. However, we seem to like using it in front of mainlanders for some reason which escapes me. Every mainlander believes we all talk this way.
