According to Wikipedia, aboriginal people make up 15.7% of the population of Coonabarabran. I wonder why they haven’t contacted the AHRC to have the racist name of their town to something less offensive like, New London?

Apparently, the name of the town Coonabarabran is from an aboriginal language. Should every word in the world that contains the sound Koon be purged ? Cacoon. Tycoon. Kowloon sounds kinda like Koon. Cartoon, Continuous, Concentrate and Concatenate are close. Are we giving up cones and scones ? Perhaps raccoons should be renamed.

I live in Pasadena California, where Trader Joe's first opened for business. I love TJ's, their products are wonderful and reasonably priced in my opinion. There's definitely a "fun and inclusive" feel to the stores layout and themes, it strikes me a very liberal sort of operation. I thought whole petition deal was rather ironic given that their customer base, at least in the stores I visit (Southern California is very liberal/progressive) is filled with your typical highly educated and eccentric/artsy types. You can probably imagine how thoroughly ecstatic I was when they announced that they would not be kowtowing.

I've been eating Coon Cheese since I was 10, maybe younger. It's one of my favorite cheeses. I'm now 31, and shortly after the name change was announced I went out and bought one final block of Coon. I had forgotten how good it was, but I cannot and will not buy it again. We live in a society now where people want to be offended by something and it makes me sick. I just hope Golden Gaytime have the balls to stand up to these snowflakes.

I got into short strife (thankfully in Australia) when I objected against a small area being called the "The Crapper". I said (Bathroom/Toilet) would be more appropriate. I was advised that Mr Crapper had invented the flush toilet system that almost everyone uses. I folded up like a girl against the logic. One man's offense is another man's comedy. Until violent riots break out over in America. We've all heard the shocking jokes using coon cheese's American connotation, but here in Australia I could walk into any Indigenous man's home and whether his cheese was "Coon" or "Bega" he wouldn't care. Cheese is cheese. Again, we're letting less than 1% of the population's outrage dictate the way in which the rest of us live. I posit this; In Australian slang the term "flog" is used to describe an individual who is being pretentious, conceitious or downright foolish. In recent memory the term "flog" was used by AFL fans to describe Adam Goodes, an Indigenous footballer who's face became synonymous with letting every little thing around him offend him, going so far as to claim such innocuous attacks as "racist." There were incidents where Goodes' was harassed with a clear racial motive and everyone in Australia supported him in calling out such abhorrent behaviour. However; Goodes' career ended in flames as he, a public figure, could no longer accept the ridicule of the people. My question is; How long until we start being dragged away by the court of public opinion for using the word flog. Or any other word for that matter when it is used to criticize an individual who's ethnicity is not white. If a bogan screams "coon" in the woods and there are no snowflakes around to be offended by it, is the word actually offensive?

It's been an ongoing joke and i brag about em with my American friends how they have survived.. always good fun to drop in a "man these Chico babies are chewy today nom nom nom" on unsuspecting ears.. but the f'ers have gotten them too :( Nearly all aussies don't even know the reference and you'll be hard pressed findinb a real life Chico baby in Australia and they won't care. I personally never really liked Coon Cheese, I don't like "Tasty" cheese that much. I much prefer something milder, like Jarlsberg. But I know now, I'll not be buying the Coon replacement ever again, on the odd occasion I need a type of cheese they make.
