When the bite is decidedly off, river smallmouth tend to move to areas where they can conserve energy. That usually means that they are in shallow, non turbulent water where the current moves straight across a flat bottom substrate.

I love areas like that. Many will pass it up as dead water, when in reality there are fish cruising or hanging out and will not pass up a food opportunity that comes thru their area. A nice jig and craw raced along the bottom that looks like a escaping crayfish can trigger good bites.

It takes fan casting to figure out that they have moved to laminar flow areas. It’s not the kind of spot that most experienced river anglers start with, but once you know that’s where they are, it gets easier to target them.

It's been getting easier these last few years for me to default to "What CAN I do to be successful today?" instead of "I can't do this/this isn't going to work." There is usually something that WILL work today, even if it is just grinding, and you'll never meet that success unless you look at the larger picture and cycle through different attempts. But at the same time, some people just don't want to fish when it is difficult and I can understand that since we all have limited time. Some more so than others.

I feel like I dig in harder when the bite is tough. The challenge is such a critical reason why I go.

More great tips! I got around to trying the quad spinning hook on my whopper plopper, and for the first hour, i was getting strikes but could not hook up, it took me a while to figure out what to do, i switched to a smaller plopper and widened the gap of all four points, then the magic happened, i started boating most of my bites, including two over 19 inches, then i hooked into a monster that just crushed it, had it hooked good, but it somehow got off near the boat. Oh well, still gonna lose some. Well after that i got into a good spot, they were just crushing it, but i started missing them all! After a half hour of frustration, i thought to check the hook. It was gone! That huge one that got away, didnt come un hooked, it completely broke the hook off! So i was fishing without hooks for quite awhile 😮😂

Was the split ring still there? Did the hooks swivel fail? What did that look like?
@Paddle-N-Fish
@Paddle-N-Fish Жыл бұрын
@TheLittleStuff yes, the split ring was fine, and the upper part of the hook I think. I sent you a friend request on Facebook, I can share the photo with you there, or if you prefer, I can show you it a different way?

how do you get your anchor wizard to hold in that current
@TheLittleStuff
@TheLittleStuff Жыл бұрын
Inflatable kayaks require less force to hold because they sit on top of the water instead of down in it. That being said, I only anchored in a few places. I used the Torqeedo Ultralight with foot control steering to hold position OUTSIDE of the eddy while casting into it.

Great video Jeff. You make some terrific points about attitude. I don't know how many days that I've struggled all day, and figured things out in the last two hours to make my long trip a successful one, rather than a dud. "Excuses protect your ego, but defeat you as an angler", so very true. Nice work again. Tips about lures and techniques don't do much if you don't maintain a positive outlook out there, and instead of banging your head against the wall. try and figure out what is really happening and adapt.

The only time I get frustrated, is when I find them and even see them and throw everything at them and they won’t eat! There is a spot that I go to all the time and sneak up from behind stay far away so not too spook and they won’t touch anything?? Great stuff Jeff! Can’t wait for the next episode!
