To me this is a representation of leaving childhood behind in order to enter the teen years. And it is so sad to realise this is an example of how we grow up thinking we someday can come back to our chilhood, but actually can't.

EXACTLY! My wife asked me what I thought after we watched it and I said this is the best movie I have seen in a long time. His world doesn't work anymore and he figures it out, it's because he is growing up and has to leave it behind and Carol knows (part of his subconscious) that he wont be back. I felt the same way as Carol id when my daughter looked at me one day after making her stuffed animals talk and said "dada, I know it's you making the animals talk" she wrecked my world and I was Carol

The way Carol covers his face and cries after realizing he messed up his relationship with Max, someone he loves... it hits right in the feels. RIP James Gandolfini 🖤

"Don't go, we'll eat you up, I love you so." I love this line to death. Not only does it dead-ass reference the book, but it also fits the solemn spirit of the scene! I love this movie more than anything! :)

Not only is it symbolic about leaving innocence of childhood behind but its also realizing you can’t fix everything in the world or keep everyone happy in your life, people will always change and try to find their own way. Max and his dad. TW trying to leave the wild things, carol not accepting it. Wild things wanting Max to treat them all equally and make them all ok. but he can’t and it goes with people, although he can still love them, he can never be responsible to fix or prevent everything that changes in life.

This scene always makes me think of the book . When max leaves the island he wanted to go home and wanted to be where someone loved him best of all . And in the movie it makes me sad that max has to leave childhood behind and grow up . But I know deep down max will one Day come back and give carol a big hug and tell him I’m sorry but I love you

I agree with you. Still, Where The Wild Things Are deserves a sequel someday. If there's a sequel someday, I do imagine that Max will be a teenager or may still look the same, he could tell his family about the Wild Things & maybe go on the same boat that took him to the island of the Wild Things & see the Wild Things again for the second time. And they could do a Wild Rumpus, sleep in a big pile inside the fortress & maybe Max could tell the Wild Things about his family, including his homeland & also go on amazing adventures with Carol & the other Wild Things, so that way Carol & Max's bond & friendship will become stronger. Max could be like a son-figure to Carol & Carol could be like a father-figure to Max as well, because Max needs a father-figure in his life.

Bro I watched this on Netflix and I barely watched it because I was cooking. But I was catching glimpses of it but then when carol saw that heart in the hut, then him running to see max triggered something in me idk but I literally started weeping. I watched this movie when I was a kid when it came out, but forgot all about it, I guess something triggered me to feel the same emotion I did once before when I watched it the first time. Crazy. And I’m 20 years old lmao crazy crazy..

People say it’s him leaving his childhood. But, why. Honestly, why does it have to end, the exploration and fun of being a kid. We are always so eager to grow up to be mature and older like the rest of the world, all just to fit in. But why do we do this to ourselves? We leave behind everything that made us unique to be just another extra. What’s wrong with being just a little bit childish? We leave behind our childlike wonder to be boring. Have you ever been made fun of just for being a little bit childish? And after all, your expected to be boring like the rest of the world, and then you grow old, have weight gain, disfunction in the body. So enjoy being a kid for as long as you can, cause your only a kid for so long. So who cares what people say cause all you need, is your imagination. It’s sad because, when your a kid, grown ups want you to talk to them about everything, but somethings they just won’t understand. It’s hard finding someone who actually gets you. Carol found someone who gets him, max. He thought you know, he would fix everything, he found a friend. When max said, he’s just max he’s basically dashing they weren’t gonna be friends anymore. Carols world was falling apart, the other wild things didn’t understand him. Carol himself was falling apart. Once Max stopped imagining, he would be gone cause he was apart of Max’s imagination. Max was getting older, so his imagination was fading. He knew he couldn’t go back after. He didn’t have to do this, because he didn’t want to except that he would have to go back home, where no one understood him. But was he really loved there at the island? no. They understood what he was thinking but, they wanted him to solve their problems, he didn’t have anyone to understand his problems. So he left. He couldn’t do it all by himself. He also needed someone. His mom. See, I think after he went back to his mom, she would understand him more and what he was feeling. She knew that he felt neglected. He wanted to be treated as his own person. All he needed, was someone to be there for him. He didn’t care if she didn’t understood everything, he just wanted someone to be there for him. So he left. Even in your imagination, you can’t escape the harsh reality.
