Hey, there's a new Explosions&Fire video: • Nitrotetrazoles - Expl...
Ok this is an old reuploaded video sorry, i'm really behind on the editing. I mentioned it in a previous video here, assuming it was on this channel. It wasn't and was actually on Explosions&fire (for some reason?) so was lost when that channel went and got itself deleted.
Yes, the sulfuric acid is really expensive. Wait until you hear the price of alcohol here! It's honestly amazing we're all pissheads given that it's like the developed world's most expensive alcohol. Oh well, that's the reality of Australia really.

You can make H2SO4 by double displacement b/w oxalic acid and magnesium sulphate or copper sulphate This is possible due to the relative insolubility of magnesium oxalate or copper oxalate. Neat trick to get H2SO4 if it isn't available in your country

I did that, and let me tell you, separating the copper oxalate precipitate is DAMN-NEAR impossible. I kept trying to filter it via vacuum/ via coffee filter, and no-matter what I did it just kept on coming through the filter paper all blue and cloudy. I decided upon just distilling off the liquid instead, leaving all the blue precipitate at the bottom of the round flask, which was a PAIN to clean off after. Let's just say it wasn't fun. But hey, the sulfuric acid is pretty pure!

Sulfamic acid is pretty widely available from hardware stores -- used for cleaning ceramic stovetops and lime-scale deposits. Tartaric acid can often be found in supermarkats although potassium bitartrate is far more common. Useful if you are ever getting into chiral molecules. There are products out there that contain ammonium bifluoride if you really need to get into fluorine chemistry. I don't.

Can't really think of a use for HCOOH outside of really specialized syntheses, but it should be fairly straightforward to synthesize from oxalic acid and glycerol: Glycerol + Oxalic acid ---> Glycerol monooxalate + H2O Glycerol monooxalate ---> Glycerol monoformate + CO2 Glycerol monoformate + H2O --- Cat. H+ ---> Glycerol + Formic acid Reportedly runs at 100-110C, with the HCOOH being distilled off (not sure about the concentration, but probably 30-50%wt). I imagine that a decent amount of HCOOH decomposes at those temperatures too, so something to be aware of (CO+H2O if too dry, CO2+H2 otherwise).

When you need HNO3, try looking for it in places where they sell boiler stations and related products because azeotropic nitric acid is actually used as limescale remover for aluminum pipes and tanks (as pretty much any other acid would also remove the aluminum metal). Here they do sell it under the tradename NITRICAL and it is available to general public. 85% formic acid is sold for bees treatments, and they likely have pure acetic acid too. Fosforic acid 85% can sometimes be found as "food grade fosforic acid.”

98% sulphuric acid drain cleaner? that sounds like a disaster waiting to happen for most consumers, if they don't have enough water in the drain, it's going to melt the PVC pipe, the enthalpy of solvation is crazy high, I get boiling when I add 98% to less than twice it's volume of water and I can't hold any test tube I put it in.

that's....why it's sold to professionals mainly? plumbers basically buy pure or very clean acid and they have "kits" for different pipes those "kits" are substances to protect the pipes, different pipe materials have different inhibitors it's not usually sold to particulars, but professionals, it's more convenient

Wow. In the US we buy clear 31.45% HCl at the hardware store. Concentrated sulfuric, glacial acetic, phosphoric, and nitric acids are all available via a biodiesel company. Its usually about $12 US per liter except for nitric which runs about $90 US per liter. Na and K OH are pure and very cheap. PS I just bought 2 L of 98% sulfuric acid for $24 US. Here it's getting cheaper. That's so weird. It's the same stuff. PPS I love your channel. Good stuff. Subscribed. 😀

From what I've researched (I had similar problems to you) some battery vendors do in fact sell sulfuric acid... but they require you buy a battery from them too, which makes it kind of costly. As far as the drain cleaners go, I didn't know Stratco or Mitre 10 might stock them. I'll have to check it out, as that is the whole reason I wanted some.

OK, let me guess, the most available acid is ethanoic (acetic) acid, followed by hydrochloric acid, and the most unavailable is... nitric acid! Well, or picric acid if you count that. EDIT: wow, I didn’t know sulfuric acid was so difficult to get in Australia. Over here we can go to the hardware store and pick up 25 litres of 30% sulfuric acid for pH adjustment in pools for quite cheap, and I found it on Amazon as drain cleaner, 98% and like 16 € shipped for a 1 litre bottle, but if you buy 6, it’s only about 10 € per litre. And I didn’t think about HF... unfortunately, I need it for my project of making transistors.

Get your hands on some sulfur and make your own it's not hard in fact it's very easy. You can use Garden sulfur they should not make too much of a difference. So if your apparatus for your first section is calcium chloride dryer your second section is no iron oxide heated as it continues to go through into a container of water and then into another container of water. You leave vacuum to continuously draw the fumes. The very beginning of the apparatus will where you will start your sulfur fire before it gets sucked in through the calcium chloride and then the iron oxide which is being heated. This convert S02 to S03 then it hits the water 🤗

hexamethylene triperoxide diamine. it can be synthesized from really commonly available chemicals, so it has a reputation as basically being a terrorist explosive. i think tom doesn't want to synthesize it because it's notoriously unstable and if you make it then the only thing you'll be blowing up is yourself.

Whoa man, that's ridiculous! You need to pay more than 40 dollars just for a liter of dirty colored sulphuric acid? I can't even imagine something like that... I live in Czech Republic and I can get a 1 liter of 96% sulphuric acid (of the highest purity they say) straight from a chemical store for something like 125kč - that's something about 5-6 dollars! Only if I could send you several bottles as a gift... It's ridiculous how it's easy to get pure and cheap chemicals here compared to Australia.
