The question isn't JUST where to buy CDs, but how to get even better bit-depth/sampling-rate CDs. The current generation presents the music with the same 16-bit/44.1KHz that the original music CD was offered back in 1982. I won't get into the issues of converting old analog/lower bit-depth digital recordings, but most modern recordings are recorded at least at 24-bits/192KHz, if not 32-bit/384KHz. The far higher dynamic range and detail of these higher formats are quite noticeable. Even 20-bit HDCDs were very noticeably better, back in the day. FWIW, the dynamic range of regular CDs is about 96dB, whereas the dynamic range of HDCDs and SACDs is about 120dB, the commonly recognized limit of human hearing. The recorded "detail/resolution" (e.g. harmonics that give most music added "richness/reality") of the higher bit-depth/sampling rate recording formats are also noticeable. Additionally, when music is released on these higher quality formats, they are generally mastered to a higher standard, thus further improving the music. Maybe, these days, the only way we can get access to these higher quality recording is through digital purchases (at a higher cost, though it doesn't really cost more). I don't know. But what I do know is we need higher quality music if this hobby is to continue. Something that will help people HEAR the differences. Then again, if all you do is listen to music on your phone or in your car, then you are REALLY missing out on how good well-performed, well-recorded, and well-mastered music can sound. And if you think your CD players sound good now, just wait until you get into player modding! I remember that my old Toshiba 3109 dual disc, HDCD-capable CD player (now available on eBay for around $50) had clock and/or capacitor mods that really made it into a player that could compete with players that cost hundreds of dollars more. I don't see why modern players couldn't benefit from the same "old school" modding. You know the saying, "what's old is new again"... My $.02... PS. If you want some good Celtic or blues CD recordings, then check out Mary Black ("No Frontiers" or "Looking Back") and "Mighty" Sam McClain ("Blues for the Soul" or "Give it Up for Love"), respectively. They are among the best CD recordings I've heard outside of classical music.

Just a good, dedicated CD player makes a noticeable difference. Most people play their CD's on a DVD/Blu Ray player. Unless you splurge for a really nice DVD/BR player, the transports are made pretty cheaply and the laser lenses are not as good quality. Build quality on a dedicated CD player is much better. I would even say you don't need an off-board DAC if you have a nice amp. I have a slightly older Yamaha CD-S300. It sounds great! It replacement - the CD-S303 is about $375. Worth it if you are really into CD's.

The CD is small and durable. Compact discs can be played on machines made by a variety of companies. Unfortunately, cars and computers are no longer manufactured with compact disc players. Hopefully the excitement that you bring with your videos will help to bring the general public's attention to the benefits of the compact disc format. The quality of some of my old cds is incredible....pj harvey, bjork,pearl jam....and on and on. I wanted kendrick lamars new album on vinyl but opted for CD as it retailed fir 50 euro....cd 12 euro. My other favorite thing about thrift shops is they’re a great way to get the case, booklet, and artwork for some CDs I have where I only have the disc. Early on in my hi-fi journey I got a pair of Sony 400 disc CD changers so I foolishly got rid of the artwork for all my CDs. My best format to listen is records but I only buy the one I really want and have to be from master tapes. But I also buy cd’s. Not all cds sound good. The funny thing is that people say a good sounding cd sound analog with a DAC. All I can say is to get what is make you enjoy the music!

To answer this question, go to used records stores, thrift stores, and maybe flea markets to look for CDs. Maybe once I move out of the sticks, I'll buy me some CDs, and I'll probably have to buy an old discman from eBay.

Lately, I been buying used CDs at Saver's - a chain of thrift stores in my area. The discs don't have to be "mint." I just want them to play. Usually, if the CD looks badly scratched and scraped, I'll avoid that one.

I've been buying huge amounts of cds lately. Lots of them ordered from a local place, driving to the big city got me a stack of used ones at a hole in the wall store. Goodwill stores here mostly have exactly the same thing at every store, though always worth checking as I did just find 4 like new Pat Metheny cds at a Goodwill recently.

I only predominantly like metal. I already own about 500 cd's/250 vinyl records. I can't imagine buying any more. There's too much music. I have pretty much all of the best rock/ metal albums of all time. If I bought any more, I fear it will become an unhealthy addiction. But I am looking for the Thin Lizzy "rock legends" box set. The only way for me to get this is buying on eBay for 200 bucks. That is pretty much the only way I can get out of print cd's.

My town doesn't have a Barnes and noble or fye anymore they both closed we also don't have any local record stores so I have to buy all my cd's online or at target or goodwill which kinda sucks cause it makes it really hard to shop for CDs and alot of times Amazon cds the cases come in damaged or cracked which makes it an inconvenience to purchase cd's online so it's really frustrating right now but I do find a couple CDs at the family dollar and dollar general stores in my town

I am hoping once they realize there is still interest in physical media. Right now companies are scared to take the leap of faith because stocking inventory is a huge cost and right now the interest is barely starting to return from its hiatus. I say give it a couple years and you will start seeing hybrid record shops inside of malls, ones that sell a variety of things that are popular and have a section for CDs and Records. I think that's where it will start and it will probably go from there.

@mimofi

You cannot comment on the difference in sound and assume it is the SHMCD effect, especially for a Japan release. I have had Japan releases on the same CD format as a non Japan release and it sounded different and often way better. I bet if you find a regular CD Japan issue of the same SHMCD Japan issue (ie same year, same album) the difference will be zero. This is true with SACD as well, ie the only bulletproof way to compare an SACD to CD sound is a hybrid SACD that has a redbook CD layer as you are sure it's the same mastering. As well, SHMCD vs SACD is not really another format, ie SHMCD is redbook CD. Another example is XRCD or HDCD or 2K etc. These do also sound better than the regular CD issue as remastered and encoded better. I own a few SHMCDs eg portraits in Jazz Bill Evans and We get requests Oscar Peterson and I also have these in SACD and K2HD CD and the best sounding of each is by FAR the K2HD because of the mastering and encoding. Generally an SACD or SHMCD or XRCD or K2HD etc will sound better the the standard mass issues redbook because of the mastering and encoding that is done with care and attention. In my experience the best sounding ones were the XRCD and 2KHD CDs. Note that even CDs I bought in the early times of CD and re purchase today sound way way better because these are often later issues that had been remastered etc. All that to say on its own SHMCD is not making any impact in my opinion, but Japan issues are always great sounding ( they are passionate about audio) and so do specialty releases (incl. SHMCD but also HDCD, XRCD, 2KDH CD etc and yes SACD regardless of your opinion on DSD because at a minimum the mastering and encoding done with much greater care than regular mass market issues of CDs. Hot topic, at least for me lol! Thanks for the video and tabling this topic 😊
