If you're going to cross Californian with New Zealand, I would recommend using a Californian doe with a New Zealand buck. Californians often produce more milk than New Zealands.
@Slightlyrednecked5 жыл бұрын
Nothing wrong with that plan. I have a California buck and New Zealand doe and it is working well but the other way around is a good plan too.

@Slightly Rednecked. Thank you for your calm demeanour and informative videos. I'm in South Africa and that was ExAcTlY what I wanted to ask you: where can I find good meat breeds in South Africa.(*;*) I've heard of Pendula... but it sounds like a cross breed specific to African continent; and I'd like to keep blood lines pure. New Zealand whites are extremely beautiful, so are the Rex breed. As far as I know both these breeds are both good for meat but their fur pelts preserve well to leather too? Is this true @Slightly Rednecked? God bless you and yours from South Africa.

Hi Chris, I'm in England and the only recommendations you made that we don't have here are Craigslist and arba. We also have Preloved and gumtree, hope that helps someone. Edited to add there's also Facebook groups such as nzw UK, and farming rabbits responsibly . You can get in contact with breeders in those groups. I dunno if you have them there but another good meat breed is beveren

Local feed stores can be a good resource to find rabbits. They know who's buying large amounts of rabbit feed. Some stores have bulletin boards. Slaughterhouses might be another source od information. People who sell rabbit meat to restaurants have to go to licensed slaughterhouses.

I breed and raise 8 different breeds of rabbits. I want to highly recommend the rabbit breed, Americans. Now they are rare and hard to find. But mine hit butcher weight and beyond by 9 weeks easy. I butchered one not long ago 10 weeks it was 6 lbs and alot of meat. But I do breed New Zealand and rex and many more that works good as well.

Thank you so much for the kind comments. There are so many different breeds of rabbits that make good meat rabbits. it really doesn't matter where you live. In fact, you should be more concerned living in the deep south than way up North in Canada. Rabbits do very well in cold climates and struggle in hot ones. You can't go wrong with standard New Zealand Whites or Californias. Silver Fox are also a good breed. I hope that helps.

How can you tell the age of a rabbit? I recently bought a California Red from a local farm store, full grown doe. She was on sale for $5 so it was hard to say no. Just curious if there is a good way to tell the age. Thanks
@Slightlyrednecked5 жыл бұрын
Unless it is a very young rabbit i don't know that there is a way to easily tell how old a rabbit is. You kind of just have to trust the person selling it to tell you the truth. On another note, I am not familiar with California Red rabbits. Are you sure it wasn't a New Zealand Red?

I know this is a video about rabbit's, but I have just gotten into quail for eggs. Mine are laying, my question is- after I wash my eggs there are tiny black specks everywhere. After they sit in the refrigerator or when frying them black specks. Is that normal? Does it hurt anything? Thanks
@Slightlyrednecked5 жыл бұрын
It sounds like parts of the egg (probably calcium deposits) flaking off. It doesn't hurt anything really. I would suggest a good pair of egg scissors to open them though, it will help with keeping all of that out of the egg when you are cooking it.

There is no reason you have to have more than just one doe. Unless you are just looking to produce more rabbits of course. I think it is probably wise to start off smaller. you can always add another doe later on if you want to.

I am so sorry to hear that. If you are sure you don't have any parasite problems (check for coccidiosis) then it could be caused by them being weened too early. I am afraid there are just too many things that can happen so it is hard for me to know for sure what the reason is.

@@whisperwhite2759 honestly any rabbit can be used as meat and any can be used as pet. It all depends on the breed that you have. If you don't know what breed is your pet rabbit or if it's a good meat rabbit just get a good doe and buck from somebody.
@craigslitzer48572 жыл бұрын
@@whisperwhite2759 In addition to what Rafael said, I would say it depends on what rabbits you have and what you're willing to invest. Ideal butchering weight is 5 lbs (2.2 kg?). If your rabbits reach 5 lbs, then you could likely use them as meat rabbits. But chances are it will cost more in the long term, because the smaller pet rabbits won't reach that weight until they are much older, and you will have to feed them for that entire time. Meat rabbit breeds tend to have an excellent "feed to meat" ratio, and they will reach harvest weight in just 12 weeks or so.
