Matt, Connie, and Goldie, thanks for hosting me the other day. Another great day of getting great information. After testing my friend's Minelab X-terra 305 on some gold pickers you had against your Fisher Gold Bug 2, we discovered that the 305 has only 18 kHz versus the Bug' s 71 kHz, and the 305 could not detect 1/8" size gold pickers so would not be considered a good gold finder. The 305 has a 9" circular coil, and when I contacted the factory to see if they had a smaller DD coil with higher kHz, the answer was no.

Just wish you could have stayed and worked with the GB a little more. To think that after all the hundreds of detectors that have come and gone through the years, that little analog thing is still on top in absolute detection of the smallest of gold targets (of course it will get a big one too but you will probably see that where you're going). Just so you've got it on print: if it breaks and none of the shops has another, the only thing that comes close is a Gold-Master (60+ kHz White's) using the smallest coil available. Good luck - we are very excited to hear about how you do - you have a good plan, and we both think you're going to score on nuggets in the pediment area. The only question my mind is size and whether you find any by eye (that was always the most exciting gold to find for me).

@@mattmattsongold would have loved to stay longer, but it was after 9 when I got to ktown and traffic was horrible. I realized that the almost 4 dwt of flakes I have is just not enough to test effectively. I'm going to test some of Glenda's jewelry to get a better test specimen.

Put that nickel on edge and detect it using normal and boost until you can do it in your sleep and you'll hit with no problems. The small signature of that nickel's edge will make you practice turning up the ground balance to slightly positive. The jewelry is good too. Got the package - thanks.

Matt, please clarify what you mean by "normal and boost." Are you referring to sensitivity or What? I'm also assuming I should practice on a buried nickel, not just surface detect?

Audio boost - the little switch I showed you. Yes on the nickel. Hammer some #8 birdshot flat - see if you can find it - a single link of a chain - etc. Get to know that thing really really well and it will pay off.

Matt Mattson In spite of my disabilities, I will be going back out west again this spring /summer in search of diamond deposits again. I've been plotting out locations all winter based on favorable geology to be checked as soon as I can afford to make the trip. I'm really excited because in my opinion I have some amazing areas that haven't been checked yet. I will be focusing mostly on lamproite and lamprophyre deposits with a few likely kimberlite deposits sprinkled in. I wish I could have met you when you were still most active in prospecting as you would definitely make a great fellow knowledgeable prospector on the subject. I love your work on gold and gem deposits because it gives me something to keep my mind busy watching the series many times over. I will be sure to tell you about what I find the same way I did last year. Take care and thank you again for sharing your wealth of knowledge with the world. I would probably have a heart attack if I found a godzilla nugget like you showed in this video but unfortunately I am unable to swing a detector... oh well.

Goldie is doing the most good, day 28 with no seizure. The CBD oil helped at first, but then the interval started coming down (to 11 days) - stopped that and started giving her yogurt, and the interval is now what it is. I do think the CBD oil rearranged her brain chemistry, just once a day was to much - we will keep up with the yogurt now, a lot easier to get down her than that oil!

Ahh - you're thinking outside the box! Years ago I did the same with the first version Garrett SeaHunter, another pulse induction beach hunter, and used it to great success underwater. Your selection will be just fine for what we're talking about here: big gold nuggets. The teeny tiny stuff requires specialization - and that's not what we're doing in this class (or this year after a major re-distribution of the gold fields) at all. Keep in mind, you may be driven crazy by iron chunks, or other objects - but if you hunt in the pediment and tops of tailings piles or dry washer header piles, you should be able to quickly check or simply throw things in a bucket (that's what I do) and take it all back to check later. Really, virtually anything will work, won't take much on a large piece of metal. Hope you have the best of luck out there!

Hey Matt love this info for it'll perhaps help me here on the east coast as well here in Virginia !!! The old timers here have sizable tailings piles so my question is if there were any tossed out nuggets by mistake into these tailings would they be perhaps not very deep in the piles or would they be towards the bottom of the piles for metal detecting purposes I know this is probably too vague of a question ? Any positive response would be helpful !!! I'll also from time to time ask other questions if ok with you !!!
@mattmattsongold
@mattmattsongold 6 жыл бұрын
Things are reversed on a tailings pile, the bottom of the river is the top of the pile, and is the richest. The bottom of the pile is the top overburden of the river bed they went through to get to the rich material. They stopped, either because they hit bedrock, or the pay layer paid out, or they were forced to stop by government gold confiscation in the 1930's (why most were stopped).

Matt, Some other experts, like Kevin Hoagland of GPAA, recommend digging EVERY target. They say that changing soil mineralization during the day, or what appears to the detector as a piece of nonferrous metal could be "hiding" the gold, meaning the gold and other heavy targets are often in the same areas. What is different about your counsel?
@mattmattsongold
@mattmattsongold 6 жыл бұрын
"What is different about your counsel?" Probably not much. You can't argue much with digging every target, that's the gold standard of metal detecting and I've left a lot of flakes and pickers in the ground to load pounds of the stuff in the truck.

There you go. I've been lucky enough to see what it's like when a sluice box turns gold from end to end on 7 or 8 occasions, and three of those times it was my own. You think totally different after that. I know on your trip you will find at least a few nuggets and that's going to be exciting - but after that, you're going to be thinking beyond the basics of ID'ing a target to finding a source. You're on a building block curve here and certainly everyone's advice is valid - you just have to figure out what makes sense for you and the goal you have monetary wise. In my case, I approached it like a business (and it turned into one0 and it simply did not make sense to go 2000 miles to find a few nuggets. It did make sense to go 2000 miles to learn how to find a few nuggets if I could put that together into finding a source or a pay-streak that would pay in volume or learn enough to where I had the knowledge to reliably find minerals for others. You're on the same path i believe - this isn't a lark with you.

Before this clarification (BIG GOLD) I had put one silver dime in a plastic container, 1 pre-1975 nickel, and a small lead fishing weight. I replaced the items with: 9 silver dimes, 6 nickels, and a large lead weight. Now i'm off to test what my friend's Minelab xterra 305 "sees" buried in 3-5 inches of mortar sand. Will advise.

Not yet, Adam. When we moved into our cabin here in Alabama we didn't realize a few things - the wiring was shot . . . so we re-wired the place, went through Hurricane Michael (which exposed all the leaks we fixed), and then came the coldest winter in 30 years - and we found out there wasn't any caulking in the lower seams (the ones you don't see). With a stiff N. wind it was as cold inside as out! So - we've been busy but now have all that behind us and will start to look for AL gold this summer some. Just testing - and we'll put the results and locations when we get them. Good luck to you out there!

My favorite word, and I've often been accused of being one, is 'sesquipedalian.' When broken down: (1) 'sesqui' (one and a half; e.g. sesquicentennial is the 150 year anniversary of something); (2) 'ped' (of the foot); (3) 'alian' (of a person). All together: a person who uses big (one and a half foot long) words.

where do you get those maps
@mattmattsongold
@mattmattsongold 6 жыл бұрын
You would do a search for: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Papers House Documents (mine is Volume 72 59th Congress 1st Session 1905-1906). There are many other volumes through the years. Hollywood convinced most that mining was a simply a haphazard affair, but it was anything but - very well documented by professionals of the times (and they were very good). You can also look up Muriel Sibel Wolle for any of her books which contain numerous maps and buy them online.

The books will come up as they come up and you'll have to be very sharp and on the net frequently doing searches to get them. Matt, you say use nickel pre 1975, but in the research I find that nickels from 1946-2014 have the same composition (75% CU, 25% NI). War nickels, 1942-45 are (56% CU, 35% AG, 9% MG). What am i missing?
@mattmattsongold
@mattmattsongold 6 жыл бұрын
Nothing. I just put the cutoff date at 1975. They're floating the idea of going to steel nickels and all sorts of things to debase the money further - use common sense - use a good nickel or lead to practice with.
@johnhenson8862
@johnhenson8862 6 жыл бұрын
I trust that this isn't a silly question: but why use a nickel? Why not get a small plastic pipe, sealed at one end. Put in a small gold coin. (Now you know why its sealed.) Then dig your hole, place tube in, pack around it, then fill tube with local soil. Do that for different depths and small gold coin flat and on edge. If you have different value gold coins available, you can also get an idea of size with depth. Basically- what is signal strength and detectability difference between nickel and gold?
@mattmattsongold
@mattmattsongold 6 жыл бұрын
Not a silly question and absolutely nothing wrong with your suggestion at all. Many will have an actual nugget glued to a poker chip. There are endless options. We're simply trying to standardize around a common object with a like signature to gold so everyone can quickly figure out if their metal detector is appropriate. If you can find a nickel, you can find gold nuggets. If someone tells me their metal detector will sound on a nickel at 5" in Mississippi I can pretty much assure them it will sound off at 2 1/2" with the same coil on the same size target in Arizona - not sure I could do the same if they said they were testing with a 1841 1$ gold coin and then switched to another gold coin/depth. You on the other hand are going out in the field to find gold and if you have gold coins or nuggets in various sizes - make use of them! Hope you have a very productive time, you are off to a good start with real gold - but your depths and testing will be totally unique to your detector/coil combination/gold coin used.

@mattmattsongold
@mattmattsongold 6 жыл бұрын
I don't think I ever did, just included where they are found (or what to search for) in the picture itself. Frankly these are not easy to find, not easy to interpret, and not easy to re-find (why I downloaded them immediately, and included them in the videos).. ASTRE is the most useful of the images. Search for "Death Valley ASTRE" or "Death Valley Minerals NASA image" etc., etc., etc. until you get what you want or not. Research is like pulling hens teeth, but that's why you will be successful, I can tell. You are doggedly tracking down all you can about your target area and that is the key. PS: you'll never learn everything you wish before you go - you will have to go . . .

Will be traveling out west soon to do some prospecting. Was hoping you could point me in the right direction. The areas i'm interested in are near the middle fork of the feather river.Possibly we could email a bit and chat?

Missed this, Charles - basically the Feather River gold is worked best by snatching boulders with a winch and scooping out all around the circumference of the boulder footprint. I don't know of any special places - it's just hard work and dangerous, but the gold is there and plentiful throughout that system.

Matt, you show 3 miles of pediment in one of your figures. Does this mean we should prospect as far as 3 miles from the drop off, or were you just indicating that the pediment would be as far out as 3 miles, or more?
@mattmattsongold
@mattmattsongold 6 жыл бұрын
The pediment can be 3 miles out - and actually could be any distance, whatever distance the mountain, or the mountain range has weathered back (eroded). Here is a picture: pubs.usgs.gov/of/2004/1007/fans.html note you can see the cracks and crevices - you can clearly understand how you could see a big piece of gold (or any size for that matter) easily.

Thanks again Matt. I hope I am not taking advantage of your good nature by asking all these questions. I guess I'll reach the limit when you stop replying:) It's also a good thing that I'm not going out West until Jan. 2019 as you are giving me lots of "food for thought" and I learn something new when I re-read/re-study which sparks more questions.

I've had friends chased out of areas by law enforcement in upper California. Where is it legal to look for gold and not get harassed?
@mattmattsongold
@mattmattsongold 6 жыл бұрын
Easier to say where it is not legal: National Parks, anything with National Monument status. Bureau of Land Management land (huge areas) are open. A DeLorme backroads atlas (DeLorme Atlas and Gazetteer) shows the BLM lands. I keep one handy as a quick reference when in the field.

You're welcome - I forgot to say, National Forests are supposed to be open - but some are not at the discretion of the District Office (and sadly some of that is our fellow detector enthusiasts not following rules and staying out of sensitive areas within the district). So - within a National Forest - detecting for nuggets in open areas is one thing, and detecting in areas of old cabins or towns/gravesites can be quite another and quickly amount to trouble. Good luck out there!

Little confused I am Matt. Why would tops of dredge piles be "renewed?" Because heavy rains have washed off tops of piles and made old gold accessible?
@mattmattsongold
@mattmattsongold 6 жыл бұрын
Exactly right - an inch removed is an inch of fresh material your metal detector can "see" (whatever brand or coil you have).
@eeanderson49
@eeanderson49 6 жыл бұрын
But this only applies to river dredged material, right? Tailings from Dry Mines would not apply, right?
@mattmattsongold
@mattmattsongold 6 жыл бұрын
Correct - but you never know about a dry mine dump, the top may have been rich too, and stopped for other reasons (FDR gold confiscation - WWII stoppage). Unless you dig into the history of a mine, you don't know (and the histories of mine shutdowns were recorded and the last public store of info is with the BLM.

Hey Matt here in Virginia I'm working a creek I believe hasn't been worked or (prospected) by the old timers but there are some hardrock mines nearby !!!! I'm currently working this decomposed bedrock and I'm getting plenty salt & pepper crumbs with and occasional picker here and there !!!! My question is did the old timers get the big gold in this creek perhaps or is it that I'm gonna find the bigger gold beneath all this small gold that I'm digging up ? Because the theory if I'm correct is that the bigger gold lays directly on top of the hardrock bedrock which would be somewhere underneath all this decomposing bedrock !!! Whats good about this decomposing bedrock is that it runs the whole width of the creek and also a great amount of distance parallel to the creek as well !!! I'm gonna get me a small 2 inch dredge in there pretty soon !!!! If you could shed some light or helpful info on my findings would be much appreciated !!!! Thanks Matt
@mattmattsongold
@mattmattsongold 6 жыл бұрын
Most likely: they didn't get the gold - especially if you're working a small creek. If you're working decomposing bedrock, with pickers in it, you are probably in the source (vein or finger vein) and are in reality hard rock mining (just in a different way). With a dredge we used to refer to it as hard rock mining with a dredge. If the gold is formed later (something I haven't covered in classes yet) it is usually smaller, but more concentrated, and this may be what you're in. You find gold, then none, then gold, then none type thing. The main thing is follow the quartz stringers in the bedrock - pry them out as you're doing, and then suck out the surrounding matrix with your 2" (that would be a real good asset) or hand dredge or however you're doing it. One of the techniques we used to use was take a bar, break all we could up, then take a 5" dredge and take that up, then take a 3" dredge, and try to bore holes where seams were - then take a 2" dredge and do the same. Sometimes you'll be able to bore a hole with the 2" a number of feet further than the previous dredge (in your case you'll be using a bar, probing for seams and holes in the rock to use the 2 on). If the nuggets you see are rough - or crystalline (look up pictures of crystalline gold) you are in a vein. May be rich one - may simply be a small one, but you are at the source and that is exciting! Good luck!
@jeffreyelliott622
@jeffreyelliott622 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Matt You nailed it especially when you stated that I'm getting the small gold at times then none at times and boom back in the same hole only deeper and boom back in the gold again !!! So what I'm doing Is literally working moving to different spots and working the decomposed bedrock in other spots not far !!!! I went 2 to 3 miles further down stream and same bedrock but less gold but I've also had as good a luck further upstream about 2 miles as well so it definitely is a game of chess or hide and seek as I've mentioned b4 but I'm gonna stick with it in that one spot which is about 30 yards in length and 5 yards in width of the creek !!!! And you're 100% correct on my finding the quartz stringers because that's when I got into the pickers but when the stringers seemed to run out I'm back into the small salt and pepper crumbs of gold but it 's still fun find it nonethe less small or big !!!!
@mattmattsongold
@mattmattsongold 6 жыл бұрын
Keep working upstream . . . (towards the mountain source). You may get into a main vein! Again, good luck.

Hey Matt one more time do you believe in all honesty that there is some BIG gold still out there somewhere to be had ? I personally believe it is but perhaps definitely in 1. Australia 2. California 3. Arizona 4. Interior of Alaska !!! And what I mean by BIG gold is 10 lb. specimens 5 lb. specimens 3 lb. specimens and I'm sure they're out somewhere !!!! Ok now we perhaps know and agree for sure that there are definitely 20 oz. 10 oz. and 5 oz. nuggets to be had in those same places !!!! And I'm quite sure we know that the earth is just loaded with tons of small gold meaning pickers right down to the salt & pepper crumbs of gold not to mention the gold that is in the ocean and can't be extracted economically that is !!! I truly wonder if there's any BIG gold within any of this bedrock I'm digging in because I already know that it's salt & pepper gold with some pickers thrown into the scheme of things ? And as history states that a 9 lb. nugget was found at this hard rock gold mine not far from where I'm prospecting !!!! Your thoughts and opinion on my perspective of the subject matter will surely be appreciated !!!! Thanks Matt !!!

No one needs to speculate on the obvious - every time a new picture is posted of some huge nugget found, or one is posted for sale, we are reminded to be humble in the midst of Mother Nature (God, Grand Architect Of The Universe, Great Spirit, etc.,) who simply listens not to any such sayings as "all the gold has been found" or more commonly, "the 49'rs found 90% of all the gold. If any of that were true: you, myself, all the people posting their finds on KZbin, everything shown in reality TV, is mere fiction and fraudulent. By the mere fact you are finding some in a state not well know for it, is exceptional truth to the often told lie. Big gold is certainly out there - many of us have seen and mined it, and it is now time for young people to replace us and start finding their own. If there is a 9 pound nugget on record then there is another waiting to be found. Of course the chances are slim - a lot of difference cruising miles of pediment on a 4wheeler looking for one in the Western states than doing the backbreaking work of busting bedrock day by day - but you do have that chance - and it is paying you with gold to hunt it all along! Not many things in life do that (a bass boat rarely pays). Should you decide to go to one of the areas you're speaking of you will have to learn that area, and work it systematically as well to score, but the odds of a big nugget out west are elevated I would agree, and some of that is simply due to the enormous weathering cycles we don't tend to see in the East.
