I often get asked where to get quail eggs. I myself am not set up to sell eggs on a large enough scale to meet my viewers demands but there are several people that are. In this video i discuss whether or not you should start off with live birds or eggs and where to get whichever you are looking for.

Slightly Rednecked So one of the hatchlings can't stretch it's legs out and shuffles around on it's "knees". Have you experienced this? If so, is there anything to do about it except let nature take it's course? I tried stretching the legs out and they can't stretch out all the way.

Well, 20% hatch rate for the eggs. Candled what was left and they were infertile/never developed. Glad to have the 24 out of 120 eggs, however. Any start to self sufficiency is better than no start. Thanks Chris!!

Thank you for the videos, I've been considering raising quail for about seven years now, just waiting for the backyard space to do it. Now we've got a nice size backyard and I'm really excited! I'm definitely going to be starting with some nice eggs from your sponsor, looks great. Sadly I may have to wait a few months for our renovation...ugh! Do you have a video on building your quail hutch? I'm going to look for it now, I've been binge watching your channel. I love how informative and clear your videos are, wonderful job :-) You deserve more subscribers, excellent work.

Hey Chris, I went to Kansas City Quail Farm website and looked around for a while, and in reading the descriptions for the jumbos and the jumbo pharaohs, they seem to have exactly the same descriptions on egg size 12 to 14 grams. The only difference seeming to be the body weight between the jumbos which was 14 oz to 16 oz, but 12 oz to 14 oz for the jumbo pharaohs. So I'm slightly confused. I'm going to give them a call tomorrow and see what information I can find out! Thank you again for yet another superb instructional, you still make the best videos on KZbin!
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the kind comments. There really isn't a huge difference between the two. Pharaohs are more for large eggs and the regular jumbo "meat makers" are more for growing out larger birds faster. But again, not a significant difference in my opinion. Give them a call and they will help you out.

One thing I have not seen you do a video on is the permits and legalities of raising quail. I understand that different states have different rules but a general rundown for your state would be interesting. I live in the same state as you do but am confused as to whether or not these are a "game bird" or just exactly how they are classified. Thanks for all your efforts....you are VERY informative!
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 жыл бұрын
That is a great suggestion. In general coturnix quail are allowed just about everywhere because they are not native. If you wanted to raise a native quail (like bob whites) they would require a permit. I will see what I can do to get that topic addressed in more detail in a video soon.

@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind comments. The brooder can hold about 40 birds for about 2 weeks and then it starts getting a little over crowded. I generally keep the birds in the brooder until they are fully feathered out which is about 2 to 3 weeks old and they they are good to go out to the grow out pens. Hope that helps.

I just started watching your videos about quails. a quick question can you mix the different quail breeds? later in the video, I see where you have the silver the meat makers, etc all in the same brooding box but do you leave them mixed even in the runs or cages? are they all subspecies of coturnix quails? I appreciate you making such well informed videos thanks!!
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the kind comments. You can definitely mix them all together. if you are trying to get jumbo birds it is best to keep those isolated but you can keep them all together if you don't really care about that. They will interbreed just fine.

have you ever had a quail hatch with its feet kinda curved backwards and can't walk what should I do?
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 7 жыл бұрын
yes. That is know as splayed leg. It is caused by the bird having a hard time getting traction to walk. You can sometimes treat it by using something like medical tape to tape the legs together and forcing it to stand up. It is hard to explain in text and I don't have a video on that subject yet (haven't had the issue in a while) but think of it kind of like building a leg brace for the bird. I have also had success by taking something like a piece of pvc and putting the bird inside it so it is forced to stand upright. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I hope that helps.

@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 6 жыл бұрын
It is really up to you on what you want. If I was breeding solely for food (meat and eggs) then the Jumbo Pharaoh are the way to go. I just keep some silvers because i like the way they look. You can cross breed them if you want to but you are going to lose the "jumboness" of the jumbo birds over time. I hope that helps.
@catfishmac2817
@catfishmac2817 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks if you didn't cross beef them will they stay jumbo I read some info so kanassas kcf web site that I didn't completely understand a boat the pharaohs breeding if I'm not mistaken I think I spotted a reloading press in one of your videos that's one of my hobbies I really learn a lot from videos if your ever visiting northern Va let me know we could go to the range god bless
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 6 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a plan. Would love some range time in northern VA. if I make it that way I will try to remember to let you know. Stay tuned and if I ever mention a trip to VA remind me. :) As far as the jumos staying jumbo, that depends on a lot of things. They are bread to be jumbo based on genetics. Some of your birds will probably get the bad draw of genes and end up smaller than normal jumbos but if you are selective and only breed the bigger birds you shouldn't have any problems. Hope that helps.

sure. Texas A&M are jumbo birds. But I do find that people tend to call every white bird an A&M and that is not always the case. There is an English White coturnix as well that isn't a jumbo bird. No way of knowing for sure what the seller has but if he has good feedback it is probably ok.

what would cause a quail that just hatched that has been very active just all of a sudden not be able to walk and roll in and flipping over and turning its head weird I think it's going to die but would like to know what I'm doing wrong or is it natural for some birds to get stuff like that
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 7 жыл бұрын
sounds like splayed leg. It is caused by the bird not being able to get traction on the floor. It can be treated by building braces for their legs. Wrap a piece of tape around them to hold them together and force the bird to stand upright. Will usually correct itself in a day or two. I have also had luck but setting a bird in a piece of PVC (about 1/2 inch) so it is held upright. I don't have a video on that topic and can't really do a good job of explaining in the description but google it and you will probably find what you need. Hope that helps and sorry for the slow response.

This may be a crazy question...but, I'm going to be just 40 minutes away from from the KC Quail Farm when I visit my Parents in October. If I packed my brooder, do you think I could safely drive newly hatched Coturnix chicks on a 15 hour car ride home? My husband is driving with me so I could tend to the chicks. My main concern would be making sure their food and water stays stable, and making sure their heat source is secure. I may end up just going with eggs, but I really wanted a wide variety and it looks like they only sell eggs by 15.

Hello, I have an inquiry and I'm hoping someone could elaborate. Well, I'm 15 and turning 16 in less than 2 months. I'm hoping to own coturnix quail of my own but I found out you need a permit (I live in Kansas). I have no idea how to get one and I've been trying to read up on it but everywhere it's vague or just tells me about hunting or whatever. I know this is a stupid question so I apologize. I've just never needed one for anything else and I'm completely clueless how to get one. Any help would be appreciated but, if not, that's fine, too.
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 6 жыл бұрын
I don't think you need a permit for coturnix quail. You would need one for native game birds like bob whites but coturnix are not native and usually don't require any kind of permit (kind of like chickens). You can call your local conservation office or extension office and clarify. Make sure you specify that it is coturnix quail you plan on raising.

I am not sure where to point you. I don't know any local Wisconsin breeders myself. I would suggest that you keep an eye on craigslist. Sorry I can't help more.

Is it necessary, a male quail for quail eggs....? Pls sir
@Slightlyrednecked

no. If you just want eggs for eating all you need are hens.
