It's so rare to find an author who can portray multiple sides convincingly 😍 So so thrilled that we are reading City of Bells!!

Elizabeth Goudge is by far, my favorite author! And (perhaps you know this already?) She was J.K. Rowling's favorite childhood author; and "The Little White Horse" was an inspiration for the "Harry Potter" series!

You are so amazing in your enthusiasm about Elizabeth Goudge books. You have made me want to read her books again. I read mostly books set in England, watch English movies. Love the 1800s.

It is so lovely to listen to you entbusing over Elizabeth Goudge and her books. I was introduced to them by my first High Scbool Engmish teacher who read us little 13 year okds The Little White Horse. I am so grateful to ber for helping me discover the wonderful world of Elizabeth Goudge. My very favourite is The Dean's Watch. I recently lent it to my sister who fell I love with it, and has since also borrowed The City of Bells from me. Yes, I was one of those who was asking : What about the Elliots? Those are very special books, and so full of wonderful life lessons. It's interesting to hear that the books are scarce in America, because here in South Africa, they are also difficult to find. But well worth searching for!

I just found your channel and I'm so glad I did!!! Elizabeth Goudge's works always end up figuring high on my favorites lists for one reason or another, so everything you said here definitely spoke to my heart! I find myself returning to "The Scent of Water" in particular often. "But God will see it", YESSS! I think you described her work brilliantly when you say how she combines a fluffy fairy-tale feel with hard-edged truths. And oh my goodness! Those quotes from "The Dean's Watch" give me tingles of happiness! Thanks for sharing your lovely thoughts, Emma!

Island Magic is based on life in Guernsey, where her mother's family was from. It has a very transcendantly beautiful atmosphere.

I just finished reading The Rosemary Tree with the Elizabeth Goudge Book Club on Instagram, so this video came at such a good time! Thank you Emma! I only have five full-length Elizabeth Goudge novels left to read, so I think I will plan to read the rest by the end of 2021. She wrote so many novels, which is such a gift! And they're the kind of novels that only get better with a re-read. I read The Scent of Water first, so I do love that one especially. I didn't know anything about The Rosemary Tree before I read it, so it was an unexpected delight, too. I totally agree with you that the depth of her spiritual insight into nature, place, human nature, etc. is so unique and so powerful.

Hearing you talk about this has inspired me to check her out. This happens to me a lot when I hear a booktuber talk about an author they love and it makes me curious. I have an aunt that I think would like her if she read more.

I have fallen in love with Elizabeth Goudge over the last couple years and she has quickly become one of my favorite authors! Her writing is so vivid; the way she talks about nature is captivating and the way in which she talks about faith is so beautiful and real 💕 I read City of Bells last spring and I swear, I was underlining quotes on nearly every page 😂

I'm so glad I clicked on this vlog - I've been subscribed to your channel for years - love your WDW vids! I am just finishing my fourth "Twisted Tales" novel (Disney), and was about to search for something new ... I will 100% start with City of Bells and hopefully love Ms. Goudge as much as you (and so many others) do :-)

I have a notion to make a summer project out of reading Green Dolphin Street! It sounds like a Goudge that shouldn't be rushed. You are in for such a treat with Island Magic! It might actually be my favorite Elizabeth Goudge book I've read.

I like Willa Cather’s writings and how she ties nature and human nature. Is Elizabeth Goudge similar?
@BookishPrincess3 жыл бұрын
Hmm that’s a good question! Goudge does write beautifully about nature, but I feel like nature has it more figured out compared to human beings/human nature in her books! When I think back on O Pioneers, I wouldn’t say they’re all that similar, but then I think of Shadows on the Rock, and that is more in the same vein. Those are the only two Willa Cather books I’ve read, I need to read more by her!

@Bookish princess So not related to this author but I thought I would give a book series recommendation I think youd like the Fairy Retold Series by Regina Doman. If you havent read them before I think diving in with first book called Shadow of the Bear.

City of Bells and The Dean’s Watch are my favorite of her novels. I haven’t read all of them yet, however. The Little White Horse was actually my least favorite! For some reason it just didn’t click with me.
