I didn't learn to dig deep, but I learned by years of teaching struggling learners to read. As a Special Educator, often there was no specific curriculum. Or there was a sped curriculum, but as we know there is no magic curriculum to follow that works with ALL kids. So hours of reading with kids and observing errors and responses, has taught me to dig deeper to pinpoint missed skill or language deficit. I do love the Phonics Screeners I've found by searching online. It gives me a place to begin!

Yes, like you said - hard to find something that works for all students! I love that you've found a way to dig deeper to assess skills for students.

Parent question…my 1st grader is a very slow reader. He knows his letter sounds, but has to take time to decode almost every word. Even though he reads very slowly, his comprehension of what he’s read is great! He knows all the details of what he read…would you recommend just re-reading texts multiple times to build fluency? Or something else?

Great question! Here's a blog I recently wrote about this - learningattheprimarypond.com/blog/how-to-build-fluency-with-k2-students/

Were you trained in how to diagnose reading issues with students in your teacher training? Let me know in the comments!

No. Not at all. It’s all been on my own. Searching out training.

Can you send me the link for the free assessment? I clicked on all of them and am having difficulty locating it. Thanks!
