When we found out that there was a NEW Oregon Backcountry Discovery Route, we couldn't wait to check it out. So, when we found ourselves with a few days to kill after hanging out at Overland Expo PNW, we decided to explore Section 5 of the new Oregon BDR!

That looked like a fun trip, there’s a lot to see and do in central Oregon. Very impressive that you had a flashlight in the cave.

Awesome man, love hearing these videos inspire you to get out. Get that Tundra out there! If you're in WA, check out the 'Washington Overland' Facebook group. Often times people will post about group trips or looking for a buddy to hit the trails with

@WheretoNextOverland temps are just right. Mtns will cool to 50s 60s during the day and 30s at night. Plus bugs will calm down so that's a big plus.

I always think I'm going to run into a bear or mountain lion when I go into caves. I may have stayed at the entrance too 😅

Not to mention, deadly gasses… I’ll always pass unknown caves in the wilderness just because I don’t know what kind of gas is stagnant in there…

This cave definitely falls under "known point of interest" more so than random cave in the wilderness.

I’ve heard that OR BDR is much more complicated to drive. But in your video I don’t see any obstacle, looks pretty smooth, like WA BDR. Do you think stock 4Runner can make it (in the same weather and conditions)? This section and maybe some others you tried.
@WheretoNextOverland
@WheretoNextOverland 3 ай бұрын
Oh yeah, a stock 4Runner would make it though this section EASY. Haven't done any other sections of this new ORBDR yet, but I'd be surprised if there's anything a stock 4Runner couldn't handle. Note: there were some alt routes on this section that we avoided as Intel seemed to indicate they were more dual spot bike friendly vs truck friendly

@@WheretoNextOverland thanks for a quick response! Bought 4Runner recently, haven’t started building it yet. But already started taking some simple trails. And looking for new ones :) Will probably meet with you guys occasionally on WA roads one day. Have great trips and vids!

That's when I open up the gap between me and the person in front of me, as someone that was born and raised in southern California I know dust all too well since everywhere you go is dusty except when crossing a river LOL

What map/gps app are you using? Did you get the maps and/or trax from the BDR site?
@WheretoNextOverland
@WheretoNextOverland 11 ай бұрын
Yep, downloaded the .GPX file file straight from the BDR site (ridebdr.com) and then imported it into both Gaia GPS and our Garmin. Super easy!

Do you guys use ONX for this? Can’t find that trail on there!
@WheretoNextOverland

Best place to find this route (or any BDR route) is at www.ridebdr.com. From there you can download a GPX file of the route you're interested in and then upload it into onX!

Yep, that was Gaia. You can download .gpx files from the ridebdr.com website for the BDR routes and then upload them to whichever map app you prefer (Gaia, onX, etc...)

@@WheretoNextOverland there was a bunch of ground burned up that summer in Oregon. The 3 up around Detroit were over 100,000 but less than 200,000 each. Then there was the labor day fires that were really stretching responders thin. Then 2021 didn't get much better producing one of the largest fires in state history burning over 413,000 acres.

Who cares about "making time" when you are out in the brush? The slower I go the better. But then, I am 77 years old.
