honestly, thank you for this episode as a young artist who likes to be given the decisions more than making them, it's really nice to hear from professionals that there's a place for me in the industry, even if I'm not an entrepreneur myself. thank you very much, this helped a lot with my anxiety

I like making decisions for my own projects but I hate making decisions when it's for someone else's project. If it's someone else's project, I usually get stuck in a loop of coming up with ideas and then discarding them, because I don't know if they match the expectations of that person. For my own projects, I just do what feels right to me and experiment with the ideas I have. Don't know if I can ever make money with my art but even if not, I will continue to draw, learn, and practice because I love to draw. I stopped drawing once because I thought I wasn't good enough and didn't even realize how miserable that made me feel until I started drawing again. I won't make that mistake ever again!

Because you don't know if they match their expectations? That's exactly where my talent lies, figuring out what it is that people want. Some people are terrible when it comes to communicating to someone else what they want but that usually means they themselves don't even know what they want. And I'm talking about individual people here, not large groups because the wants and needs of large groups of people don't make sense to me hahaha. But the only reason why I love designing is because I can take the perspective of different people who are invested with the design and making sure it matches all their expectations. I love all kinds of feedback and trying to puzzle together something that makes everyone happy. Before you ask, yes I'm a people pleaser. lol.

Skip to about 5:50. Thought this video would talk more about art career options. It did not. That’s my bad. It Kinda started out eye rolling at students that aren’t comfortable with project design vs decision makers. and ends with saying that both instruction followers and decision makers are both perfectly valid art career paths.

UGG.... I love this discussion. I went through so much of this last year and it was so worth it. Entrepreneurship got me into solving problems more and more from Communication to Designing and setting structure to executing the vision. All fun things to do in an entrepreneurial environment, but by yourself, I see how they can be overwhelming.

Great talk. I think one thing the people could take in count is Prince career in the late 90's. He defined in one interview the success as create music and the people could be able to hear it. Even thought he was a musician, some advices from Prince , as a creator and enterpreneur, could be useful as a artist and enterpreneur.

feels relatable mate. my guess and attempt at an advice to both myself and everyone reading would probally be going out for smaller solo projects. maybe designing a indie video game, making short animated movies, and so on. i really just speaking with a theory and not experience though. actually if anyone has an opinion on this i would like them to comment as well.

I disagree that artist and bussinessmen are connected the way Proko suggests. A bussinessman, I believe, is a solution solver always connected to having profits to cover your expenses in that business, at least. But an artist is much more complex and I don't see that all artists have the same core goal or solution to solve. Some might search for a solution of the problem of stylizing something, or find the solution of creating a new scene or world, or the hardest, I believe, find the solution of showing to others the images you have inside of your head exactly as they appear to you.

You are half right. Theres difference between an entrepreneur and a businessman. An entrepreneur creates his own project, works on it and makes it a thing while a businessman looks and research for ongoing projects and offers a solution. There are variety of artists, some falls in entrepreneurship and some in dealership, etc. Its a bigger field than what people thing its to be. For example a commission artist is like a salary employee or freelancer who depends on others projects.

I know it's not directly related, but I keep stressing over whether it's a viable choice to self-teach drawing and become legit good at it, so I can start earning some form of income from it eventually I understand it takes time and diligence, which is why I'm afraid the time and energy I'll invest in it won't pay off (I've done my research and know well how to go about teaching myself/practicing, I'm just unsure of committing to the endeavor 😓)

Try both ways. I have been drawing /painting / earning money with art since like age 12-13? And now im 23. I learned everything myself, and tbh, im not afraid to say that im good at what i do. Iv done so many projects and commisions for random people that now, after almost 10 years of doing that, i dont want to anymore, and i will finally go and study art in an academy, because thats the next natural step my art “career” has taken. And idk if ill be doing any random commisions anymore. What im trying to say is- do what feels natural at the moment. If u are really into art and have some ideas already, how you could gain profit from it- ure already on the right path. Wish u the best of luck!

I’m really excited to have found this episode and know about the podcast; I’m gonna be checking it out tonight, because it seems like a lot of advice I could really use. However, I did NOT appreciate that guy insinuating that a good artist is a good capitalist/entrepreneur. I hear what he’s saying about problem solving but it felt so oversimplified. That one part was irritating.

I think the defining difference is fearlessness. I'll reference DUNE here in that it is the mind killer. Regardless of your skill, if you've been terrified and terrorized, the art exists no matter what, but the outward model for the person is then banged up like a broken peroscope. I think the "Shape" of the industry is just needed to be comprehended. And EGO is the issue with this. Your knowledge and what you can accomplish sometimes is hampered by either communication skills of yourself, or those around you. So freelance is also about mitigating. I enjoy the conversation here cause it prods the idea of: "What is is an art director compared to a Director?" And it's process equivalent. Time. The director has vision but no time to execute. The Asst helps structure it even if the director COULD do it on their own. I believe THAT would be the defining factor of freelancing to studio. Studio is an academic structure of modulization. We segment the aspects of product needed. Tops and lids instead of the whole gallon of milk. So, if I'm a swiss army knife. I have to convince you of that. I have to show you it. What are you allowed to do? Can you ask for that money? Is this worth that? A director can say this is worth ______________. An asst director asks what is it worth. An asst director is training to BE a director. This academia is a martial arts game without the EGO. Chefs are that way too. But I think primarily what links Chefs, Visual Artists, Musicians, abstractionists, media moguls and Producer-ship as a whole is really how much you're playing against the house (gambling style) versus those who think they ARE the house. Walt Disney had no Ego. (Yensid) Mickey Mouse was just a trope he replaced. He felt lucky and then he felt like a rat after his rabbit was stolen. I mean it's not difficult to trace the BIGGEST heroes backwards and see their successes and read it out and figure out their soulful nature. I think the difference is also in who can see that soulful nature. Who thinks they own it. Who wants to ship it, cut it, dissect it, and grow it in some formula tube. But that never works. Most Directors don't care if you copy em and the signature is just a formality. The whole of their being is woven into what they do. If you're serious about something. All that remains is to give yourself permission to look another human in the eye and say, "My time is invaluable like yours. This is what I'm worth. My brain is an engine you're paying for." If you can't do that, you're trapped. If you see and can't speak it, then you're also trapped... Abuse is rampant in psychology and art can't escape it (in an obvious manner). Mayhaps the notion would be: Value the Self. Value the self. Is this abstraction so wildly different that it's valuable? I was asked that by Kevin Lee (from Ai in Tennessee) and I couldn't answer him. So I took years reading and cross reading and scanning and studying and drawing until I'm seeing different pictures in my head than anybody else whatsoever. And anybody can do that really. That's why the technicality of gettin it outta me is more important than a brand or package. You selling passive or active? If you can passively sit and run through worlds and scripts. Ask for the money. You deserve it. Self-Worth is the variable here. Ego artistry requires a HUGE handle on EGO alone and I suspect it accounts for like... half or more of the visual arts medium.
