When the cold is extreme, electronics are put to the test, and the batteries in a trail camera I the arctic face a tough life as the camera stays outside around the clock. Which types of batteries handle the cold best, which last the longest, and which are the winners in the long run? Here is an initial summary of the battery tests I conducted during a period of extreme cold. More tests will follow, and I will spend a lot of time finding the best battery solution for a trail camera that stays outdoors year round.
.
o summarize, I can conclude that in extreme cold, from -30°C and below, classic alkaline batteries perform the best. Rechargeable Ni-MH batteries are the type that fail first, as they lose their charge very quickly in such temperatures.
.
Impressive, however, are the rechargeable lithium batteries, which performed remarkably well despite the extreme cold. What I can observe is that their lifespan in the cold is slightly shorter than that of classic alkaline batteries, but there is a significant difference. The alkaline batteries were completely drained after the camera stopped functioning. When I tested them, there was no voltage left. In contrast, the lithium batteries still had significant voltage when I brought them inside to test. I was able to use them in a camera again for several more days when the temperature was milder.
.
This indicates that it is the extreme cold that temporarily prevents the lithium batteries from delivering sufficient voltage, but in warmer temperatures, they still have plenty of power left. This suggests that there is a breaking point at a certain temperature, which I aim to identify. Hopefully, it might turn out that rechargeable lithium batteries last longer than alkaline ones even in cold conditions, as long as the temperature is not extreme. If this proves to be the case, they will clearly be the long-term winners.
.
Finally, I must say that regardless of the battery and its lifespan, I am incredibly impressed by the trail cameras from Uovision. The fact that you can have a camera outside for so long in extreme cold, and it still manages to wake up, take a picture or video when an animal passes by, and send the material to the app on your phone, is absolutely amazing.
