Thankfully my LBS Brompton dealer knows all this and does the work for me. But I do love your videos, always informative and entertaining.

I learned about Brompton chains the hard way. One day on a commute, my chain snapped on me as I was riding out of the saddle to get up a hill. Luckily didn't crash. I had a chain breaker in my saddle bag, so I thought no big deal, I'll take out the broken link and then reconnect...only to find out the chain was too short to reconnect w/o using a quick-link. I've ridden for many years on various bikes, and this was the first time I ever had a chain snap on me. I have since changed over from the 8-speed SRAM chain to 10-speed Shimano and KMC chains.

Super informative video that was clear, thank you! It would be useful to also know how the different chain rings (44/50/54) and sprockets affect the performance of the Brompton! 😊

Thanks for watching and for the question. The best place to see the performance differences is on the hub calculator you can kind check out the differences when you have different gearing’s and bikes xldev.co.uk/bgc.html

Start the message with a song = Take These Chains from My Heart = Ray Charles , Hopefully when Brompton wakes up to the future with belt drive systems with Rolloff offering 14 gears with an internal hub with one shifter it’s only a matter of time when someone in Brompton will say why don’t we ring Rolloff to ask could they make a hub that will fit our exciting triangles and past triangles version because many around the world would like to buy conversion kits = maybe the penny will drop at some point .

I still wonder how "a belt" comes into a frame without a chain link? And I had a "belt drive bike" years ago, on a, slightly folding bike, with its wheels only fastened to one side by that! It functioned horribly and was even more heavy than riding on my Brompton, but also on small wheels! But its handlebar folded down in each side and that was smart. Finn. Denmark

@@finncarlbomholtsrensen1188 just have a look at the gentleman in Scotland that turns the Brompton into 18”or 20” wheels with either a Alfine 11 speed or a rolloff 14 speed both with belt drive which have a pulley tensioner that gets released when folding.
@effyleven

Belt drive is a complication, not a simplification, due to the fact that belts must NOT be folded.
@KavanOBrien

@@effyleven That’s not correct anymore, gates have improved the product and have said they are ok with the folding issue.

Thanks for the video. I will change my chain very soon. It will be a 9 speed chain Connex Stainless with their reusable link. And I will wax this chain for less oil on my trousers. For length I will go the way just put both chains in parallel on a flat surface and shorten the new one to the length of the old one. That safes me -hopefully - from counting links. Wish me luck. 😛

Hi there and thanks for this (once again) really comprehensive guide! Could it be possible to have a link to the tool you used to calculate the number of links? I'm asking because I'm considering your T/P Line mod to a 5-speed, and I'm wondering what would be the correct number of links, having a 56 tooth chainring and up to 21 tooth sprocket… Many thanks for your work anyway!

Hi dear lady and thank you for your insightful videos. You’ve suggested one changes their sprocket when replacing the chain. May I ask why you suggest so and if you mean the entire set in the back and/or the chain ring too? Thank you.
@brilliantbikes
@brilliantbikes 5 ай бұрын
We generally replace the rear sprockets, not the chain ring, as the chain and sprockets really tend to wear together, so if you add a new chain on the old sprockets it generally slips. Thanks for watching!

Merci, exactement ce que je cherchais. Just wondering, i am switching from a 54 to a 44 on a p-line so i should cut 4 links. Do i boldly go there or should i do it by steps and how can i test between the steps if i am ok or not yet. By the angle of the tension arm i guess?

If the new front Chainring fits the C line, do the P Line rear sprocket then fit, too?

I recently replaced my C Line explorer 6 speed with a 39 tooth chain ring, something you have elegantly demonstrated on a previous episode. You recommended removing 4 links from the original chain. Is that still your recommendation ?

Thanks for your helpful videos. Since in my country Brompton chains are not sold, Can KMC Z8.3 and Shimano HG40 chains be used on six and three speed Bromptons? Those chains are 3/32. While SRAM are 7.1mm pin length, Shimano and KMC are 7.3mm. Does this matter or not? Thanks again for your help.
