went to Dollywood for the first time this fall and man i was so impressed with big bear mountain and hope more parks get these launch style family coasters. feels like Hagrid's motor bike adventure in how it hugs the ground and does a bunch of turns and little airtime hills that don't stop coming but never feels intense. a coaster that is just pure fun for everyone.

Pacing in terms of how fast the coaster goes does not do GCIs justice. GCIs rely on good profiling and quick transitions from one element to the next. You don't need tons of speed for that. Wild Eagle has plenty of speed, but it doesn't feel as fast because the elements are more drawn out. Pacing in terms of quick transitions from one element to the next is more enjoyable pacing to me, but that is nearly impossible to quantify mathematically.

Big Bear Mountain is fun, it hits better than some regular non-family coasters. With that said, Dollywood needs a large Giga Coaster to compete with Cedar Flags and a VelociCoaster type ride to compete with Universal. From what the park started as, to what it is now...Dolly Parton deserves major credit from taking it from a ho hum park to competing for worldwide #1 theme park designation.

Big Bear Mountain is my new favorite family coaster. I couldn't believe how long of a ride it was. I thought it must be almost over a couple times, then it kept going, and it never feels like it's losing steam. It's got plenty of mild floater airtime moments, perfect for a family coaster, it's perfectly smooth, and the on board audio adds a lot. Lightning Rod's drop is 165 feet, but I've heard from a few unconfirmed sources that the lift hill is actually 200 ft, making it a hyper. That would make sense, for the drop to not clear the entire height of the lift, as the quad-down's power comes from that extra elevation drop needed at the end.

Dollywood shot up my rankings this year. I can never seem to have a full day there but the few hours I had were really good this year. My sister and I went there in July the day we went had a big thunderstorm going through in the afternoon so we bought timesavers so she could get all of the credits before the rides went down. We were able to get all of the credits minus big bear mountain since it was a two hour wait and the rain was gonna start in a hour. So instead of riding big bear mountain we got merch, cinnamon bread, and took a photo lap before leaving the park. Afterwards we had cinnamon bread and pizza for lunch. All in all a good day despite the weather.

Think of the pacing number as "average speed during prime ride time". Sometimes a coaster feels faster (or slower) than the numbers would suggest. Also, keep in mind that the lift hill on more traditional (read: non-launched) coasters isn't counted as prime ride track or prime ride time, so they may feel "slower" for that reason.

I went to Dollywood for the first time in June. But it was a Saturday, and the park was jam packed. It took an hour to get on and ride every coaster, so I didn't get to ride all of them. Lightning Rod was a lot of fun, especially that double quad down. Big Bear Mountain is great for the whole family. I just wished they planted more trees around the track. It would help with the theming. Tennessee Tornado and Wild Eagle are solid coasters. Mystery Mine has great theming, but the first part sucks.

In my experience, all of dollywoods rides are insanely short, especially the coasters. I'm glad this confirmed it. It's the second worst park I've been to, first being Hershey by a wide margin.
@zacg_8 ай бұрын
Worst by what metric?
@tylerrusnak77368 ай бұрын
@@zacg_ Personal enjoyment to be frank. Dollywood had a fine atmosphere but all rides felt shorter than average. It felt like once things got going, the rides over. Food prices are insane. Paths are too small and overcrowded. I went about 8ish years ago, so it may be different now. Hershey is the worst beacuse it's the only park I actually got hurt at (concussion). Operators have no idea about safety. I'm surprised there aren't more deaths to be honest. In addition to it being incredibly unsafe, there's almost no shade, bathrooms were rare, it had a horrible layout, and I got really bored. I'd strongly suggest anyone avoid Hershey Park. The only park worse in the US or Canada is probably Marineland, but I've never gone. Nor will I.
@zacg_8 ай бұрын
@@tylerrusnak7736 I'm sorry you had a bad time at Dollywood and Hersheypark. I love both of those parks, especially Dollywood. I'm honestly shocked to hear you were put off by the food prices at Dollywood seeing as the quality is very high but on average less expensive than Cedar Fair park food. And their sit down restaurants are literally half the price you'd pay at Disney for higher quality (in most cases. I'll admit that some of the nicer EPCOT and Animal Kingdom restaurants are unbeatable.) I love Dollywood for the atmosphere, the shows, the music, food and shopping. The rides are very good in my opinion (though I'm sad to see Lightning Rod lose its signature launch.) The only parks I'd say compete with Dollywood area Silver Dollar City (obviously), Busch Gardens Williamsburg and Universal Islands of Adventure. But I'd take it in a heartbeat over Cedar Point, Kings Island, Six Flags Magic Mountain or Great Adventure. I just find those parks to be somewhat one dimensional. And Cedar Point and Great Adventure have REALLY boring queue lines that you end up waiting in for hours which isn't a great use of your day if you ask me.
