My former wife bought me ten of the black plastic stone crab traps for Christmas one year. They were hard on my boats gunnels. Got lots of crabs out of St Marks but it was hard work. When i had my big strong son to help it was better. I laughed when you suggested your trap maker make them garnet and gold. I am a FSU grad, as are my kids. I love your videos.

I haven't seen any like the ones we used on the Chesapeake Bay when i was a boy. They were about 16 inches square and when they were sitting on bottom the 4 sides laid down flat which allowed the crab to crawl in to eat the bait , usually chicken parts tied to the bottom in the center . When you pulled the trap up the sides quickly closed up , trapping the crab inside of basically a square box . The tricky part was getting the crab out of the trap and into a bushell basket . At the time each boat was allowed 1 full bushel of crabs per day. The good thing about them was the bait lasted all day , and you could just park in one spot , drop traps , and check them like every 10 or 15 minutes . If after a few trys you weren't catching any you could just move to another spot . You could also fish while you were waiting for crabs to enter the trap . . In the late Fall you could just net them floating on the top mating , but we had to throw the females back to keep the population going .

I agree , double traps work better. We got ours at the Snook Nook. But I love chicken leg on a string . Hand line them into a net. We only lost one trap and we was right there, across the waterway fishing. A pontoon boat went by. The trap was gone.

@@Wishard_Wire_Co Good to know. When I bought my house, 2 traps were here and was told they needed BRDs. No biggie, FWC gave me 20 of them free. Whenever I get stopped now, I don't have to wait for FWC to measure them - they're bright orange and easy to see.

I don't live too far from you. All my life I have loved crabbing and just fishing in general, but moved down to Florida about 6 years ago. Unfortunately something happened to me where I was laid up for about 4 years, disabled from a past injury that just took his toll on everything lower. Back, hips, knees, etc everything just fell apart so, I've been through it all, now I'm a little more mobile and I want to get into the fishing again seriously. What I'm asking you right now is, can I just use regular crab traps that open up, and you tie a piece of bait on it and drop it off a bridge , or somewhere else, and maybe catch some blue crabs here and there? I am in the julington Creek area I'm still in St John's county. Do I have to go out to the inshore regions, or can I just go in the St Johns River from different docks, etc?
@TugTrashOutdoors Жыл бұрын
Most anywhere on the St Johns

@@TugTrashOutdoors Thanks bro! I think you might have already even told me that before, but I think because I was so excited to hear that, that I could hardly believe it! Where I moved from, was probably a good hundred miles or so to the nearest beach. But when we'd go, we'd go inshore, beach, and deep sea fishing. When the day was either over, or if we weren't catching anything, we went crabbing, and usually had a blast! Don't really understand what is so satisfying about it cuz you're not really doing that much. Like you said, it's the same for me...extremely satisfying! Lol keep up the videos bro I appreciate it! God bless!
@danaparks881211 ай бұрын
With all the crab traps that you mentioned it, you didn't say anything about the old (unless they still use them) crab traps that are either cubed shape, or triangular and the mainline is attached to a couple other short lines to each side, and then when you drop it down they open up. Those are the only kinds I've ever used. They seem to be more satisfying also because you're sort of just catching it right there and then. Depending on how many traps you have out, or how well the crabbing is actually going, would determine how much you catch, and you catch it right there and then. You don't have to worry about going back and pulling up pots. Do you know anybody that uses those anymore or do you use them ever? Have they been deemed not worth it anymore? Just thought I'd ask, because that's the only thing I own. A couple of them are a little rusty but they still work. I don't have a whole lot of space to store big crab pots, I also don't have a boat that would make it a lot easier to drop them anywhere and go pick them up. I usually have to do it off of a bridge or somewhere on inshore canals where you can see deep holes.
@TugTrashOutdoors11 ай бұрын
Yeah people use them but I was really just covering what I own. 😁
@danaparks881211 ай бұрын
@@TugTrashOutdoors I actually owned a bunch of them, they're the only kind I ever used. Then I saw a couple people commented on here about those as well. Anyway, I guess I ran out of things to ask or say, 😂🤣!Happy Thanksgiving, God bless!
