I've already seen Twin Dilemma (skipped ahead after Planet of the Spiders) and I'm midway through season 20 now and I reckon I'll rewatch it right after I finish Caves of Androzani, to get a real sense of the bitter disappointment that audiences would've felt. I was fortunate enough to have Jubilee be my first Sixth Doctor story.

Second Doctor for me; The Power of the Daleks. Straight in there with a Dalek story, and there seems to have been a genuine effort during Troughton's era to do something more interesting with the Daleks. And because it was the first regeneration, they really made the most of it with the companions initially thinking The Doctor had been replaced by some play-acting alien intruder (as you would) and only gradually coming around to accepting that it's still him.
@New-tu3mn6 ай бұрын
Tom Baker has the best introduction. Not because he had the best first episode story, which he didn’t, but because his winning charisma, charm and rightness for the role were immediately evident. He won you over as the Doctor within 5-minutes. All of the other new Doctors took a number of episodes before you warmed to them. The next shortest time was probably David Tenant, who took until his 2nd episode for me.
@stormhawk33196 ай бұрын
I agree. Although I thought Jon Pertwee had the better overall debut story Tom pretty much nailed it as soon as put his scarf on.
@rnw27396 ай бұрын
Shame that every quality you listed, all fizzled out and vanished over the next few years and by the time of season 16, the once great Tom was a miserable, nasty lead who inserted the most cringe worthy 'gags' when not even warranted, broke the fourth wall, shushed anyone who had lines in his vicinity when they started to deliver them and looked like he hadn't slept or washed in a decade.
@stormhawk33196 ай бұрын
@@rnw2739I agree with all that. Worst thing the BBC did was replace the brilliant Phillip Hinchcliffe as producer and replace him with the inferior Graham Williams who didn’t have the same rapport that Tom and Philip had or the creativity.

@@rnw2739Most, if not all, of which would have taken place off screen, and so, be of no concern to viewers. Despite the show becoming tiresome (his episodes were hardly the most creative) for Tom after a SEVEN year run, even then, at his worst, Baker still was a more convincing, and a more entertaining Doctor than the next three regenerations at their best. I actually like The Twin Dilemma. Seeing Colin Baker's Doctor coping with the effect the Spectrox Toxaemia had on the regeneration (though not specified in the story, but how I rationalise it). It's a silly story, though I like the story of the twins and Azmael, but it still captured my imagination. But, I also LOVED the Star Trek Voyager episode Threshold, so take all this with a grain of salt.

Yeah, Sylvester wasn’t bad as a Chaplin-esq pantomime act, but the fans and new viewers needed something *_more_* to keep people watching. Especially once it started to go against Soap Opera staple Coronation Street in its same time slot. The Seventh Doctor’s reinvention as a darker Machiavellian planner was super necessary to keep the show alive.

I started the marathon in April 2011 and managed to finish a couple of weeks before the 50th anniversary special. There were only something like three (partially) animated stories so I filled the gaps with Loose Canon recons and BBC Audio CDs. The only stories I skipped were The Ice Warriors because the DVD was two years in the future and the VHS and CD editions out of print and expensive, Dimensions In Time and Scream of the Shalka because they were Impossible to find.

@@UranusMcVitieFish-yd7oq Yeah, I didn’t count Shalka and Dimensions in my watch thrus, but I moved hell and earth to import a copy of the 97 movie in America. I marked Oct 8 for when I finished the Classic series, and each doctor of the modern series took about a month. I know I finished Capaldi on NYE 2023 and I was done with Whittaker by February. Here is how I would fix the Jodie Whittaker and Gatwa Doctor messes. The 4th Doctor (T Baker) is being shown from the back looking at his console and looking at some of these episodes and shaking his head. He then says "No... This will not do. This timeline split has gone sideways and its endangering my existense and all future doctors". Then he fiddles with controls and its all erased and replaced with a new timeline where the Capaldi Doctor is regenerated into a teenager brainy doctor kid much like Adric or even Nissa. Then this nightmare can be put to rest as a bad terrible timeline by some unknown force that controls the Cybermen. New Monster threat are Draconian Lizards running from an even more terrible souless AI who threatens the Universe.

Lot's of shows have tried replacing their main character, sometimes through something almost exactly like regeneration, but only DW has succeeded with it. The "14th Doctor" is just the 10th Doctor in every single way, why are we pretending they are different incarnations? While we are about it, why are we pretending that the two shows are the same show? They are as different as TNG is from the original Star Trek. DW is the best show ever made, so if you can start watching other programmes from the start, why not DW? If the beginning of DW turns new viewers off, good riddance. Twin Dilemma was not badly received, otherwise the viewing figures would reflect that, fans just like revising history after being heavily influenced by Michael Grade's & Eric Saward's criticisms. Time & the Rani is a feast for the eyes & ears, if it's boring then everything is.
