Open propellers are no good for urban settings. Lilium all the way.

Cool. Regarding the propulsion, I think it's useful to also keep in mind the category: vectored thrust, lift+cruise, and wingless multicopter. (I'm sure you know all this, I'm putting it out there for others). The current EHang model is obviously a wingless multicopter, and I believe I have seen some reports that this type of design is likely to be eclipsed by the other two for multiple technical and economic reasons. These craft are essentially upscaled versions of consumer-grade drones: wings do not play a role in generating air lift during cruising, but they have multiple smaller motors unlike conventional helicopters. Lift+cruise have separate, dedicated propellers for vertical and horizontal movement, like the Beta Technologies Alia model (Vermont), or the EmbraerX Eve Urban Air Mobility (Brazil). I believe they're priming the Alia more for cargo operations at this time, but Eve is intended for passenger operations and, as far as I've seen, have a fairly advanced UTM infrastructure in the works as well. The Joby S4 and Lilium Jet are both vectored thrust, since their motors rotate to accomodate vertical or horizontal movement as needed. I believe the Archer Maker and Vertical VA-X4 are also technically considered vectored thrust, but since only a subset of the motors are vectored (and the remaining ones are fixed for vertical motion), I think of them more as hybrids, although again, I do not believe there is an industry-accepted "hybrid" definition at this time and it's more of a personal concept. Less common than the aforementioned categories but still technically part of the eVTOL space, there is a fourth category sometimes called eHelos, which are basically helicopters powered by electricity rather than fossil fuels. Examples include the Aquinea Volta (France) and the Jaunt Journey (Texas).

Love Joby and Lilium, Ehang is going to have trouble with only 2 seats and relying on autonomy is going to be a real issue. Archer is vapour at the moment and spec is not very encouraging, why would anyone choose this over Joby?

Why would it be a problem with only 2 seats if only 2 passengers is going from A to B? The average taxi trip is about 15 minutes with one passenger. For several areas of use 2 seats is sufficient.
@TeslaBulldotcom
@TeslaBulldotcom 3 жыл бұрын
2 passenger seats and no pilot, road to certification of autonomy is going to be difficult, majority of the others can fly the miles autonomously but with a pilot on board for backup this will prove out the systems, not an option for Ehang their aircraft isn’t getting certified with pilot controls on board
@peolse
@peolse 3 жыл бұрын
@@TeslaBulldotcom Ehang is making a manual controlled version of the 216, the 216M. This is intended for other areas of use, like the emergency services where the personell is going to want to control the vehicle themselves. And the first air-taxi-routes they are launching in china is probably going to be with this version and a pilot, just as an introduction to the public. I know, only transporting one passenger is kinda stupid, but hey, its a start! (And remember the thing I said that the average taxi trip is with only one passenger?) Anyway. This way Ehang is giving themselves a head start. We expect the certification for the 216M to come this year, and with this the establishing of the first routes. Ehang is a really exciting case IMO, at only $1B mcap.
@FGain
@FGain 3 жыл бұрын
@@peolse Your comparison to a ground taxi/uber service is flawed imo. A taxi ride can take you from any point A to any point B. That is why on average there are less than 2 passengers per ride. An air taxi will only be able to take you from hub A to hub B (the number of hubs in a city will be limited to key locations; airports, city centers, etc.). These routs will be busy and thus makes more economical sense to transport larger number of people. I feel that EHang is ahead of itself. Initially the more feasible and economical business model would be operating eVTOLs as a sort of inter/intra city busses (predetermined routs). As technology matures and costs drop the taxi like service (any rout can be requested) may become feasible.

I think shares of eVTOL companies will trade sideways for the next few years. Once they get close to mass production shares might start getting some traction. At the end of the day these companies need to prove that their business model is viable. In part 2 I will address this question. Thanks for watching!

We all must understand one thing... eVtol taxis will change the way we commute but it wont be as such a major game changer as we may think. At least not initially, These vehicles still only have the occupant capacity of your normal family sedan. So when it comes to commuting large numbers of people, the best it could ever do is loosly match the capacity of traffic on the ground. And that means a sky full of evtols at any given time, just like cars on highways. Their will be roads in the skies so to speak, just like normal commercial airline traffic flying specific routes. The difference being, a commercial airliner can carry a little a hundred or more passengers. So in the begging , supply will not be able to meet demand, and thus cost per ride will be fairly high. Only when enough aircraft starts meeting the demand will costs come down, IF such industry decides to do so, as it remains a luxury transport service. your in a personal aircraft, traveling to your specified location, in a timely manner. The cost will be much higher than other conventional means of travel for certain. And thus it will be a few decades before prices come down. many of these companies will see their products used by major airline companies, as a sub service to their mainstream routes. In fact they will be able to drastically cut costs buy using evtol to do Hops to non mainstream destinations, instead of using larger fleet aircraft to service such locations. Airlines of the past use to have such HOP service offerings , using older prop based aircraft as off shoot destination aircraft. But when those fleet of aircraft fell out of service and had to be decommissioned, they switched to other older but larger commercial aircraft, and those locations had to renovate their airports to accommodate the larger size aircraft. many of these smaller airports then being upgraded to international destination status. As they could now service larger aircraft, which was great for the costumers, but a cost hit for the airlines. Evtol could levy those costs.

I'm new to this today... About Vertical, which I've just heard about on UK radio news. Compare 3:17 in this video with kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5yzp4GPn6-grtk at 16:17 onwards (admittedly a few weeks more recent) timestamp 14:07. Two workable prototypes flown multiple times, whereas you say here no workable prototype yet. Can you unpick this apparent contradiction? Ben

@FGain 2 жыл бұрын
Welcome to the channel, Ben. The two prototypes that Vertical Aerospace has tested are VA-X1 and VA-X2 both are multicopters and have very little resemblance to the final form of the VA-X4, a vectored thrust aircraft . To the best of my knowledge no workable prototype of the VA-X4 exists as of yet. Thanks for watching and commenting!

To me Urban mobility or fly taxi is about 'urban' distance and affordability, how many normal people would need frequent long range travel over 100km or 90miles.50km should probably cover the distance from airport to its CBD. So far Ehang is a clear winner although it has the least fancy look.While most other company products are still doing take-off testing or remain on the image presentation, Ehang is already flying with passengers.

@PeterParker-wj3cr
@PeterParker-wj3cr 2 жыл бұрын
@@FGain From my understanding of the crash. They crashed the plane on purpose! Meaning they were testing the upper limits of the air craft to see how far they could push it. very similar to an automobile company crashing a car on purpose to study the impact damage!
@FGain
@FGain 2 жыл бұрын
@@PeterParker-wj3cr Yes, they were stress testing it, but I wouldn't say they crashed it on purpose. According to the incident report Joby experienced a component failure. In either case, accidents are part of aircraft development process. So I agree with you, Joby's crash needs to be taken in that context.

No question that eHang hasn't quite gotten the hang of the concept. It's best use would be as a parking lot shuttle for airports with extra bad surrounding traffic. Also good for amusement parks. Lilium still holds the most promise. Having six passenger seats means being able to alter the fare if needed to compete to keep jets full and be profitable against local competition. But when is that Qell meger going to be signed already? We're in the third quarter!

Since none of these aircraft exist, what are you comparing? Who has better CGI renderings of the non-existent aircraft or who can gin up more phony non-attainable specs?

Lilium's design doesnt look promising what a dead investment. Having a lot of fans on wings control surface looks like a lot of mess are gonna happen there I think they are gonna struggle there a lot and change their design several times. Battery to hoover and run this thing for 3-4 hours doesnt exist yet as far as I know. Who are the investors for this start up I am pretty sure that who invest this company are not engineers...
