It was always simple for me: Gen1-6 on 4:3 CRTs, Gen7-9 on 16:9 non-CRTs. Yes, some Gen6 games support EDTV, but the vast majority of people played them on SD-CRTs during the first half of the '00s. This fact, combined with the massive leap in online accommodations from gen6 to gen7, leads me to consider Gen1-6 truly retro and Gen7-9 truly modern. Radically different eras of gaming.
@mr.jamster8414 Жыл бұрын
I see it as four groups: 1-2: "dawn era" the kind of games they have pre-booted into hospital screens or as Easter eggs in certain apps. 3-4 "2d era" classic arcade style and adventure games from this era. When games first got actually fun and interesting. 5-7 "3d era" 3d games with a lot of depth and creativity, especially around 2004-2012 with so much unique things coming out like Spiderman 2, Skate, and Minecraft. (Yup) 8-9 "corporate era" when games got stale and loot boxes became a thing. GRAPHICS-wise, though, it really depends... Zero Tolerance and Beneath A Steel Sky are two games from the same year, one of them looks like dogshit on anything *but* a CRT, and the other is hand-drawn backgrounds that look good on anything.

Picked up a good CRTtv this week and it made such a massive difference when playing stuff like Goldeneye or Jet Force Gemini on N64. Hooking it up to an HDtv made the image so fuzzy that it was practically impossible to make out any in-game object that weren’t right in front of the player, now with the CRT it all looks crisp and clean (and old and pixelated, just the way I like it haha)

My go to explanation for why CRTs are better is the pipe in Mario. A CRT blurs the chekerboard pattern of light and dark greens into a third shade of green, creating a gradation effect that makes the pipe look round. That's why it was designed with that checkerboard effect. On an HD display, it doesn't make any sense. It's like watching a 3D movie without the glasses; it will look awful because the image was not created with the expectation that anybody would be watching it without the glasses.

I have a huge 35” CRT that I got for free from local Craigslist. I keep it in the bedroom corner sandwiched between to my 55” HDTV and my 20” monitor that I use for my Dreamcast. I use my CRT for my Atari 2600, NES, SNES, Genesis, GameCube, N64, PS1, PS2, PS2(pal), OG Xbox, and the Wii. My HDTV for my 360, and Xbox one. Using two switcher boxes, I have all hooked up ready to go and just swap out the wires for my Dreamcast light gun games. In our living room on the 65”4K, I have another 360, PS3, Xbox1X, Switch, Wii U, and PS4 pro with PSVR. It’s pretty sweet!!

Why i'm still love CRT TV beside good quality pictures for retro gaming ? You throw your controller to CRT = Controller breaks You kick your CRT = Your bone breaks Your CRT pictures messed up ? just punch and slap it few times and it will fix itself 👍 Meanwhile New state of the art 4K Smart TV broke simply just because your elbow accidentally hit the screen.

I regularly play Dreamcast and Gamecube (composite), then PS1, Genesis and Saturn (through HD Retrovision component cables) on my Sony 27” WEGA. I also have the Analogue NT Mini Noir, Mega SG, and Super NT. The Mini of course has an analog out option. I loved the way it looks over the DSub to component cables so much, that crazy me, my preferred way of playing on the MegaSG and SuperNT is with Analogue’s DAC converter on the WEGA as well. They look FANTASTIC! If you have an Analogue MegaSG or SuperNT and a CRT, I can’t recommend the DAC enough for that true, old school experience.

@@storminmormon8195 You pretty much have to learn how to repair them if you want to get extended life out of them. Lots of studying on electrical circuits, de/soldering, and practicing for many hours on junk boards before attempting to repair the real thing. Some of the unleaded solder used in later TVs melts at very high temps and makes it really hard to use a soldering iron without overheating the circuit boards in my experience.

CRT televisions capable of progressive scan are hard to find, and some of them have digital processing that adds lag, so a reliable way of doing 480p on a CRT is using a computer monitor! The only problem is how to connect a console to one. If you can get HDMI out of your old console you can then use a hdmi-to-vga adapter (with separate audio out in the adapter). In other cases you could use something like an OSSC or RetroTINK 2X Pro Multiformat scaler to input 480p to the scaler via the console's default component cables and output HDMI and then use the aforementioned HDMI-to-VGA adapter. Of course a computer monitor isn't natively 480p, but it should look much better that playing on a flat panel.
@RetroBirdGaming3 жыл бұрын
Great comment. Yeah, trying to do 480P on a CRT can be complicated. Thank you for writing all this out.

@Moshugaani3 жыл бұрын
@@bangerbangerbro Maybe some really old ones might have been 480p. But a ton of PC CRT monitors were usually something like 5:4 and 1024p. 480i has been standard for CRT televisions though, with some that can do 480p.
@bangerbangerbro3 жыл бұрын
@@Moshugaani Oh I didn't know that. Makes sense though I suppose as they are quite square. 640*480 and 1024*768 are both 4:3 though. Yeah 480i for 60Hz TVs.

It's simple enough, if you're going to play retro consoles, you should play them on a TV that the hardware and software was designed and optimized to play on. I have a SNES and PS2 and like to play those on CRT. Though I've used them on my HDTV before and it wasn't terrible.

At this point I've been hooking everything up to my 4k, but i've been painstakingly modding everything to do native digital via high quality (and always out of stock and expensive) hdmi mods. I was lucky enough to recently get the Mega sg and Super Nt. Those consoles are absolute winners so if you have the money and they're available, get them. I did a pluto board mod myself on my gamecube replacing the old digital port with HDMI and MAN, games look so clean. It's like playing them for the first time all over again. Just got my Og Xbox done with the Makemhz Mod. But that was a suffering of the mind. I got it working my self for a very short time, but it ended up not behaving. Ultimately i had to have the install done by a verified installer. As a result, for better or for worse, i have several xboxs and a couple of console shells giving me the opportunity to do something a little extra.

My CRT handles everything from PS2-era backward because my 4k TV doesn't play nice with them. NES is composite, while SNES/N64/GC/PS1/Dreamcast are all hooked up via S-video, and Sega Genesis/Wii/PS2/OG Xbox are all hooked up via component. Sega has a SCART connector because it can do RGB natively but I needed a SCART --->Component converter, but it was damn worth it!

Fun vid man, unfortunately I didn't have the good sense to hold onto the CRT we got for free (which supported 480p too). Definitely a "doh!" moment. For the older consoles HDMI solutions are the way I go (good cables, Analogue, and etc).

Any crt that supports 480p also has input lag. So maybe you can make yourself feel a little better knowing that one would of had lag. The crts that max out at 480i don't have any lag

Personally I have my PS1/2/3 and my Xbox and Xbox 360 hooked up to my JVC i'Art. I do it because I like the way it looks and the set is fairly new and has component and S-Video inputs. It's a very sharp set. The reason I don't have the HD systems hooked up to an HD TV is because my HD TV is an LG 4K OLED and the 1080p/720p just doesn't seem to look good to me on my OLED. I love my CRT and physical media in general and I'll probably never stop collecting for them. Great video by the way. Your reactions are hilarious.

It's best to play those early HD systems on a HDTV or 4KTV because those systems were designed for 16:9 HDTVs in mind. Some of their games don't even support 4:3 modes and therefore will add black bars on top and bottom of the screen if you set those consoles to 4:3 and sometimes the text can be hard to see too.

One thing that might be concerning on that setup would be input lag, the N64 and the Xbox use analog video, which on an HD CRT (as opposed to an SD CRT) converts that into digital video, which can add a significant amount of input lag, one dude measured his HD CRT having like 15ms of input lag with digital video and around 50ms for analog video. To help with this you might look into getting one of those outside converters like a Retrotink which does the processing for the TV and connects to the TV via HDMI, which should help significantly reduce the input lag, and they also have a deinterlacing feature which reduces flickering on 480i resolutions, although its solution is not perfect like it is on higher end equipment, but that costs like $300.
