I always do a mix of both, but mostly ancient fruit because the kegs take one week to be done and so does the regrowth, so I just add the starfruit in when it grows otherwise there's al this time in-between kegging

Yeah, if you can get a couple of junimo huts and plant ancient seeds around them with iridium sprinklers by the start of year 2 you are basically set for a really early perfection since once they are planted you don't have to do anything besides emptying the junimo huts day 1 of winter. It takes some work to have enough seeds for that though, particularly if you do the community center route. With the Joja route, you can have the greenhouse up and running for producing seeds already during summer 1 but with the community center, you don't get it up before until the middle of autumn and even with speed gro, it takes time before you get enough seeds. Meanwhile you can focus on completing the other things and building enough kegs to process all the fruits into wine. But you need some luck, preferably you get your fist ancient seed spring year 1 and plant it so you have a few fruits for seed already when you have the greenhouse up. The alternative is to go heavily on starfruit early on the get as much cash as fast as possible, it works too but it will cost you a lot more time. It will however speed up your mastery progression a lot. There is a third alternative and that is to start out with starfruits and once you gotten a million or so, use that money to create a truffle empire instead. That also require very little work while earning you a lot of money as long as you have enough auto-petters and the botanist trait.

Id say do a mix. Iirc with 1.6 you can get ahold of a crap ton of pots and place them in a shed for even more plants than the green house. Throw down as many ancient fruit as possible in pots in the shed, and then plant however many star fruit as you want for boosted profit, hell drop a few sheds around your farm and those ancient fruit will be a machine you have to swipe a scythe through once a week that'll make more money than you ever need year round

Once you totally filled the greenhouse and Ginger island farm and you have gotten 3 full large sheds of kegs so you can turn it all into wine you would probably first place a few junimo huts on the farm and place ancient fruits around them each spring. Once that is ready you could start this project but by then, you should already have earned the 10 million needed for the clock so what are you going to use the money for? Once you have reached perfection, you don't really need that much money.

I did the math on it not too long ago - because you can get 4 harvests per month, ancient fruit surpasses starfruit once you hit the 4th season of having it. You can get 12 harvests of starfruit per year vs 16 from ancient fruit. Once you subtract out the cost of starfruit seeds from your final product (presumably, wine), ancient fruit comes out ahead by a little bit. If you aren't using deluxe speed grow for the starfruit or if for some reason you're selling the raw crop, ancient fruit beats starfruit by a lot more. So which you choose also depends on how much you're able to scale up/for how long you need to do the end game money grind

Also people are mostly discussing ginger island and the greenhouse, which makes sense, but on the main farm, which is arguably the most space you have, you get a whole extra season of harvest for the ancient fruit. On the main farm it’s actually 2-3 harvests of starfruit to 8 harvests of ancient fruit (assuming you plant early spring).

Don't forget with raisins added to the game now. Ancient really destroys star fruit with the chance of double harvest on every crop. Since ancient fruit regrows and star fruit doesn't there's more potential to double your crop gains from ancient fruit. Mensing more wines and jams and what not mensing more money than star fruit

This is the way. Ancient fruit grows on my farm. I only need to plant it once and let the junimos and sprinklers take care of it all. Then I just plant starfruit in the greenhouse as it’s easy maintenance to replant and harvest and it’s more than enough to keep the kegs in the basement going for iridium starfruit wine

When you're brand new, dead broke and have absolutely nothing, that first ancient seed is a blessing. Multiply it and use it. But if it's a bit later in the game and you go the money, star fruit is your big answer (just make sure you have a greenhouse and sprinklers!)

I've done a lot of mathing with this, and one has to remember that the 1st harvest of ancient fruit can also be sped up with speed-gro, so I factored that in as well. Ancient fruit is better profits, actually. Net profit, not gross profit, and per a 1 year calculation. I will utilize starfruit when my ancient fruit seeds are being multiplied though.

I use coffee and am making tripple shot espresso. I have a big coffee farm on Ginger Island and a little in my greenhouse. It takes very little time in kegs, which give you more runs of coffee. Also, because you get a lot of beans, you can always expand your farm and/or distribute the beans over the days, when they are not ready to harvest yet.

@@manlopogo Okay. I calculated everything you have to know. Having 78 plants in my greenhouse, which gave me 313 total beans. Having 237 plants on Ginger Island, which gave me 942 total beans. I now have 1255 beans, and 64 kegs. With 5 beans in 1 keg, it takes around 4 batches. Leaving them in a keg takes (theoretically) 2 hours. Starting the brewing at exactly 1 pm , I needed till 10:40 pm, to get all beans into coffee. 4 beans were not useful, because of quality and not enough. With selling 83 espressos, I made a profit of 37.350 G. Some things to add: I travelled with the Ginger island Obelisk on my farm, and wasn’t using any speed buffs or etc. And after around 10 days growing your coffee, it regrows every 2 Days.

Don’t forget about using the Garden Pots and Deluxe Retaining Soil. Things like coffee are better to put in pots as they can be planted anywhere practically. I always save the Greenhouse for Ancient Fruit as it can produce through all four seasons, and they cannot be planted in pots.

@ that’s what I like to do. Also, keep in mind, garden pots in sheds are another great way to keep regrowing crops all year round. Especially crops that have uses beyond selling. Grapes for raisins. Coffee as mentioned. Corn for oil. Crops that don’t have easy to buy seeds (strawberries, summer squash, broccoli) Hops of course also an option. Iridium scythe gives you range of 2 for harvest. Therefore you’ll be able to double stack pots in the shed.

That's a huge waste of money. A starfruit wine sells for over 3000. If you make seeds you get 2 on average with a value of 500 each, so you save 1000. So by putting it into the seedmaker you're wasting about 2000 gold per starfruit

I think most people start out with starfruits and slowly move to ancient fruit. The reason for that is that time is money. There are cases where starfruit is far superior, like if you also set up a fairy dust production line to turbo age it casks . That will maximize your earnings each week but it is also super work intensive and you ain't doing much else that way. I think either works fine, but I tend to move more and more towards ancient fruit since it lets me spend more time on other things like farming Qi quests and skull caverns. Starfruit is more or less a must to afford getting in quick income fast when you need it. Just filling the greenhouse with starfruit as soon as it is built is a great way to get in enough cash to set things up for the perfection run, paying for upgrading the farm to make it ready for the big Gs and you will very quickly get the mastery points with it as well.

@@ArchaeoMal You don't think that makes sense? The more thing you spend on a single activity, the less you have for anything else. But there is of course the fact that setting up an ancient fruit production means you will spend a long time getting started where you use all the crops for seed earning you nothing so if you are are speedrunning, starfruits might still be your best alternative. There isn't super much you need from the caverns for perfection after all and if you know when and where all the fish will be, that lowers the time you spend there a lot as well. If I am going for farming to make money (instead of for instance truffles), I tend to start with a full greenhouse of starfruits as well as ginger island once it is unlocked and then I move over to ancient fruit as time passes but I am not sure if that is the most profitable thing to do. But then, I don't really set a specific time for perfection, if I would then I probably would go Starfruit as long as I allow myself access to the Wiki (no way I remember where things like all the fish can be caught).

I have a giant field of like 500 spaces on my island. I fill it all up with starfruit, then grow it all. I turn around 500 into seeds to replant my field again. I use the other starfruit for my kegs. In between I switch between starfruit and ancient fruit wine. Ancient fruit wine gets sold as is. And I age starfruit wine. And sell if I have more than enough to refill all my casks... I have NEVER bought starfruit, I grew them all from my single free seed I got from the museum. Seedmaker are OP😂😂

I've noticed that people don't value the labor cost in these crop calculations beyond anecdotal preference. I like to think in terms of gold per action, so hoeing, watering for the first time, fertilizing, planting, and harvesting are all actions. This puts ancient fruit way out ahead. However, once I include casks (I haven't done the math), my gut says starfruit is worth growing just enough to keep your casks fully stocked, as my other metric beyond labor efficiency is space efficiency, with starfruit just being more space effiei per farm tile, per keg, and per cask.

The real problem lies with time management. When me and my friend play stardew valley we usually end up creating a massive field of ancient fruit spanning around 60% of the farmable area in the first farm layout. At the same time we fully use the ginger island space and the greenhouse. Now apart from those there is also the processing. It used to be only kegs which made it a little easier since they took longer to turn the fruit into wine. Nowdays we have 4 sheds half and half with preserving bins and kegs + the entire quarry with kegs😅. You can see now how all of this cant be dealt with in one day, let alone by one person. So, in the end, ancient fruit is the only possible crop candidate that fits within the time frame because of its growth cycle and the ability to grow throughout all seasons. (This is all without any speedgrow btw)

Deluxe Retaining Soil plus ancient fruits is just automatic money after one week. No need to waste time watering, re-planting, or buying seeds. It takes longer to efficiently set-up, but I think it’s worth it in the end game

Starfruit Wine does sell for more, but it takes twice as long to grow, two weeks vs Ancient Fruit which regrows every week. That difference puts the profit per day at about 79 for Ancient Fruit vs 54 for Starfruit (235 vs 160 when processed into wine). Of course, Ancient Fruit does take an extra full season to grow but the higher profit per day makes up for that in only a few seasons.

I like to do a little of both. Ancient fruit is grown and sometimes goes in half my kegs. Star fruit goes into all of my other kegs and will go into the casks along with goat cheese (each crop of SF is rotated so I always have something going in and coming out). Ancient fruit takes too long to age vs SF so it gets sold right after it is bottled.

I do a bit of starfruit for the cellar, and otherwise I do ancient fruit. I once planted almost my complete standard farm with ancient fruit, by prepping as much soil as possible with qi fruit in winter and replacing a patch at the time with hyper speedgro and fiber seeds when I collected those. I ended up with 1300 ancient fruit plants, that I either used to fill the kegs with, if I had no starfruit left, sold directly (if gold quality) or put in the dehydrators.

For Mastery, I went with Star Fruit, as it's quicker for experience. However, Ancient Fruit is the crop of choice, ESPECIALLY if you get the Iridium Scythe. Before Star Fruit was able to be harvested slightly faster, but now, that speed is equalized with the Iridium Scythe.

On co-op I find Starfruit to be better (although it requires more work). The host can have the Artisan profession and other player(s) can have Agriculturist, so it is one Starfruit harvest each 8 days with just Deluxe Speed-Gro (which is cheap and permanent on the tiles after the first harvest) alongside having multiple cellars to use and more farming exp for everyone's mastery too.

Ancient Fruit passively makes me money while they remain solely in the greenhouse. Star fruit occupies every tillable soil in the Ginger Island. As for the main farm soil, It's mostly just flowers to make the place pretty and functional for honey harvest.

That was my 0.25 profit margin file, anyway Plus a full cellar with 189 casks of starfruit wine, harvested with a fast iridium hoe, but it takes so long to age it doesn't make much of a difference

Starfruit wine may be more profitable individually, but for ancient fruit you only have to buy the seeds once and continue to gain profits without spending more making it infinitely more profitable.

I definitely prefer the lower maintenance of ancient fruit, especially not needing to go replenish seeds.

My last playthrough before 1.6 I actually would have said pineapple for my set up. I tend to do garden pots in sheds, instead of outside fields. Ancient fruit is a no go in pots, and on my mobile I couldn’t reuse the deluxe water retaining soil so I don’t ever have to water. Starfruit required me to replant the retainer for water also, making it too costly since I had over a dozen sheds running. Pineapples were my solution. Retaining soil once at the start of the plant, water, then harvest when it’s ready. They regrow and the retains stuff stays so I don’t have to replace that. I had two pineapple sheds for every one shed of kegs. It was awesome! Currently though, pre shed stage, ancient fruit wins.

Early-Mid game I consider availability, affordability and convenience which may or may not include either starfruit or ancient fruit. Late game I have all the money I could ever need, and optimization is no longer as important, to me, as variety. Interestingly, while I tend to avoid low gold/d crops in the early game, by late game I'm more than happy to grow fields of garlic and parsnips

During summer I'll always grow a big batch of starfruit and keg it with my quarry set up but otherwise I prefer ancient fruit. Im not looking to min/max the game to its fullest and since ancient fruit is every 7 days that means that I can have a set day of the week for harvesting and kegging it. No running to the desert over and over for the seeds either which is fine if you want but for me I'm fine without.

i just started a new file after my year 8 perfection + 100m gold file, and tbh i am always broke until like year 3 anyways... it kind of just depends on what you want to do with your time at that point. you can deluxe retaining soil an entire field of ancient fruit or you can deluxe speed grow starfruit. by the time i'm not constantly broke and actually able to constantly afford starfruit seeds, i usually already have at least the greenhouse full of ancient fruit and it's really just easier to keep the weekly ancient fruit + wine kegs routine. but i always do both anyway though, like cmon starfruit are just so visually pleasing 😂

For me, I tend to do Star fruit on the farm only in summer, and then ancient fruit on ginger island. My reasoning is that you can produce more ancient fruit than star fruit by using deluxe retaining soil. When you remove the need for sprinklers and only need to wait 7 days, ancient fruit comes out on top. However, while I'm doing the qi quests and getting resources for all that fertilizer, I stay with star fruit

Ginger island for starfruit and everywhere else for ancient fruit since starfruit is season dependent where as ancient fruit grows all 3 growing months

I'm currently in fall of year one on my first playthrough. I just want the greenhouse man. lol I have starfruit seeds for some reason. I never planted them because it was too late into the season and i am glad I forgot about them when fall came around.

Ancient fruit in the fields, starfruit in greenhouse and pots in barns. In the field starfruit gives 3 yields during summer, ancient fruit gives 9 yeilds. For SF you loose 3 days for planting, for AF not even half a day. For AF you need to make seeds and loose a part of your crops, SF costs 400 per seed. It just ends up on AF because its massively easier and faster. And the several million gold you get from AF wine is enough for anything in the game. If im thinking between 2 mil and 6 mil gold, I really dont care. 2 mil is enough to buy out perfection in several seasons.

ancient fruit in seasonless zones personally, and i harvest with the scythe. real time is more valuable than game time, and I think this optimises that better.

Currently I’m using my greenhouse for ancient fruit and my Ginger Island farm for Starfruit. No real rhyme or reason for it. I just like having both

When accounting for growth time and seed costs ancient fruit are just strictly more profitable once you’ve set it up. Always go for ancient fruit, it makes more money straight up

@@ArchaeoMal No it will not since ancient fruit win is worth 2310g and star fruit wine is worth 3150. Ancient fruit grows every week and starfruit grows every two weeks. Ancient fruit is just strictly better

Lategame player with 200mil gold- I prefer Starfruit. I have 4 junimo huts on my farm and plant one plot with ancient fruit and the rest I use mainly in summer for Starfruit. You can get 4 starfruit harvests with optimal fertilizer and I usually plant my free spaces with it outside of the huts. These days I'm not so crazy about profits but the starfruit from just one season would last me till winter processing in the kegs, at which point I'd swap to the ancient fruit from the single plot. But I'm not a minmaxxer as I also use the field in fall to plant sweet gem berries! Since I grow starfruit on the actual farm my greenhouse and a bit of ginger island have rare seeds growing all year long so in fall I can plant 1,500+ in fall and w the best fertilizer it's a good chunk of change. I also grow fairy roses for fairy dust to speed up aging in the casks. I actually do like to farm in the farming sim game haha ancient fruit is fine though!

Ancient fruit is better because u can plant it in the spring and it will grow all the way till winter - whereas star fruit is a summer only crop
