This has been a valuable video to watch and is SOOO informative. Thank you. My agent said he has all of his clients on Plan F and only 6 people on plan G. Hmmm??!!! I can verify the truth of this information. I spent almost 2 months going thru the Medicare Manual, typing up my own analysis on the whole subject, and came up with the same result. Signed up 2 months before I had an accident on my front steps, they had to operate on my ankle - and take me off of my coumedin, which is a no-no, and I had my second small stroke. I would be stuck on Plan F is I had joined it. Your a good man Chris.

Mr. Westfall, I am just starting Medicare and my agent did a great job directing me to the right product. Now you have "Clearly" showed how important that first decision is on the lifetime cost. My father retired from McDonnell Douglas Aircraft and they had full insurance coverage for about six years until they were told that the company was going to discontinue this retirement benefits and offered them $100 per month added to their pension. No one explained that they should use this for a Medigap plan at that time. Fortunately, my parents did have some major medical situations but they had money in the bank to cover their short falls. The baby-boomer generation is not that fortunate and has basically only social security income to rely on which is not much in most cases. So your excellent presentation is totally spot on and very helpful. Thank you so much for this clarification.

This video does a great job at explaining the difference in F and G, but deciding what company to go with is also very important. Cigna had a really low priced plan G, but I went with AARP's United Healthcare, because I didn't trust Cigna. I didn't trust Cigna because the salesman was way too pushy. It is really difficult to decide which company to go with because even the reputable ones such as Aetna and United Health have had little scandals here and there over payments for Hospital care, etc..

This is very helpful and clearly communicated. However, it is entirely about price. The Plan G company used as an example a note comes up in your video showing that for 2017 the Plan G deductible increased to $183 from $147.That's a nearly 25% increase. Nor is there any attention paid to how different companies handle their claims. I've heard some horror stories about people not getting the service they expected from various claims departments. Late or no payment for various procedures. I think it would be very useful to examine the actual provision of services promised.

My understanding is on plan G you pay the first $147 of your doctor bills and after that Medicare pays 80% and plan G pays 20%. At the 5:30 mark it sounds like Medicare pays 80% and you pay 20% until you have met the $147 amount. Which is correct?

Mr Westfall your video has been the best in explaining about the very confusing plans but the problem I have is not with the Part A,B or D all of these are covered with Medicare and Tricare for vets and family, my questions is where is the information on Dental and Vision coverage which I deem a major problem espically if you need help in paying out of pocket. No one talks about these two items, most health problems stems from your gums and eyes. Medicare says they just cover the basic preventive care but what if you need more, like I need root canal which is almost $1000.00 so it is a choice of paying for this or rent or food so what choice do I make? Feedback from anyone.

Those are only nine states. If not, you are subject to the overcharges (15%) that doctors can charge you if they do not accept Medicare as payment in full. This could add 15% to all of your bills, on top of the co-payments Plan N requires and the Part B deductible. Would be happy to show you what's available. Ok, now that Plan C and Plan F is going away, there will be no Part B deductible’s being offered. So where are the new retires with health problems going to go. Probably Plan G don’t you think? So what’s that going to do for rate increases?

Either Plan G or Plan N. It depends on exactly where you live. Would be happy to compare for you. If you are not a "frequent flyer", you should definitely consider Plan N, as the rate increases are much more stable going into and beyond 2020. See: PlanNMedicare.org for an explanation.

When I use the Medicare Plan Finder, I see that in my area Plan G is only available with Attained Age pricing, which I’ve read ends up costing more over the long haul. (I'm turning 65, my dad lived until 87, and I take much better care of myself!) Would Plan F with Community or Issue-Age pricing be better than Plan G with Attained Age over my expected 20 years?
@ChristopherWestfall8 жыл бұрын
The Medicare Plan Finder tool is best (ONLY) used for comparing Medicare Advantage plans (from bad to worse.) It is NOT a comprehensive or even accurate tool for finding available Medicare Supplement plans. I pay $10,000 a year for the best quote engine that shows all plans. The government's tool is only those plans that submit their info to that tool, and that is not comprehensive at all. To your question, the difference in actuarial theories would leave the layman to believe that one solution is better than another. In reality, I can tell you from watching all three models over 20 years that the all go up. The only difference is that they blame the rate increase on differing calculations. One might point to age as a consistency in the rate increases (attained age) while others blame medical cost inflation for their very-similar-tracking rate increases. Both have rates increases as frequently and one is not better than another. The best source of information on this is the rate increase history as experienced by an agent that has been in the industry for a long time (10+ years ) and has contracts and clients with nearly all the companies. This is another good reason to use an independent agent for this research, especially since the cost of doing so is $0. If you'd like a second opinion, you can call me at 1-800-729-9590. I'd be glad to tell you what I've seen over the years with the carriers (all of them) in your market.

Christopher, not sure if I totally understand what is being said, I'll listen to it again. If someone already has plan A & B, and I think the B plan costs 121.00 a month, does the payment for the G plan include the pmt for the B plan, and all that is required is the out of pocket $147 deductible? So roughly that person pays $119 per mo. plus a one time annual fee of $147. thanks
@ChristopherWestfall8 жыл бұрын
James, you're confusing Parts and Plans. You must have PART A (hospital) and PART B (non-hospital) to have MEDICARE. This leaves you with paying roughly 20% of all of the bills beyond Medicare. The SUPPLEMENTs are PLANS. Plan G has just the small deductible (which is currently $166 and subject to change each year in small increments). So, after paying the premium for Part B (to the government) and premium for PLAN G (insurance company), you only have a tiny one-time-per-year deductible, then everything else is covered. Anything legitimate, of course! Happy to help explain if you want to call us at 1-800-729-9590. Our service is free and we save seniors A LOT of money because we can search ALL of the plans available. Thanks for writing - Chris

@lindawall11747 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the information you have provided. So, to recap (to make sure I have it correctly) this what I understand ~ I'm a 1st time (newbie) to medicare, I would like to get Plan G. My employer is paying my benefits until April 1. I am already receiving social security so I am automatically enrolled into Part A & B. I will turn 65 in April this year, I live in California. My question, is the $183 I pay for the Part B 20% for 2017? Is this the supplemental plan premium or deductible?
@ChristopherWestfall7 жыл бұрын
I suggest going onto the Social Security website to make sure you're all set to start Part B on April 1. You can do this here: www.ssa.gov/medicare/ You will have a monthly premium to have Part B. That is taken out of your Social Security Income. That is based on income, too, so if you are higher income, you will pay more than most. Then you have the $183 deductible (for 2017) and then you would be responsible, after that one-time-per-year deductible, for 20% of each charge with no limit. This is where the Medicare Supplement would come in. The supplement pays that 20% cost with no limit. As long as the visit, surgery, procedure, etc. is a Medicare-approved claim, it is automatically paid by the supplement. There are no claim forms to file, no approval procedures, it's just paid automatically for you. So, with Plan G, the only thing you're going to pay, in addition to the premium each month for the insurance, is the one-time-per-year deductible of $183. After you reach $183 out of pocket in bills, the supplement then takes over, again, with no limit on how much it will pay for you. Also, without a supplement, you must pay the Part A deductible IF you are admitted to the hospital. That would be a cost, without a supplement paying it for you, of $1,316 per admission (not paid more than once each 60 days). So, the supplement protects your fixed income by avoiding coming out of pocket for the Part A cost and the 20% costs of Part B. We can look at all Supplement options for you if you'll call me at 1-800-729-9590 24 hours a day. - Chris Westfall E-mail: Christopher@MedicareByPhone.com
@paragshah27426 жыл бұрын
Thank you Christopher. Appreciate your help in making me understand. I have one question, is this premium on top of what you have to pay for Medicare Part-B ($135) per month? Hope you can answer this question?
@ChristopherWestfall6 жыл бұрын
Yes, in every case, supplemental insurance is on top of the cost of original Medicare. A & B = Original Medicare Supplement sits on top of that and pays the 20% of costs that original Medicare does not pay. Happy to go over this in detail as to what is available.. reach me at 1-800-729-9590. thank you.

When Plan D & F are grandfathered in 2020, will the people enrolled in them get an SEP?
@ChristopherWestfall7 жыл бұрын
If someone is "grandfathered" into a plan, that means nothing happens to them. They can keep that plan. A Special Election Period (SEP) is a way out for someone who has suffered an adverse action (lost a job, lost a plan). So no, there will be no SEP for those on Plan F. Plan D is not going anywhere. Plan D does not have first-dollar coverage. Only Plan F and Plan C will no longer be available for those NEW TO MEDICARE as of 01-01-20. It is best, for anyone now or then, to be on Plan G, in my humble opinion after seeing thousands of quotes from around the country. - Chris 1-800-729-9590.
@marybouellette99057 жыл бұрын
yes but those plans are more than likely to go up to a greater degree than before as they will no longer be enrolling anyone else to help share the costs. That to me is adverse. Sorry I meant plan C on that one.

+Peggy Smith We "sit down" with each of our clients, too. The only difference is you don't have to go anywhere. We use screen share technology where you can see us, see the companies, the rates, and the plans right on your screen, on your timetable, LIVE. I have been licensed in KY for a long time and have hundreds of clients there and know the best plans. See, sometimes when you have an agent have to drive to your house, they sometimes don't give you the lowest price because their commission is a percentage of the premium. The fact that they have to come to you, or have a brick and mortar building that you can come to, leads some to have different loyalties. Since I can tell you have a computer, give our method a try. You will find ALL of the companies compared and all of your questions answered easily. And, you can check my license with the Kentucky Dept. of Insurance. I am wondering if it would be in my best interest to select an advantage plan with prescription coverage and apply for a Medicare Plan G plan. What do you think is best for me as I don't want to pay monthly for a Part D plan and a Medigap plan as well. Thanks for your time.
@ChristopherWestfall8 жыл бұрын
You cannot both apply for an "Advantage" plan AND have a Medicare Supplement. When you sign up for an "Advantage" plan, you are leaving original Medicare and cannot use a Supplement. The best coverage, if you can qualify for it or are in Open Enrollment (turning 65 or Starting Part B for the first time) is to have original Medicare, a Supplement, and a stand-alone Part D plan customized as the best plan for you. Please see this important video on the topic of Medicare Advantage plans: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHa8i6h3fceBmJI

I thought that you can change downward from any original medicare plan so F to G would not be a problem even with existing conditions. Also, you can change per the birthday rule, within 30 days after your birthday without an exam review, etc. Can you comment on this?

What states do not allow excess charges on Medicare Part B?
@ChristopherWestfall8 жыл бұрын
Jay, The law, referred to as the Medicare Overcharge Measure (MOM), was adopted by Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Rhode Island and Vermont. In these states, doctors working with Medicare must take Medicare Assignment and cannot charge Part B excess charges.

Mr. Westfall, Are the rates the same for married couples. Would we just figure double the costs? We are both turning 65 in late 2017 . Sept. and Nov.
@ChristopherWestfall7 жыл бұрын
No, not at all. The policies are individual policies where males and females are rated differently, except in Arkansas where both are the same. Many companies give a household discount, however, for having two policies.. Happy to tell you the rates. 1-800-729-9590 or write me at christopher@medicarebyphone.com

Hello Mr. Westfall. Can you give me some guidance in regards to my mom. She is 66 years old and has been in an nursing home for several years. She has been on both Medicare and Medicaid. The state of Texas will no longer pay her Medicare Part B premiums. What does this mean? Do I need to just find her a Medicare Part B? She gets Medicare Part D at a zero cost. Dawn
@ChristopherWestfall8 жыл бұрын
Part B is Part B through Medicare. There are no other versions. The question in your situation, based on her income, is WHO is going to be paying the government for it. It sounds like it is now up to her, which means it will be either deducted from her Social Security income (typical) or if she is not drawing Social Security income, it will be billed to her in quarterly increments, which has to be paid. As she is not in Open Enrollment, she will not qualify, now, for a Medicare Supplement plan because she would need to be underwritten based on health questions. The first question, always, is whether or not she is in a nursing home. The fact that she is means she cannot qualify. She could, though, depending on availability, get a Medicare Advantage plan if available in her county. You can check with Medicare on those plans available by going to Medicare.gov or by calling them at 1-800-633-4227. I suggest calling late at night, as there is less competition for their attention.

Medigap plan F is supposed to be gone as of January 1, 2020?

Not available to those who became eligible for Medicare after 1/1/20.

Is this info still current 4 years later? Thank you!
@ChristopherWestfall6 жыл бұрын
Yes, except things have gotten worse for Plan F. In 2020, no one new to Medicare can purchase Plan F any longer. This is due to the "MACRA" law passed last year. This means that Plan F will have higher and faster rate increases, once less and less people can purchase it. Plan G is an even better buy.

I am aged 66 and currently covered by my employer's health plan. I also have Medicare Part A only. When I retire next year (Sept 2019), I will obviously obtain Part B coverage + a supplemental plan. Since I have never had Medicare Part B Coverage, will I be able to qualify for a Plan G supplemental policy?
@ChristopherWestfall6 жыл бұрын
Yes, your Open Enrollment period is triggered by your Part B start date. There will be no health questions in your case. There is an employer verification form you will need to print and send to your employer to validate the fact that you have had credible coverage this whole time. That will prevent the Medicare and Part D penalties. We have those forms we can e-mail out - please consider allowing us to search options for you. 1-800-729-9590. Thanks for writing! - Chris

Our insurance company charges about $3 more for Plan G than for F. IS IT STILL WORTH TO GET G? They say we can change plans any month, with no pre-existing penalty. I am totally confused. Just turned 65 and this is first choice.

+Mountain Cabin You are DEFINITELY with the wrong insurance company. I suggest calling our office for the best quote on Plan G at 1-800-729-9590. Remember, with Medicare Supplements, you can change ANY time of the year, not just during the end of the year.

Does Plan F AARP cover prescriptions?
@ChristopherWestfall8 жыл бұрын
No, Plan F does not cover prescription drugs, from ANY company. Prescription drugs are covered under PART (not plan) D (for drugs). Please see this video which will help with the Part D drug plan. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f52TfZqMn9F7rKc You might note, AARP has NEVER sold Plan G because it is not as profitable to them as Plan F is. However, in 2020, when Plan F can no longer be sold to new Medicare beneficiaries, they will HAVE TO offer Plan G at that time!

A question slightly related to the video... I noticed that Aetna (underwritten by American Continental Insurance Company) in Nevada has two sets of rates for their Medicare Supplemental plans (www.aetnaseniorproducts.com/ssi/assets/pdf/OOC/INDV_NV.pdf) - 'Preferred' and 'Standard'. The 'Standard' rates are generally (for F/G) about 10% higher than the 'Preferred' rates. The footnotes indicate 'If applying during Open Enrollment or Guaranteed Issue Period, use Preferred Rates' which I assume mean they apply to those who just entered Part B while the higher rates apply to "switchers" (an option mentioned in your video). Is that correct? Also, do the higher rates apply to "switchers" for the rest of their lives (assuming they don't switch again!).
@ChristopherWestfall7 жыл бұрын
Preferred is non-smoker. Standard is smoker. In Nevada, open enrollment folks are only rated as non-smokers. That's why. :)

Based on past history, does the deductible under plan G increase each year or every few years?
@ChristopherWestfall7 жыл бұрын
You can see the rate increase history with this graph image: www.seniorsavingsnetwork.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/PartBDeductibleHistory.jpg Remember, Plan F has the deductible included in the premium, too, which is only part of the reason that Plan F goes up in rate increases faster than Plan G ever will. Also, remember that Plan F is scheduled to be no longer available January 1, 2020 to new Medicare eligible seniors. This means it will be a closed risk pool (no one aging in can buy it) and that means faster rate increases on a stale "block of business" as they call it.
@ChristopherWestfall7 жыл бұрын
I now see that the graph was incorrect at the end.. for 2017 it is $183, down from what was originally proposed (over $220).
@Lysander-Spooner7 жыл бұрын
In reading through the comments it seems people do not quite get that Medicare supplements are exactly the same from each company as mandated by law. Probably because most of us are used to the employer provided plans that had all kinds of options and you learn that your Blue Cross plan is not the same as Joe's at another company.

If you can't get F, I would get N. If you have health issues and go to the doctor a lot, you're stuck with the high price of G.

@ChristopherWestfall7 жыл бұрын
You can apply for the Medigap plan six months before the month you turn 65. This serves to lock in the rate, while you're still not paying for the plan which does not kick in until the first of the month of your birthday. But, locking in the rate early can be a good thing. You can still change your mind any time before it starts and even 30 days AFTER it starts using the "free look provision" in insurance. The actual plan starts when Part B starts, which is the 1st of the month you're actually turning 65.

Mr. Westfall, do you recommend locking in a plan 6 months before turning 65 during the guarantee issue window, or waiting until a month or two prior? Why?
@ChristopherWestfall7 жыл бұрын
Would you agree that the price of milk, for instance, will never likely be as low as it is right now? So if you decided to make a purchase of milk at today's prices vs. the price years from now, TODAY would be the better price. Same with Medicare Supplements. They do not go down in price, they go up over time. Companies file rate increases and then implement those increases at various odd times of the year. There is a very good chance that, by locking in the rate at the earliest opportunity, which is six months prior to your birth month, you could avoid a rate increase, yes. At any event, the most important determining factor as to whether or not you will get the full picture of what is available, because all of the plans ARE standard, is to go through a fully independent broker, like me! When you combine 1) Shopping early (understanding that you are not making monthly premiums until it starts, anyway, and 2) Going through an independent broker, you have the best opportunity to save the most money now and in the future. Also if you develop any health problems they are covered but if you change later your health problems are in consideration and you will pay dearly. Keep your coverage and don't stop it. you are around 65 so they won't charge you more for preexisting conditions unless you change later

If the plan g ded. is 147, what is 183 ded. for. I don't understand.
@ChristopherWestfall7 жыл бұрын
The numbers change every few years. When the video was made, the Part B deductible was $147. It is now $183 and at some point in the future it will change again. The concept is the same. Plan G is still a much better value than Plan F except in very small regions of the country, including Florida and parts of California. - Chris 1-800-729-9590.

Nice discussion of F & G tradeoffs. I was wondering why it seemed to make no sense to pick F in any markets I looked at for a family member and hadn't realized the 'terminated retiree health plan' situation. It seems the disparity is likely to become worse and worse as F is sunsetted and has NO new entrants and the existing F policy holders get older and older and those that are still healthy and can pass medical underwriting flee to G - leaving an increasingly unwell pool of F policy holders. A bit of a death spiral (at least until the insurance companies decide that it's not worth maintaining F as the number of 'trapped' policy holders die off or just can't pay the premiums anymore and mercifully cancel them all).
