Which Is Better, Pop Up or Curb Hole, Proper Discharge of French Drain

For Best Discharge, A Curb Hole is Recommended. Pop up works if you cannot core or cut the curb, but you will loose fall of 3" inches.
If your french drain is runs level, a pop up will really slow down the water. Much better to keep your fall and drill the curb!

Great job. Wonder if you could have slid a 3 inch pipe as a liner directly into the curb hole. There might be a reducer connector from 4 inch to 3 inch, then connect a 3 inch pipe. You hay always get a little bit of soils from the other side of the curb. But great job.

Chuck, you've convinced me that I need to R&R collapsed El Cheapo Black Flexible Corrugated pipe with Schedule 40 - 4" pipe. A major downspout overflows at 20 yr old black flex drain pipe during rain....and saturates 12 x 8ft mulch bed trapped between driveway, sidewalk & slab house. In winter my driveway rises up 1-2" because Fall Rain trapped under driveway freezes.....source is failed drainage. Groan - I'll need to dig / trench at least 50 ft including under sidewalk. But when it's done....water 💦 problem solved!

What do we use in neighborhoods with no curbs? Pop up or open pipe into the ditch? Problem with the open pipe is once the ditch fills the discharge pipe would be under the water...Problems I see with pop up are one, malfunction, and two, so much water coming out, some goes to ditch but the rest just floods the front of my yard....Biggest hault on my drainage project is where to go with it.....lol

If you're carrying water you always use solid pipe. This is because it won't clog and self-cleans itself out. In this case he's already collected water by the roof and gutters and wants that water goneeee. I wouldn't have used the black corrugated that the original guy used either because it clogs up very quickly. Solid pipe is the best way to go.

The pressure will cause it to drain if you have good fall. As long as the (flooded) curb is lower than the top of the drain where the downspout ends the water will exit, although slower than if the street level was dry.

If I could remove the 90 degree elbow, I'm sure it would empty the basin properly and move the water in a more thorough way. I'm a novice. Check with your local governing authorities about connecting to your street's subdrainage tile for sump pump connections. Gutter/downspouts should not cross easement or right-of-way lines per international building code and should remain 10' back from property lines. If a pop up is unavoidable and is roughly 10' away from home foundations a smooth wall Perforated PVC Sewer and Drain Pipe ASTM D2729 would allow drainage water from within the pipe to soak out of the pipe into the surrounding grade. This will help prevent standing water in the pipe with the use of a french drain set up along the perforated section of the pipe. Check surrounding grade by a percolation test to decide on the size of trench for proper drainage.

why is it not standard in the US to have roof downpipes connected directly to the curb? I see a lot of downpipes in these videos discharging directly onto the ground right next to foundations. Here in Australia and New Zealand it is standard practice to connect all roof and driveway drains directly to the street gutter.
@sofjanmustopoh7232
@sofjanmustopoh7232 2 жыл бұрын
Actually any water that goes over the curb would go into storm drain . So common practice is too spread the roof water over your yards first. Then whatever couldn’t be absorbed by the yards would spill over the curb and be drain into storm drain and then to the body of water like creek or stream or river or lake or ocean . Every one roof draining straight over the curb directly is a BAD idea You would overwhelm the storm drain and caused frequent flooding
@toprock9500

@@sofjanmustopoh7232 that makes sense in drought prone areas helping to water the lawn but i see many that discharge right by the house!. Here we can get 300mm (12 in) of rain in a day and the storm drains are massive with multiple grates in case one is blocked. Every house and business is connected to the street gutter. there are large retention ponds especially in newer suburbs that hold the water until the flow decreases. yes we do get flooding but not so much from overwhelmed storm drain. many houses also have rainwater tanks attached to the downpipes to hold the water to use in the garden and slow down the release. different strokes for different folks i guess

If you don't have at least 1/8" for every 1 foot then you really need a pump to stop that from happening. It doesn't look as flat as Chuck seems to think it is but the camera can play tricks on you sometimes.

The neighbour has that setup. The pipe blocks up when we have too much water coming down the street,we have to put bricks in the gutter out the front just up from the gutter hole to slow the water coming down the street so the water can get away from the property.

Until there's an answer to whether or not you can do this to city property, it gets a thumbs down.

There's another video with this same job where he advised you to check your local municipal and HOA by laws before attempting to do this. He can't possibly know what the laws are for each municipality.

In my city you need a permit you need to remove the section concrete of curb and to the street with steel pipe inside the hole. This curb you did will crack over time and look ugly and hole near the divider line even worst. If this video need permit the city inspector will made you start over and you wasted the money in the beginning. Please don't do it .

Not true. Mine was done exactly the same way he did in this video and it hasn't cracked in 25 years. In fact, many of the houses in my neighborhood had the exact same procedure and none of them have cracked. Not one

As long as he is attached to the appropriate wattage breaker he is fine.
