Great vid. Rowed for 3 years at uni. Stopped rowing for the past 3 months and have focused on cycling. Did my frist 12km row again the other day and it was impossible to hold my old splits, despite an increase it fitness. My breathing and heart rate was fine, but id lost so much power. From my experience, i can maintain a higher heart rate and Power output for a much longer period of time on the bike, but the workout on the rower was so much harder yet rewarding, both physically mentally. I also recover so much more quickly from cycling. Id say if you want to get the most fit and gain real strength, rowing is the only way! Rowing fitness definitely translates to the bike, but a fit cyclist will not be a fit rower. Just found your channel and i love your content.

Doing both makes it easier to get more exercise volume. My glutes start to feel crushed after I row for 30-40 minutes, since there is no way to vary the position and get the weight off the rower seat. Switching to different exercise machines lets me go for as long as I want. Using different machines is also less boring - and boredom is the bane of stationary aerobic machine exercise. Using machines is mental torture compared to doing any real sport, such as riding real bicycles on real roads with real people to compete against or to team with for drafting.

Yes, you don't have to waste half the summer merely regaining the aerobic fitness that cyclists in seasonal climate areas tend to lose during winter. If you stay in shape all winter, when the spring thaw arrives you literally hit the ground running - or pedaling. I live in a medium climate where cycling is possible for most of winter, but with enough weather interruptions that it's hard to stay in shape. Plus the short day length in winter eliminates most of the weeknight group rides of summer. Even with the vast improvement in bicycle lights, group riding in darkness is still harder and less safe than riding in daylight. An indoor program for winter is critical for maintaining aerobic exercise volume and intensity regardless of what the weather does.

Rowing for life!!! :D I also love a good spinning class, however I disagree that cycling has no injury risks! To make it physiologically useful exercise you need a certain intensity, and when the resistance on the bike is increased many people find it hurts their knees since they are unable to utilize the quads and hamstrings.

What about utilising their glutes too? I have moderate osteo in my right knee, go hard in spin classes and seem to come off pain free. Also, it might depend on bike ergonomics and how a person positions their body in the attack? For me spin and rowing are the most beneficial ways to do low impact cardio.

Any form of exercise can cause injury to some people. Cycling is merely less injurious overall than high-impact exercises like running. If you join a cycling club, you will see plenty of old cyclists, but you don't see a lot of old runners. Some of those old cyclists will be former runners who had to give it up for cycling.

What I recently discovered is that after doing a few weeks of really intense spin classes (2 - 3 times a week) is that the energy system I use for cycling has increased my stamina with rowing. So I can now reach 1000M in just on 5 minutes @ 90 - 100W. Not bad for an old chooky!

Yes, aerobic fitness is well-known to transfer between the various aerobic exercises to a large degree. That is how triathletes can excel in all three phases despite most of them having a background in only one of the three. If you have bicycled for ten years, you probably won't need ten more years to reach a comparable level in, say, running. Just enough cross-training to develop the technique, and your aerobic fitness will carry over. Many cyclists in cold climates are also speed skaters.

One aspect of rowing not mentioned is breathing; really pumps a lot of oxygen into frontal lobes. Plus much easier to set up a Tabata HIIT (8 rounds of 20 seconds full out 10 second rest)usually do after a steady 2K row. I do stationary bike because I enjoy cycling and want to keep the legs in shape in bad weather.

I trained power lifting / crossfit for 6 years along with cycling (stationary). My doctor said me, that I should defintely stop power, anaerobic exercises (I am strong myopic and there is risk of retinal detachment) and I just bought the magnetic rower for home use. I just want to train also the upper muscles, not only legs (that are pretty well developed because of bicycle training). If I can burn more calories - it is pretty nice, since I still have some fat to burn. Thank you for your vids! They are well done, instructive and quite motivational! And thank you for your English - it is so clear, that I can understand it as well as my native Polish! Greetings and be healthy!

4:14 "..cycling is an easy motion". Try a Wattbike. You'll learn, if you cycle regularly, to "unload" the non-working leg (and so essentially follow the pedal around without making the working leg do extra work), and also to avoid trying to "lengthen the crank" - push at bottom dead centre. If you train regularly your legs start to just flick over at high torque and (say) 90 rpm, and you produce a lot of power without local muscular pain in your quads, which is what most newby riders experience. On the subject of calories, in 1994 I was tested on a run to failure in the lab, so we know I could only do 5L flat out - 1500 kcals an hour if I could sustain 100%. One hour ago on the Wattbike I did 318 kcals in 20 minutes, but that was 10 one minute efforts, and next-to-nothing one minute recoveries. Basically I did over 250 kcals in ten minutes, or - if I could sustain it - my 100% maximum from nearly a quarter of a century ago. Bikes work if you can persist long enough to build some endurance in your legs.

Both are great. But, you can’t compare a stationary rower to my gravel bike that I can take anywhere. It allows me to get away and decompress while getting my exercise. Oh, btw if you follow a training program on TrainerRoad you will quickly find out how amazing cycling really is.

I think both machines are great. The rower of course gives the best upper body workout, but the bike is of course the best for training muscles i need for bikepacking and stuff. I really hate having to push myself up some of the hills around here, which often keeps me not riding my bike at all. Using an exercise bike, i am no longer dictated by terrain, and can keep exercising at an intensity and duration that works for me. Keeping this up throughout the coming winter should make those hills much easier next season.

The biggest pro to cycling is that it is training for actual outdoor riding which is far more fun and engaging than any indoor exercise. Sure some people actually have a boat and a place to row outside, but very few. Lots of people have bikes...and with a trainer you can use the same bike indoors and out. In the end, it's not the type of exercise that determines your success, but whether or not you stick with it. And you're much more likely to stick with something that you enjoy. But yeah, it does take more time to get a good workout in on a bike and usually a concerted mental effort to keep my heartrate up. In any case, I do enjoy these videos, I have found them very informative as we consider a rower to replace our treadmill, which my aging knees and feet don't really allow me to use anymore.

I'm running right now. Started off at 264 pounds, lost 30 pounds in 2 months, (diet in addition to the running). Even though I'm losing weight, I'm not sure how well I'm doing on maintaining/building muscle in the process, so I'm focusing on fat loss, not just losing a bunch of water weight and a bit of muscle, I want to become in better shape. I'm hoping rowing will help with this. My main issue is that it focuses on the back, and I'm worrying I'll develop my back muscles, but not my chest muscles, as well- I want to develop everything in balance. Is there anything else I can do that will achieve for my chest, legs, what row achieves for the back?
@trainingtall

Another challenge for cycling is that improper setup of the bike can actually cause physical problems. For example seat too high or too far forward or back. I'm a cyclist so I'm more in tune with what can go wrong with bike fit. I feel that cycling might require more practice and conditioning before "going hard". If I don't give myself a couple months of easy-moderate effort before starting to hammer, my knees will suffer.

Excellent points in pros/cons of each machine workouts. I typically just did stationary bike(2 yrs) but got bored. I felt immediately after rowing EVERY muscle in my entire body as biking is legs only yet great cardio burn. I'm 60, 6'2 @ 170 lbs &recoverying from bilateral pneumonia w/lungs @56% now. Anyway thank you great job!! I will alternate between the 2 for variety but rowing certainly tones/tightens & had me feeling every muscle working PLUS cardio 👍thank you again! I'm adding weights to strengthen muscle loss. Pulmonologist says MRSA pneumonia is the worse & I nearly died. In ICU for 2 weeks & grateful for a new year, new me 🥰🙏🙏❤.

Hi Austin Enjoy your videos, they’ve really helped me. I was a competitive swimmer and realized early on that competitive success depended as much on natural talent and who shows up rather as who works the hardest. It’s become obvious to me I don’t have a lot of natural rowing talent but I really enjoy the feel of the workout. I still swim a lot and see people swimming who are pretty slow but clearly working hard, looks like a lot harder than me, and they have to go longer to do the same distance as me, are they getting a better workout? You mention in this video a “con” of the rowing machine is the need for good form. In terms of exercise is this actually a con or just a measure of efficiency? My question is do you think a guy with bad form can get a good workout and burn as many or maybe even more calories as someone with good form, who can log a lot of distance, in the same amount of time? Or takes twice as much time to row the same distance as you?

I often did 1 hour cycling cardio sessions. Another con is, the bent over upper body position and the head tilting upwards for long period of time is very unnatural. The neck becomes somewhat stiff and awkward. Rowing better full body workout I think, toning the muscles and get better posture overall.
