Are you looking to find the best koi pond filter for your setup?
In this video I discuss why you need a koi specific filter on any pond containing koi. I discuss the principles of filtration and explain the difference between mechanical and biological filtration. I briefly go through the Nitrogen cycle and explain how it influences the filtration you choose for your pond.
I then go through what in my opinion are the best filters for koi ponds by counting down my top 10.
Choosing just 10 was difficult so I need to give an honorable mention to several others that are all capable filters but obviously some had to miss out.
ERIC
Trickle towers
Simple moving bed filters
Roto showers
Its also possible to make a few of the top 10 yourself rather than buy off the shelf.

Dazzle Koi didn’t realise how big they are to be honest and would have too much overhanging the pond.ive already got a black pvc 3tier one with various media but not using at the min as I’m not sure it would suit the pond(sounds weird I know).you think bhm in that would produce similar results?
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 3 жыл бұрын
@@badenwright9822 its hard to say to be honest. You need good separation between the trays as the water needs to accelerate and the water molecules smash against the media in the next tray. If you have that and as much flow as possible over it I'm confident you would see an improvement. I honestly don't know if it would work as well as it can do though.

Hi and thank you. It all comes down to budget really. A nexus 300 series would serve you well, as would a sieve and bead. Budget permitting, a drum and moving bed/shower would be the optimum choice but they dont come cheap.

Interesting to hear your views on filters. I'm one of those that build my own as like a lot of people I'm on a tight budget. One type of filter you didnt mention was a Bakki River which are also very popular. Another alternative to the BHM is pumice. It's probably not quite as effective so you need more of it but it is a lot lot cheaper.

Thanks for your reply Jim, Yes I thought long and hard about whether or not to include homemade as they are very popular. In the end I thought maybe they where covered in each category as you are making your own version of the particular filter so I didn't include them but gave them a mention in the description instead. I'll check out the bakki river, sounds interesting 👍

Hi Julie, thanks for the feedback, much appreciated 👍 That sounds like a dream filter system you have there. I totally agree about never having too much. I don't know if you've seen my video on growing big healthy koi or not but I talk in there about my obsession with getting waste out of the system as regularly as possible as waste sat in the filter is still sat in the pond with the koi. Had a Eazy pod on my 850g grow on, done the job, just felt I could never feed enough at 24c. Changed to a Bakki, admittedly with Bacteria Home media and not genuine BHM but the difference is off the scale, they'll eat as much as I can throw in and the water quality is in a different league. Hard to explain but as well as spot on parameters the water seems to shine somehow.

Great video. Agree 100%. Wish I could get my hands on a Momotoro shower but it looks like they are not available in South Africa. However the company that build our showers does a very good job and the stainless steel work is an piece of art. Currently our one filter is a drum with a shower. The second one is also a drum and we plan to add a shower to it next month. Each filter system is driven by a 40 000l/h pump. Unfortunately the media in the two showers would not be ideal. The bottom two trays would be filled with lava rock and the top two trays with bio balls. At this stage the running shower's bottom tray is filled with lava rock and the other 3 trays with bio balls. Hopefully I would one day have the money to start filling some of the trays with BHM. Thanks for your videos. You do not have an idea of the differance you made in me and my wife's hobby.

Hello mate and thank you as always for your kind words. Posts like yours are why I make the videos. Morning, just watched this one and it’s very interesting your opinion on getting an original Bakki shower as it’s difficult to replicate the effect. I watch a lot of DIY koi stuff as that’s what suits my budget. My pond is sitting about £1500 all in including the fish (all tosai). I’d love to see a video of the possible reasons why an original Bakki shower is hard to replicate. I’ve built my pond single handed and love a challenge. So really interested in your thoughts!

Hi Daz I put 80 kg in 4 towers with lid and weir before I started with koi . My fancies loved it the koi do also at one end of pond is a water blade with a large canister being fed prior to water blade they will swim under the return to the water however they can’t get enough of the return on the bakki I used a evolution aqua pump 10000 and it works really well I also planted the shower with marginal pond plants they grew like wildfire I’ve not seen anything like it before I had some Lily’s in pond which always done well This year with the Bakki and the plants in bakki the Lily’s have been starved of nutrients I must imagine they look pretty sad with themselves As the koi get bigger they will be no plants in the new pond But I definitely will be carrying on planting the Bakki There’s reeds on the bottom tray which sprouted !!! Water grasses that went mental I’ve been giving it away to pond owners When I originally watched this vid I was expecting drum or nexus to be your number 1 and I watched your other vid on bakkis and you were the first serious koi keeper to use a bakki as your entire filtration you obviously have great faith in them and I can see why mate I’m gonna use an Oase drum on the new set up with my Bakki I think it be a good combo Great vid as per usual mate 👍👍👏👏

Hi Simon and thanks. Apologies its took me so long to reply, I've had a few issues of late. I think the combo you mention is just about perfect. Great video yet again. Don’t agree with the bakki shower number 1 for an all round filtration system. Bakki showers hate dirty water they don’t catch the muck and it ends up either gathering in shower or running straight through. Bio side i 100% agree providing you’ve got the right media. Filtration for me is a no no , nexus for filtration bakki for added bio.
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 2 жыл бұрын
Hi mate. For me its something of a myth that bakki showers need clean water. They where designed to 'consume' a level of organic waste via the far infra red media. They have got a reputation over the years for needing clean water and I believe that's all because people make poor copies of them with the wrong media. Media such as grog etc will not handle solid waste. FIR ceramic media will. I ran a 5500 gallon pond on 2 bottom drains, and two skimmers, feeding 3 genuine showers via 3 x 15000 litre pumps and no other filtration and it was crystal clear and trouble free for about 6 years. Its still the most successful pond I've built. Thats why showers are above drums for me as drums are completely limited to just mechanical filtration.

I’m edging towards a bottom drain on a gravity fed system, I know you run yours on a 3 “ pipe to increase the flow to keep it free of muck, would you recommend the same for a pond I have planned? ..also I’m not sure about a skimmer where my garden is relatively free of autumn leaves, would you, wouldn’t you , many thanks.

Hi Dougie, yes a Pod would do a good job on that sized pond. You wouldn't need any additional filtration. Definitely need a bottom drain, the difference is HUGE. Yes 3" bottom drain is the correct one for a Pod to prevent settlement and potential bacterial issues. If you don't have a source of leaves I wouldn't bother with a skimmer, I don't have one on my pond.

Also what pump would you recommend for it? I really need help, my mind is going nuts trying to figure this out. I will be adding a waterfall with filtration but im assuming a waterfall alone wouldnt be strong enough. I truly hope you can help me out. I am located in the US if that helps?

@DazzleKoi 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mate, sorry for the delay replying. If you where located in the UK I would say you should look at a Nexus 320 filter. I don't know what the availability is like over there though. They are not cheap though but here you can regularly pick up second hand ones for a good price. Have a look in to that over there. You would couple this with a 10,000 litre pump. So fit a bottom drain and gravity feed to the nexus. At the outlet of the nexus fit your pump and pump back to the top of your waterfall via a UV clarifier. You will need a 55W UV. If you have potential for leaves falling in the pond you should fit a skimmer and this will need a second, smaller pump. This can also pump back to the top of the waterfall and depending on your space and layout you could also put the UV in this line instead of the main filter line.

Hi Andy, its a tough one this, the filter you mention is not really a koi filter as such. All the literature suggests a garden pond rather than a koi pond and it is a very different thing when you introduce koi as they make a LOT more waste than pond fish, particularly ammonia. It may be ok because you are having the shower to handle the biological waste (as long as you use the right media) but I think you will very quickly outgrow the filter and need to upgrade. I think what propose would be ok, but if you could find maybe a secondhand eazy pod instead it would be better suited to a koi pond. It wouldn't need the shower , just the pod would be fine.

@DazzleKoi 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ian, that's a really tough question as there are many factors involved such as pump fed or gravity fed, pond shape and circulation, food used, frequency of cleaning etc etc etc , but if you pushed me for a general figure I would say 1500 gallons would be the limit. In terms of the number of koi, the Eazy Pod can process 100g of mid quality koi food per day on its own so probably 5 or 6 fish if you want them to grow strongly and probably 10 if you just want to feed them to survive.

Need help in selecting pump! Just purchased the EazyPod Auto UV filter and I see it recommends a slower 1,320 GPH pump. I currently have a 1,222 US Gallon koi pond with a 3,600 GPH pump. Is this too fast of a rate for the EazyPod Auto UV? I want to make sure I do the best for my koi and with this new filter. Thank you!
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 11 ай бұрын
Hi mate, sorry, I missed your message 😒 Yes 3600 gph is far too much for an eazy pod. They work optimally at 5500 litres which I believe is 1450 US Gallons per hour. This is the actual flow target after head loss so depending on your systems plumbing, you will probably need something like a 1800 gallon pump. If you can get a variable flow pump and dial it in exactly to 1450 actual flow that would be ideal.

What are your thoughts on a pump fed to RDF/Bio system?
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 3 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, RDF filters do a good job of mechanical filtration but only if you put the waste in to the drum in the first place. So pump fed is less efficient than a bottom drain gravity fed but any waste you do manage to get in to the drum , it will take out well. How well a pump fed system works at getting the waste out of the pond and in to the filter depends on many many different things so its hard to say how well it will work until you try it. If you can go bottom drain and gravity fed it is better and will work better 👍

@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 3 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, fin rot is a secondary condition and can be caused by many different things via stress. Poor water quality is one thing that can cause it. Overcrowding is another, if you have too many fish in your pond. Stress leads to fin rot but again the cause of the stress could be many things. Even low quality food can contribute, as can fear. Generally most cases are linked to stress of some form. New surroundings, handling, parasites, low oxygen, the list goes on. All you can do is go through all these things in turn and eliminate them one by one. I would start by scraping several fish to rule out parasites. Then just work through everything I have listed here and try to work out what is causing them stress.

@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Luke, its hard to fit it in really as its quite a specialised filter. It would have to be for very small ponds or quarantine/hospital tanks so its difficult to compare it to the bigger, all in one filters I've listed. Its more of a finisher, a filter to compliment and bring the best out of other filters and allow them to do their thing better, than an all in one, stand alone filter if that makes sense. All that said, its a LOT better than a black box filter so maybe it does belong on there 👍🍻👍🍻👍

I’m guessing most of this translates to goldfish as well? They produce ammonia too right?
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 10 ай бұрын
Hi there, yes it definitely does. Goldfish do indeed produce ammonia, albeit at much smaller levels. It can build up though if left unchecked. Also rotting organic material can produce some ammonia as it decomposes.

@@DazzleKoi ok thank you. I’ve cleaned my filter twice since I wrote you last, as well as taking out a few gallons of pond water and replacing wirh new using a declorinator. Water is clear as a bell and fish seem happier and liking their morning feeding wirh strong appetite again. . I’m gonna do this twice a week wether I think they need it or not, remembering your analogy of the room with many eating and pooping. I also addend some cut up loofa I grew last year, in the filtering box where the pump is. Bet it will make good filtering media. ( I was referring to a different video you did)

know it doesn't fit in this video, but I want to solve something in my pond. my pond is 13000 liters with 8 koi and for filtration I have a nexus 320 with an air pump 70 and a 95. it is also with an epdm liner and I have installed a retrofit bottom drain. the problem is that I add water from my well where I have done an analysis in chemistry with ph 7.2 and my pond has ph 8.8. how is that possible; note that I clean the filter every 2 days and I also hoover almost every week, so I renew about 1000 liters a week.. if anyone have some ideas whats going on i would appreciate that..

Hi there. pH rises and falls naturally throughout the day. Measure it first thing in the morning and at sun down to get a true picture of the range you have. Many things add to pH and many things 'consume' pH so each system is different. If it is very high consistently then you may have something leaching alkaline in to there such as roof, gutter run off, lawn run off, cement from bricks or tiles or flags around the pond etc etc etc. I would measure morning and night first to understand if you actually have an issue before you try to solve something that may not be there 👍

Hello dazzle im a sheet metal worker have built my own bakki shower to same dims as the momataro except im at 3 tier not 4 filled with alfagrog all 3 tiers before that i have just bought a easypod which will be pump fed 11000lph pump into the easypod then return over the shower i have a spare 6500 pump 1 year old and a pressure filter im thinking of building a bog at the other end of the pond as i like the idea of water plants in my pond would it be a good idea in your opinion just looking for any extra filtration i can do as ino some of these plants suck up the ammonia an nitrates many thanks daz keep vids coming
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi Жыл бұрын
Hi mate, I'll be honest, I'm not fan of plants/bog filters etc. They seem like a collector of dirt and subsequently bacteria to me. I don't see how you can build something that allows the waste material to be flushed out daily as I like to do with my filters. If you can, I would pump feed the easy pod with the 6500 litre pump and then use the bigger pump to feed the shower. If you can though, try to upgrade the media in the shower as grog is not really an effective shower media. It wont remove nitrates or give you the main shower benefits. If you want to add plants, maybe you could have the pod outlet go in to some kind of bog filter and then run back to the pond under gravity.

@@DazzleKoi yea didnt really think about the build up of bacteria maybe i could use the outlet from easypod that can go over a smaller not a bog but over the plants then run off back into the pond cheers daz

Yes mate, that could work. If you can feed mechanically clean water to the plants they may help to clean it up chemically 👍👍

@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard, I built the shower only pond (5500 gallons) back around 2002 /2003 and ran it for around 5 years on showers. then due to change in circumstance (cost, working abroad etc) I sold the showers and went to a more conventional system. Then around 2015 we sold the house to start a new business and left the hobby behind. We are in a house now that we wont be in for too long so I built this little pond during lockdown. This one has the Pod on 👍

Fish look to be getting buffered around, not able to swim comfortably..their tails are in the air..too much turbulence from the bottom drain air supply ,I'd reduce the flow to enjoy the fish better...they'd thank you for it too.

@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 3 жыл бұрын
I see a moving bed as just one element of several different filters. I had to draw the line somewhere and as the nexus works on a moving bed for bio and so do many multi bays it didn't seem sensible to take up a spot just with that. You could say, no static K1, or no filter brushes, or no filter foam etc but as they are parts of a bigger picture rather than a filter per se I decided to go with the 10 I talked about. Maybe another video specifically on biological filtration may be something I could look at though 👍👍
