My favorite version of SMB3 is the NES version because I really like its artstyle and it has the best physics out of the three versions, and this version of the game feels the most replayable to me. It's also the most challenging version of the game which I like. My least favorite version is probably the All Stars version mainly because Mario in that version looks very off without gloves, and that version has a few typos in it. The physics in that version also feel a little sluggish compared to the other versions.
@anotherblowncartridge Жыл бұрын
I don't know if I get any of the sluggishness, but the absence of gloves is certainly an issue.

@SuperJM9 Жыл бұрын
My recommendations are as follows: Famicom: One of only two ways to play with original difficulty (getting hit with a secondary powerup reduces you to small Mario) and 8-bit graphics and sound. NES: 8-bit graphics and sound in English SNES: World (but not level) select, updated graphics without screen crunch Super Mario Advance 4 (GBA): Original hardware, world and level select, e-reader card effects (harder than Famicom difficulty in some ways but easier in others, SMB2 vegetables in levels, different Luigi physics, P bar halved, slower timer, 1-ups replaced with 3-ups, coins from defeated enemies like SMW). E-reader powerups like 100-up, boomerang and cape. Cons are screen crunch, worse audio quality and level cards required for e-reader levels , card effects and powerups (unless you use an emulator to scan them). Super Mario Advance 4 (Wii U/Switch): All e-reader levels unlocked but no e-reader card effects or powerups.

Gba version also does several cool touch ups like the dust effects from changing directions also applies to sliding down slopes too. So many updates and thing happening from last 2 games. The blocks where shiny, Mario was able to grab a shell and run around with the shell, and there was the magic leaf, not only can you walk right or left. But also up she you fly 🤯. You can enter to inverted pipes, also there where hybrid levels with land and water in the same level. And this is the Mario game with the most power ups, even Mario world doesn’t have this many power ups. This game was a master piece and was the best game in the nes library.

Back when this came out for GBA, I actually did get an e-reader and the packs of cards for it (and I still have it all). Though back then I didn't know that there were some cards exclusive to Walmart, including 2 of the level cards, and I never did get them. I only had the standard version of the game and the cards that were available at all retailers. The whole thing was pretty absurd since it required using 2 GBAs in some form or another (one with game and the other with the e-reader) to even use the cards. But since I had a GBA SP as well as the Gameboy Player for the Gamecube, I was able to get it all to work. Also, even with the Walmart cards, a lot of the extra levels couldn't be access since unlocking them required using cards that were only released in Japan. Of course all of the Levels were unlocked in the Wii U release of SMA4:SMB3, as well as the version on the Switch service, which is nice. Though I do wish they had some kind of option to simulate the use of the other cards. There were item cards that would add power ups to the inventory on the map, so you could pretty much just stock up on any power up as much as you want. One of which added the cape feather from Super Mario World. There is no other way to get this power up in this version of the regular SMB3 game. There was also a card that added the vegetables from Super Mario 2 (USA) to the regular SMB3 levels. To my knowledge, there is no way on the Wii U or Switch releases to use those features. Some of the extra e-world levels do have those features (cape and vegetables), but there is no way to use them in the main game.

The GBA version is the one I recommend because of the extra content (assuming you have some way to unlock them), as well as the quick save feature which allows you to quit and return to the same point at any time. That said, the NES version is still pretty friendly with unlimited continues, lack of a save feature aside. Mario 3 was never a brutally punishing game to begin with, and the remakes don't really change much about that, so a begginer can still play the original version without worrying that the game is gonna set them back too much. Any version of this game is a fine way to play it.

The thing I don’t like about All Stars is that it loses what the developers have said was their intention with the original which is that it’s a stage play. A lot of times certain objects have a shadow backdrop which is implying that the background is actually on a stage and therefore the background is just a flat prop; All Stars loses this aesthetic. Also, I really do like the 8 bit music better. It’s just a shame about the limited sound channels of the NES meaning P-Speed often cuts parts of the music out. But anyway, the original NES version played in a modern way so as to allow you to save your progress is my definitive version.

The NES sounds way better than the SNES for these games. These games suffer from the SNES sound chip, which does not mesh well with the style of music Mario games have. It's honestly really unfortunate that the SNES has some of the best game music and some of the absolute worst, along with everything in between. When people understood the sound capabilities, you could come up with amazing work, but that was not many composers. The NES has far more quality game OSTs compared to the SNES.
@VegaPhil8 ай бұрын
It’s not that people prefer them because they’re better versions just that they have more of a connection with that version if it was the first one they played. But also some of the things you’ve mentioned are just opinion not fact. Just because you think they look and sound better does not make it definitively true. In fact the only thing you listed that could be solidly argued to be an objective improvement is the addition of save features but even then some would argue that they prefer the challenge of having to complete the originals in one go. So it is not as cut and dry as you think.

Presentation wise, I prefer the original NES version. The more minimalist approach to the visuals add to the stage play vibe. But the other versions have a save feature, and that’s hard to argue with

i've only emulated all three versions but never played them on the actual hardware (i'm 19 and i'm into emulation) and my rankings would be: 1. SNES 2. NES 3. GBA What I like/dislike the most about each version: SNES - the visuals are great, but I don't dislike anything about this version - anything that I can think of, this version either does it the best, or worse than just one of the other two - but never worse than *both* NES and GBA NES - the soundtrack sounds great - it's got that retro 8-bit feel to it - the visuals though, are too basic 🙃 GBA - the color palette is great (though with emulation I can get it on the SNES), but I hate that UI - it should've just been _underground_ like the other two versions 🤷♂️

In my opinion the Super Mario All*Stars version is the superior version, followed by the NES original. The GBA version tries to be the Super NES version but fails technically in just about every way possible. Not only are the graphics and sound inferior due to hardware limitations, IMO they have made it even worse by adding annoying voice clips every time you jump. Literally the *only* thing this version has going for it are the e-Reader levels. For those go ahead and fire up the GBA version of the game, but for the main game you're probably better off just sticking to the NES or Super NES version of the game.

Yeah, the original versions, anyway. In the west, Super Mario Bros. 2 is a very different game. Even then, Super Mario Bros. 2 (or The Lost Levels) is, while similar, more than just a difficulty spike.

Well my bi polar epileptic sister 20 years and myself 31 years old high functioning autistic man, we both prefer the Super Mario All Stars SNES cause you can save on it other than the originals nes mario bros! But still original Mario Bros 12&3 nes still good but no save!

If I were to rank then all it would go 1) GBA 2) NES 3) All Stars The NES version has the better player physics and (imo) better presentation. Both 16bit versions made some changes I don't like, for example they standardized the unique red and orange fire flower design that was in the original, and standardized a lot of stuff in general. I get it was to have a more consistent brand but what I like about classic Mario games is how unique they all feel from each other and these little changes kinda take that aspect away in some regard. GBA and SNES have the same exact physics (unless you play as Luigi in World E, where he has his own physics) and look almost the same with the only real differences being Luigis unique jump animation, a better Peach sprite, and the addition of gloves on the brothers. All of that considered plus the fact that advance 4 has all that extra content (and theres even more if you use the E Reader cards on the original Japanese release) I feel like objectively its the best option in terms of content, but I do admittedly usually play the nes version more just because it looks and plays better to me.

I hadn't noticed a difference in physics between the games, but now that you mention it, I'm sure it's there. Even just reviewing the gameplay footage I recorded, I can kinda see it. And yeah, that fire flower design is a fair point too.

@@anotherblowncartridge The difference in physics between SMB3 NES and SNES is a myth actually. You can do a google search, but the code's already been decompiled and compared countless times, and Mario 2 and Mario 3 function exactly the same as before. Same with SMB 1 and Lost Levels, except the Nintendo devs missed a minus sign when breaking bricks, which is why Mario goes up through them instead of bouncing off of them like on NES. Aside from that, everything else is the same. It's also why there's an easy to acquire patch for that brick problem on SMB1 All Stars, cause it was such an easy fix.

@@tamerkoh I am aware that they're source ports, but I swear theres something off with Mario's controls in SMB3 SNES. Either Im thinking of the GBA Version, there's something weird going on with the way the SNES interprets the code (probably not the case since Mario 1 and 2 control the same), or its some sort of weird "mandell effect" situation because I know other people who've said the same thing. Regardless my ranking is still the same because gloveless mario is wrong haha
