Nice video! I am not a DIY guy and I live in an apartment. I got rid of the dining room table and put in a very small gym. Part of that gym is a smith machine with a lat station attached. I am thinking of upgrading the lat station pullies to aluminum. I wasn't sure if the Amazon pullies would be good enough quality, but I guess they are. Thanks for the info!

@@shaned7793 Thanks man!! Switching a dining room table for a gym is dedication! 💪 Yes the Amazon pulleys have been great and still holding up just fine. I wish you the best and am here for you if you have any questions! Thanks for watching! 😁

The 115mm aluminium with massive self made brackets are the best i tried. Mostly the worst part are the low quality bolts and the thin brackets. I would not trust them long term. I´ve gone save and build 10 mm thick inox brackets with high quality bolts (i also weld it myself). This will last longer than me. On top i use quality swivels with bearings.

That sounds like a really nice setup! I really noticed a big difference with the 115mm pulley too. I should use your idea and upgrade my bolt and inbox so it is even smoother. Thank you!

Your pulleys use ball bearings, either plastic or aluminum. The noise of a bearing in a pulley will be manifested by several things: Lubrication: a lack of lubrication favors the bearing of the pulley, it begins to be damaged and it will be noticed by the noise. Load: if you use a few pounds in your exercises, the bearing on the pulley can last longer. if you use a lot of load (pounds) on the bearing in the pulley, that bearing in the pulley will shorten its useful life. Pulley diameter: the greater the outer diameter of the pulley, the larger the bearing, and this is reflected in the fact that this bearing on the pulley supports a greater load. You compared more used plastic pulleys with new aluminum pulleys, this is not a true test. I tell you this because I know about bearings

I totally agree with how the noises are manifested with those variables. While there were used plastic pulleys tested against new aluminum ones I'll say that's not a very fair test however it added a benchmark. With the new larger plastic and aluminum ones head to head was a better comparison. I was mostly comparing those and the differences and also with how much better a size increase performed. I definitely appreciate your knowledge and expertise! Thank you for watching! 💪

my question is whether or not the aluminium pulley would cause premature wear to the coating of the cable.
@SelfBuilt
@SelfBuilt 9 ай бұрын
That's a great question. I didn't consider that when swapping. I've been using them for about 9 months and so far there hasn't been any visible sign of wear to the cable coating. Everything is still going great! 👍

Thanks for the analysis. Where did you get the bracket that you put the pulleys in?

I got the brackets off Amazon. They came with the 90 mm pulleys. I've looked for just the brackets alone and haven't had any luck.

@@SelfBuilt What brand were the 90mm ones? The LFJ one?
@SelfBuilt

@@privtprofile24 they are OTTFF. They don't seem to be available right now on Amazon but I imagine most 90mm will be similar. Here is the link so you can see exactly what their specs are www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B08MX3QRHX?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

@@SelfBuilt I am having trouble believing the things these people claim on amazon. Up to 440lbs? Do you have any tips to find the right items and to have atleast somewhat of an idea what loads it can actually handle?
@SelfBuilt
@SelfBuilt Жыл бұрын
@@privtprofile24 I agree and find it a bit fishy that a plastic and aluminum one has the same weight capacity when the aluminum ones are built better. If it were me I'd go with an aluminum one. They feel like they can handle the more weight and smoother. The 90mm are more economical but if you want really a smooth and longer lasting I'd go for the 115mm. Being bigger it will also help the cable's last longer.

I have about a 1/4 gap on each side with the pulley inserted. What would you fill that gap with..washers??
@SelfBuilt
@SelfBuilt Жыл бұрын
Are you saying the pulley can move side to side 1/4 inch? You can use washers like you mentioned or possibly try to tighten the bolt to see if that closes the gap.

If you can remove it and measure it that will let you know. Measure how tall it is. They seem to be pretty similar as far as width among similar sizes. Are you looking to replace yours?

@@FlannelFetish dang man you SCORED! It looks super nice. I'd guess there are 7 pulleys if you're wanting to replace them all. It's kind of an investment but if you get aluminum ones they are smoother but can be pricey. The plastic ones would still be great too.
