Regardless of whom it is to blame (probably every adult involved there) I think they really failed her. No child should ever be that overworked. I was a collegiate swimmer. During the peak of competition season, we would train up to 25-30 hours a week. It absolutely killed my body as a 18/19/20 year-old college student. I had chronic back & shoulder pain from the intensive training. Hearing that a seven year-old is training for 25 hours a week is absolutely shocking. I understand that a child could have a true passion for dance, but is all of that training, at such a young age, really worth it? Especially when it comes at the expense of their childhood?
@evilinc333 Жыл бұрын
I agree that 7 (and even 9 which is when I hit 20-25 hr weeks) is too young. Unfortunately, intense training like this is fairly typical in the dance world, especially the ballet world. I'm glad for the career I have because of it, but that kind of training definitely left its mark.

My kids danced with a couple of those kids on occasion and was friendly terms with them. They were nice kids. One of the kid’s parents searched her kid’s mouth in front of everyone to check if she ate a strawberry! But she wasn’t the craziest. We knew kids whose parents had them on very restrictive diets- everyone knew it. We saw kids in the studio day in day out even at a young age. Kids would be doing photoshoots in the cold or the extreme heat, and late into the night. Moms would say rude things to other kids before they went on stage to freak them out. Really crazy and extreme behavior was not normalized by Dance Moms; the dance world was already broken. The extreme behavior was not unique to the dance moms show by any means. We have known kids who danced when they didn’t want to, several who ended up hospitalized due to heart and bone issues due to malnourishment. The darkest thing my kids ever observed I won’t write here but the studio in question knows what it is. It starts as an innocent endeavor but at the highest levels gets very dark. Dance Moms just profited off of drama that was already going on.

To be honest I think the only one who wasn’t was Holly…. Everyone else showed signs of being a stage mum but Holly only ever did what Nia wanted and stood up for both Nia and herself and even on occasion the other girls
@waitwhat2915 Жыл бұрын
I would say Kelly wasn’t one either. I mean she openly admitted that she didn’t care if her children won all the time and was fine with pulling solos for the sake of Brooke or Paige’s well-being. Also, when Paige was having panic attacks she referred to dance as an extracurricular activity instead of a career. I don’t think she cared about her kids becoming famous I think she just wanted them to be happy.

I think at times, Christi did apply pressure on Chloe, but it seems like that her heart was in the right place. She wanted her daughter to be herself. The only person Chloe had to prove to was herself. Abby was the real micromanager, always in that crazy mindset that Maddie had to live to HER expectations. At least she held herself accountable. Christi is regretful that she played into the spiteful narrative Abby created that Chloe was a subpar second rate dancer. Instead of encouraging Chloe to have more fun. 🤩 A lot of people are under the misconception that Maddie was favored because she was the best dancer. No, she was the favorite because her mother allowed her to be groomed. Abby tried to favor Chloe, but Christi wouldn’t allow it. @evilinc333 Жыл бұрын
This is not me condoning it at all, because I definitely think that there is over-training of young dancers, especially in the ballet world. But I'm a ballet dancer, and growing up, once I hit pre-professional training at 9/10, it was pretty typical for me to be dancing 20-25 hours a week including rehearsal, which for me was around three hours a day, during the week, and 4+ on the weekends depending on what I was doing. And that shorter 2-3 hour training a day is pretty typical for young ballet dancers and it ramps up as we get older, to the point where starting when I was 16, I was doing 5-8 hours a day dancing, and still do now. Now do I recommend this? Not really. I have it to thank for where I am today, but I wouldn't force it on any child who didn't really want it. It's also definitely possible to start more intense pre-professional training at 13-15 and have a great career. There is a huge issue of overtraining young dancers, especially in ballet with extreme forcing of flexibility and turnout, putting young dancers on pointe far too early, and compounding the issues of exhaustion and injury with the promotion of a so-called dancer body type, especially in conservatory settings. I never faced food restrictions personally, but I still ended the day sore and exhausted and facing studying. I don't think the amount of training these girls faced, especially girls like Sophia Lucia who left the ALDC and continued to face intense hours is necessarily entirely on the parents when the issue of intense hours and training is more of a dance culture issue. That being said I do blame them for waking them up early and overstretching them to tears. That's cruel especially when most dancers in ballet at least don't start training till around 8 (usually 9 or 10) at the earliest.
