I just wanted to explain something relating to this video - namely, why I devoted so much time at the start of the video to the opening numbers, when the video topic was non-placing nations. In short, I wanted to feature the opening numbers with all the contestants performing together at the beginning of finals night when anticipation and excitement is at an early high, with every contestant hopeful of being called as one of the semifinalists. I used these clips to exemplify the hope felt by all nations, especially those yet to enjoy success at Miss Universe.

I love the classic Miss Universe opening dance numbers especially the ones hosted in Asia. 1987, 1988 and 1994 were all fantastic. As for the placements, I wish these countries finally place! I think one country besides The Bahamas who also broke that long no-placement streak was Portugal in 2011. And she placed through fan vote and coincidentally, hosted in Brazil.

I also suggest to cover the curious 8-year-pattern of winning countries that has happened at least 3 times (1979-1986, 1994-2001 and 2011-2018) and I really can't believe no one has noticed or commented, at least publically, which goes like this: 1. A country wins for the first time. 2. USA wins. 3. Venezuela wins. 4. A country from the Americas wins. 5. An island country wins. 6. Europe or Africa wins. 7. A country wins for the second time. 8. A powerhouse wins.

Can you make a post/discussion about the evolution of the Opening Numbers and the pageant contestant introductions? For me, the 80s and early 90s, especially 93 & 94 had it the best, with catchy songs and pageant contestant introductions that allowed the girls to greet the audience in their own language, their name, and their country name (often with some sort of nice memorable brief descriptor of their country). It always depends on the performance of the candidate especially the question and answer during individual interviews and on the actual pageant question and answer. Lately, beauty doesn't place you alone. You must combine that beauty with confidence, your platform, and brains. There are lots of beautiful women in Ms. Universe, but usually the ones with confidence combined with their platform and brains mostly wins. Former Ms. Israel and now widely known as Wonder Woman Gal Gadot didn't even placed even though she's very beautiful. If you look at the video she didn't have that "IT" appeal, maybe her confidence is not yet 100%. But look at her now. Every one has their own standard of beauty. Look at Ms. Botswana, she's very beautiful but on a different level. She exudes intelligence and confidence that adds to her beauty. Ms. Japan Rio Mori is one beautiful lady also but a different kind of beauty also. She exudes gentleness, beauty and modesty. But nonetheless intelligent. Different beauty standards. Every candidate has to show the best of themselves in different levels for them to win.

I’ve certainly wondered that… I know part of participating in a pageant is for the contestants to have the experience of meeting people from all around the world, but surely the lack of exposure so many of these countries receive to a global TV audience must be disappointing.

I suggest coincidences with countries in different years. F.E., The 3 top 6 countries which didn't make the cut to advance to top 3 in 1995, were the top 3 nations in 1998 (Venezuela, Trinidad & Tobago, Puerto Rico). Another one would be: The 4 latin-american nations in top 10 in 1988, were the same countries which made top 5 in 2008 (Venezuela, Colombia, Mexico and Dominican Republic). And so on.

Hi TPN. I believe you've missed some information in the history of MU. Please make a review on this matter from one of the youtube channels showing these years and winners that MU has purportedly have actually started in 1926. 1926- USA- Catherine Moylan 1927-USA- Dorothy Britton 1928-USA- Ella van Hueson 1929-Austria- LisL Goldarbeiter 1930-Austria- USA- Dorothy Dell Goff (held in USA) 1930-Brazil- Yolanda Pereira( held in Brazil) 1931-Belgium- Nella Duchateau 1932-Turkey- Keriman Halis Ece 1933 and 1934 no contest 1935-Egypt- Charlotte Wassef 1936 to 1951 no contest Then in 1952 it resumed and won by Finland- Armi Kuusela And most people recollection have started from this year until now. So how do you comment on this and possibly make a video to clarify on this matter that most people mislead or maybe make some amendments if there are that is needed to be more accurate. Thank you and looking forward to hear from you soonest possible. 1926-

Hi Arturo, this earlier pageant shared the same name, alternatively known as the International Pageant of Pulchritude, but they have no relationship to each other. Miss Universe that began in 1952 was started by Pacific Knitting Mills, the owner of Catalina Swimwear. While the pageants share the same name their histories are not connected. But yes it might be worth addressing in a future video - thank you!

TPN, I love this kind of videos. Needless to say, it's very nerdy. I'm thinking though, is there a leaf in your book about patterns? I know you've touched a bit about it in your past videos but some fans are now co-relating similar patterns for winners and fate of candidates. Like those lucky charm candidates for Big 4 winners from same country.

For countries that have never placed at all, why do you think this happens? If decades after decades many of them do not place, why do you think they keep joining pageants? What’s the advantage of continuously joining a pageant where you keep losing and not even get in the Top 20 at all? Is it fair to call it quits after so many years/decades of unplacement?

You know what… I’d have to agree with you! Everything about that opening number just created a sense of excitement - the energetic song, the huge arena, the choreography, the Mexican performers on stage. It was magical! Very much up there is 1986 - that might be my equal first. That was such an exciting start to MU - even the way the special guests were introduced on stage, the final dance moves and end pose. Gives me goosebumps every time I watch it!

That was indeed one of the best original songs and opening number. Too bad the audience was so rude when Mexico failed to make the cut. They should’ve retain the top 12 format with a spot given to the host country but that would be impossible because they reveal the preliminary scores.

You should do a video on territories that’s are now part of another country. Like France, USA, GB, Netherlands. Because if you count them, then most of them would be crossed off too. France has a lot of oversea queens who represent them and in 1997 MU was from Hawaii.
