I have a Raspberry Pi 4 (8 GB) running about 11 LXD containers, one of which is the software Omada Controller. I have had 0 issues. The Pi is running this as a champ, utilizing between 10% and 14% of the total CPU and about 2.4GB RAM for all containers combined as well as the host system. So if you want to dedicate an entire Pi for this, it will not be a problem. I think even a Pi 3 would handle this perfectly, however maybe not along side multiple containers.

That is magic. Already I saved 100 EURs because I have some Raspi's in house.

Thanks for this video. Very timely!! last week, I installed the Omada control software on a local PC, adopted my router and access point it is working great for me. I am considering installing it on a Ras Pi as my permanent solution. My next step will be to add an Omada managed switch to the mix. So far so good. Thanks for the great content.

Well if you do get around to setting up a Raspberry don't forget to export you configuration from your PC. Are you going to have a PoE Pi?

I run an hardware controller as it is a simple option for a home network and I had issue compiling the Omada software on my PC. In the future I might try to compile again on my server.

Very basic question: if I install the software controller on a PC, does that PC then have to be on and running constantly for the network to work? If so I think it will make more sense for me to go with dedicated hardware.
@SPXLabs8 ай бұрын
All of the hardware can work independently ("standalone") of the Controller Software. Yes the hardware will continue to work. Certain features like meshing may stop working. IMO, unless you have a dedicated home server then you should just buy a hardware controller or use the cloud controller. You can also buy a ER7212PC that comes with an intergrated software controller.

Can you run their controller on a raspberry pi? How's the performance?

Hi! Great video. I recently installed theOC200 controller, ER605 router, TL-SG1005P (basic 4 port POE Switch), Two EAP 225 outdoor to bridge to my outdoor building and another EAP225 for indoor wifi access. I was under the impression that the OC200 would allow me 24hr access via cloud, but it appears that I need to have some sort of computer (or virtual device??) connected to it at all times to get visibility/alerts of my system remotely. Is that true?
@SPXLabs2 жыл бұрын
During the first time setup you are asked if you want to connect/create cloud access, you can set it up then. Now you will need to setup cloud access in the admin page.

I'm playing around with software I have running on an old computer I got from work. Don't know how long I'll use it just for two APs though. This old machine has dual xeons and 48GB DDR3 ecc and I probably should look into how much power it's consuming leaving it on 24/7.
@SPXLabs2 жыл бұрын
Are they dual X5690s? Because if so..... You are burning through coal like nobodies business.
@techmaster1702 жыл бұрын
@@SPXLabs I'm not entirely for sure on the model. Will, have to check after work. I know they are old xeons and don't support hyper threading. But, each xeon is 12 cores.

@@SPXLabs Its an older machine. Was being retired from work. I got it for free so I can't complain. Haha. It has two e5-2630s in it. Using for the omada controller and network storage just setup in windows 10 pro. Handles that no problem. Lol But, I imagine these cpus sell super cheap. I like free stuff from work. I'm using an 8 port poe+ HP aruba switch for the eap660hd AP. Also, got free from work. Switch was free not the AP. I bought the AP.

Hey man! Free is great! Those CPUs aren’t terrible. I’d be a proud owner of them. Also you are technically doing the planet a service by reusing them. So it’s kind of a win win

Does OC200 limit the internet speed of a gigabit switch since it only has 10mbps/100mbps ports?
@SPXLabs Жыл бұрын
No. The internet goes through the WAN port of the router.

I am going down the OC200 hardware road. Do u have to use their (TP) router? I am planning to use a router I already have (the TP archer1200), then just add the OC200 controller, TP Switch and some access points? To get a meshed network. Thanks
@SPXLabs Жыл бұрын
You do not have to use their Omada router but the archer is not omada compatible so some features will not work. But the access points should work fine without the router.
@casparharte Жыл бұрын
@@SPXLabs Thanks. So would that means I would only be using the the SDN features on the Access points. That all I needed RN

Great video. Thanks a lot. I am building a mini setup in my private home replaced an ISP provided router/switch/wifiAP box. So a really basic setup. Am currently equipped with an ER605, 3x EAP653 APs. And then I order an OC200 and a TL-SG2008P switch. I have not yet unpacked the OC200 and the switch. I have installed the Software Controller on my laptop and I am up and running. Dont really see a need for the OC200. The wifi and wired connection is running even if the laptop is turned off. So not sure why people are worried about having a dedicated server running the software 24/7. I am not overly concerned with having a 100% airtight system and would rather reduce amounts of hardware components. So am considering to work without the switch and run the software controller on my laptop. Anything I am missing here???
@SPXLabs Жыл бұрын
I don't believe so. It's good that you have options! Imagine if you couldn't run it on non-omada hardware....

@@SPXLabs yeah not sure what I would be gaining by having an OC200. Will start without and see how it runs.

That is definitely a great move. And you do need it to run 24/7 you could always use a container or your existing stuff.

I was recently gifted 2x ER605, EAP235 wall, and no controller. I was also gifted some netgear equipment. I'm not too into the product to buy a controller, I don't want cloud other than my own, so software on docker would be my choice.

The container version of the Software Controller is definitely top tier. Can't go wrong there.

Do you know if the ER605 can provide failover and load balancing of 2 ISP connections without a controller? I have a MacOS household (no spare Windows machines). I'm just looking for a way to combine my 2 internet provider accounts (Spectrum and Frontier) because I work from home. I also need to use 3 Eero 6 wifi mesh devices scattered throughout my home. Any idea whether the Eeros will play nice with the ER605? BTW Great video!
@SPXLabs Жыл бұрын
I’m super confident that it requières the software controller for that, but not 100%. It should play nice yes. It just depends on what you are trying to do. It’s normal network equipment
@aadavidb Жыл бұрын
@@SPXLabs My main goal is to have failover when Frontier fiber goes down, which it does here when there's a power failure. Spectrum cable internet usually remains up when the power goes off. My home has a backup generator and I work from home. Spectrum had a deal for $19.99 per month for 300 Mb service. So I installed the second internet provider as a backup alternative. My second goal is less important but nice to have. That's the ability to combine both services with load balancing. But I don't really need this option. So my distilled question is, Can the ER605 provide failover when one ISP goes dark, without a controller? Otherwise it seems I would need to by the TP-Link hardware controller for an extra $100 or so.
@SPXLabs Жыл бұрын
So it does failover via USB for sure but not 100% about the second wan port. You can download and run the software controller on a PC or as a container. You don’t have to buy the hardware controller.

@@SPXLabs I think I'm going to give it a try and buy the ER605. The V2 version 2 is curiously missing from Amazon, but available at B&H. V2 has a USB port for a LTE modem and runs on 12VDC as opposed to the V1 which is powered by 9VDC. I'm just guessing the V2 is better because it is newer. Thanks for your help.
