I actually wish they spent more time with cars. They missed the subtext of a rich elite learning that the working class are not disgusting or disgraceful. The Rusteeze scene shows that mcqueen is disgusted by those who prop him up and look up to him. His friendship with mater, who is a rustbucket like the cars he was disgusted by, is very significant. Also, the construction of the highway that bypasses the town can be seen as a representation of modernity, and they sure have contempt for the interstate.
