You can solve the longevity issue by repackaging in Mylar with oxygen absorbers. I opened up a bag that was kept in Mylar with oxygen absorbers and then inside a bucket from 7 years ago...it is still good. It was the Wal-Mart brand. I put up recently some nido the same packaging as the Wal-Mart brand. A note that whole powdered milk like nido will not keep as long as the fat free.

Great video Lee! You're right, everything is speculative in that we all have different taste buds. LDS is out of everything right now online, even things they say they have. I agree completely about the eggs, milk, and dairy products. Peanut butter powder is another great one people should have.

We have some augason farms #10 cans of peanut butter. We haven't opened one but we have used the jar of peanut powder from Walmart. To make it spreadable and palatable you have to add oil, sweetener and salt. It can be sprinkled into oatmeal or recipes but you have to add more sweetener to it to get it right. We want a couple jars to put up but the price has gone thru the roof!

@@patches1483 Thank you very much for that review - and unfortunately prices will continue to go up. We can no longer get stuff at yesterday's prices and I don't foresee it returning to those prices, but, we can avoid having to pay tomorrow's prices by buying today - even though it hurts like the dickens

@@ColdWarPrepper you're right of course. Hopefully we can find it on sale with a coupon at a grocery store we have rewards from. Its a want since we have some prepared peanut butter and a couple of #10 cans of the powder. Its protein as well as a seasoning for us. We have dried fruit for oatmeal and canned proteins.

How will you store your powdered milk for long term?
@ColdWarPrepper
@ColdWarPrepper 2 жыл бұрын
@@ourcrazylife2952 With the exception of the Nestle Nido Fortificada and the Great Value from WalMart, they are already packaged for 20 - 30 year shelf life. You can vacuum pack the two exceptions in Mylar, remove the oxygen, and they will last the same.
@patches1483
@patches1483 2 жыл бұрын
Good examples. Thanks for the info. We use nonfat dry milk every day. For long term we got a case of the mylar LDS milk. The mylar allows years of storage so we recommend it also.We used one to see if we liked it and put up the rest. It was good and one 28 oz pouch lasted four weeks. On a regular basis we use Great Value brand. We like the 4 lb bag which lasts us a month. Oatmeal is our morning breakfast and cholesterol medicine. We found Outrageous Oats 1lb bags at $ Tree when everything was a dollar and put up four dozen with the individual packets of great value dry milk. One packet for one pouch of oats. They are both packaged for long term. Out of redundancy we put one of each in a gallon freezer bag and dropped them in a 5 gallon bucket. One pound of oats and one two quart packet is a week of breakfast for us. So hopefully we are covered for a year on that. We did get a couple extra for family/friends if it comes to that. I hope our method helps someone. Yes, our sweetener of choice is in the buckets along with some dried banana and other dried fruit. For baking or recipes we have some Nido dry whole milk. They have small and large cans. Whole milk powder can go rancid but use it regularly to avoid that. It can be used to make mozzarella and ricotta cheese. So can evaporated milk. Look up how to make cheeses. Its not hard and both can be made in hours.

Had to chime in because I'm a milk-a-holic. First, kuddos--excellent vid and great topic. I'm not trying to take issue, but have some things I'd like to share, which are believe it or not part of my epidemiology studies CE . Powdered milk, by itself, is almost like honey...if kept dry (meaning not exposed to temperature flucs, which cause a change in humidity) powdered milk will outlast all of us, regardless of what age you happen to be. With whole milk, it is the hydrated (wet) fat that goes bad which gives it that rancid smell and taste. Food folks will put a Best By date on, well, everything these days. It hardly means anything in most cases except for baby formulae and canned milk. Canned veggies, salted cooked meats (Spam, Bully Beef, etc), dried fruits, honey, will almost last forever. Powdered milk is one of those things that's actually shipped all over the world to relieve hunger and the dates can be pretty wild. You mentioned Army powdered milk. I was just one of those soldiers who happened to like it...and would ask others for their share (yeppers!). There is a 'however'... HOWEVER, if the milk is fortified with (usually) vitamin D or even C, those vitamins will tend to degrade and dissipate. Same true for fortified rice, which is a staple for survivalists. It's not what the Best By date is based on, for that is arbitrary in most cases. The fortification degradation won't bother the milk--the milk's still good--it just won't have the vitamins that were washed in before the drying process. As noted in the video, I'm a fan of those individual packets. They're moisture resistant, AND if one finds themselves needing to leave their home and their stores of foot, individual packets are easier to stuff into a ruck or daypack. A glass of milk is truly a super-food. Actually, I'm gonna go pour one here directly! Keep Prepping!

If you switch the packaging of the shorter shelf life milks, to mylar with an oxygen absorber, or to a vaccum sealed jar, and store them in a dark cool dry place, they will last for 25+ years as well. It's all about the packaging.You can also add nutrients by adding vitamin drops, then re-dehydrating until completely dry, or by adding very very ground up multivitamins to the mix.
