The amazing thing about this new regulation is that there is no standard established beyond what the FCC allows for power outout. Theoretically, you can build a module powered by a coin cell battery that won’t broadcast beyond 5 feet for more than 10 minutes and it would still be compliant. I see a future of cheap, Chinese-built, “compliance modules” coming to market when it’s finally established that remote ID will stick around.

Got a Dronetag BS when they were half off in May. Just got it last week and was able to hook it up to a small lipo battery and attached to my Mavic Pro. Weighs 16grams with battery. Both Drone Scanner and Drone Tag apps picked it up and tracked it. Max range was about 1600 feet using BT Legacy 4 if attached to the back of the Mavic over the LED. Range was shorter at about 900 feet if I attached to the top of the Mavic. A second set of combo antennas did not seem to make much difference. Question: Does the drone have to be labeled on the outside with the RID serial number?

It's a bit complicated to piece it all together. The Remote ID regulation is under part 89, not part 107. I agree about the difficulty of enforcing the RID rule. I think they will catch/fine people when they run into a reportable (damage) issue or if the FAA decides to do some random checking to verify compliance. By giving us this date and then turning around and saying oh well now it's gonna be pushed back while it's great for people who haven't been able to get there modules yet, for the people that have shoveled out the hundreds of dollars to get there drones legal are going to look at these rules as a big joke. By the time they do have to comply they are not going to take any of it seriously. And to be honest why should they they did everything they were supposed to shoveled out a ridiculous amount of money just to find out that the FAA can't even keep there word on a date. Or there gonna wait till prices fall! These rules will never be taken seriously and this will ultimately end up failing.

Thanks for this comprehensive look at the current marketplace! The ideal that each individual drone used under Part 107 needs it's own unique module is somewhat inconsistent with the FAA's explanation that RID's purpose is to associate responsibility of any particular operation to an actual human. Certainly, that can be accomplished with one, properly registered module moved between a particular owner's UV. But then, the FAA figured they would cost between $25-$50 dollars as well. I will be eagerly watching how this rolls out. Of all the regulations that the FAA has adopted with regard to UAS thus far, this implementation of RID seems to be the most "messy", for lack of a better word, so far.

Most RC pilots I know aren't registering, nor are they going to use remote ID. FCC doesn't have the manpower to do anything meaningful about it. My recommendation is people put a small RC car in their pocket, and if some FAA inspector starts questioning the pilot, the pilot should then crash the aircraft, and switch to the car. FAA fines will be so heavy it's worth ditching the drone, but RID doesn't apply to ground RC. Screw the FAA, what a bunch of sick overreach. In my city, politicians would rather make it easier for kids to get drugs than get into RC.

Currently, the FAA website will accept the same RID serial number for multiple drones, which actually makes sense. The Dronetag control App does have some setup for which drone you are using although I don't know if that info is broadcast. There is no real logical reason for a specific remote ID to be tied to a specific drone, so requiring one module per drone is ridiculous and an onerous requirement. I believe it's just an assumption from the extension of the requirement to register each drone for commercial pilots. The need is to tie RID to an operator, which their website does. The serial number of the drone needs to be tied to the drone, in case it is found. I think they now know that their $50 estimate was BS. I currently have two modules at the cost of $350 total, but 3 or 4 that I'll need to use them on. The big drone companies can suck it up, but I can't afford that. I'll end up sunsetting some of my drones and the ones that go first are the ones I use only for hobby purposes. I'm also worried about interference. What is the likelyhood of one of these modules interfering with GPS or the control signal, especially if damaged?
@PilotInstitute Жыл бұрын

Two comments. Holystone announced remote modules will be available on their website mid-September around $50 - $75. As a novice, my question is where is it safe to attach the RID if my beacon light is already attached to the top-rear location of the drone? Does it vary according to the drone manufacturer? Thank you.

Thank you so much for this video! I think I will go to buy BlueMark DB120 because it is cheaper. Are there any website recommended to buy it? It looks like Amazon and Best Buy do not sell it now. Thank you so much again!

Many of these module cases look like they are 3D printed. The fit and finish looks almost homemade. What do you think? Also there are a several far cheaper modules out there that you didn't mention Why? Are they not up to the task? Like the Holy Stone at $89 (which is very popular). Is it not worth it? Thanks for your input. :)

Great snapshot view of the options here. Thanks for doing the work. It looks like I'll only need one for an older Inspire that DJI couldn't turn the RID on for but my other drones are good to go according to DJI & the FAA list.

I revieved an email from aloft that says they have remote id compliance features on their airspace & fleet management platform. Have you heard anything about that? Thanks in advance!

Yes but it doesn't mean what you think it means. It's just a way for Aloft customers to keep track of which drone is compliant and which is not.

how do you know where to place these modules on your drone, so you dont screw up your drone antennas?

It shouldn't interfere. On top of the drone is a good spot, preferably not on top of the GPS chip.

Hey Greg, nit-picking a bit maybe, but at 2:45ish you mention using your BVLOS Waiver for some flights. You might want to review that. It's my understanding that only Standard Remote ID drones are allowed when operating under any Waiver, unless a module is specifically called out in the waiver. Appreciate the video though. Ken Bouvier And i do understand that RID is not required yet. Just for future reference is all.

I had a low battery on my RC but it ensured me that the RemoteID on the Mini 3 was still broadcasting. If they're never going to make a new FPV then I might upgrade to the M30T.

As always, great video! I'll have to wait a little to be compliant. With the price of a module and repair cost for a cracked lens on my mini 2, I'm just going to wait and buy a DJI with standard RID in the near future. Meanwhile, I'll be flying a lot these next couple of weeks and get as much footage as I can before the 16th. My wife won't like it, but I'll tell her to take it up with the FAA. 😆

Why no results for the Spectrum SkyID? At $69.00 coming from a major radio manufacturer this is the only one I'd be interested in buying. Apparently Holy Stone has the HSRID01 Remote ID module for $59.99, and a 70% discount for Holy Stone users coming mid-September. You can forget about $100.00 + Remote ID modules and as the competition heats up, we'll see them for sub $50.00 eventually.

The Spektrum was released only a few days before we did this video. We ordered one but haven't received it yet. We mentioned it in the video though. Holy Stone didn't have theirs available on the website and we reached out to them and they basically told us to pound sand.

FYI: For those that have a DJI Air2s, when you update the device registration in FAA Drone Zone, the Remote Serial ID No. is "1581F + 14-digit Serial No. + 0". If your drone's serial no. has 20 digits, then it's the same no.

Thank you for the great info. I'm surprised these things aren't built with aerodynamics in mind in the least bit. I chose my mavic pro years ago because of it's speed. I fly in Maui Hawaii often, have had the wind go from nearly nothing to over 25 MPH in a matter of minutes and have always had success navigating it back with it's ~40MPH capability. It seams like these are housed in hobby craft boxes. I guess this is just another way to make us buy something new which makes all my batteries, spare props and accessories just a useless as my drone. Not to get cranky with you. Thanks again.
